Yeah, I just don't see him as a head coach either.

Agreed. I might get flamed for this but i don't think he's as good a DC as he's made out to be. Don't get me wrong, he's a good coach, but LSU's D is absolutely loaded. I could have success coaching that squad (not really, but you get the point). I can always remember 3rd and Chavis.

He's like Fulmer, in that they are both passable coaches when they are blessed with superior talent to work with.

If only the same could be said of Dooley, we'd have some hope.

I saw enough during the UGA and UF games to tell me we might be heading in the right direction. Far more tangible evidence than I see for Gruden successfully coaching in the SEC.

See, I was a Dooley supporter until the UF game. It was there I realized he'd never get it done.

We imploded and collapsed against Florida in a game we should have won, and then Georgia gift-wrapped us a comeback. Neither of those games showed me any improvement. They showed me exactly why Dooley needs to be let go.

"Gruden or no, Dooley has to go."

I've already stated Dooley needs to go 8-4. It really doesn't matter how he gets there because it would have to include a win over either MSU, Bama, or USCe.
Let me start by saying I counted the MSU game a win after the schedule came out and nothing to date has changed my mind. However, should the Vols lose..... Unless something has changed in the mindset, this team could very well mail it in for the rest of the year. If this does occur I am very curious to see if we have a "Briscoe moment" and have players invading the press conference.

LOL If someone beats Bama this year, whether UT or someone else, how do you suppose it will happen? Do you think someone is going to come in and dominate the game? Mistakes are how very good football teams lose. The idea that you want to discredit the effort against UGA or UF because they were in some way a "gimme" is ludicrous.

Couldn't agree more about the Florida game.

Game Day in town? Check
Prime Time game? Check
Sold out Neyland Stadium? Check
Playing a rival (that's banged up and you haven't beaten in 7 years) Check

Result - we ran out of juice :glare:

Let me start by saying, I am a supporter of the Vols. Some may think of me as a sunshine pumper or pro-Dooley because I support Dooley and the Vols. I'm not sure that label is fair. That being said, I will support whoever is our head coach. Currently, I support Dooley and hope he succeeds. Dooley has rebuilt our roster and our scholarship numbers are close to 85. We also have NFL talent on the offensive side of the ball (still lacking on defense). Dooley inherited a horrible situation and should be commended for cleaning things up after the Fulmer-Kiffin transition. We are a much better football team now than we were two years ago.

With that being said, Dooley needs to win one of the next three games (if not more). I have talked privately with Montrell, and we are hearing the same thing re: Gruden. Money is not an issue. Gruden is ready to get back into coaching and wants to coach at the collegiate level. The University of Tennessee is a job that not only intrigues him, but it is a job he would take.

I would hope that peoples' thirst for Gruden would not result in them cheering against Dooley and the Vols. If we can go 8-4 or 9-3 this year, we will land an excellent recruiting class and continue to head in the right direction. On the other hand, if we could get Gruden, there may be potential for much more.

My final take, I hope we do not get Gruden because I hope Dooley succeeds this year and in the future at UT. Only time will tell.

The answer is 2007, yet people want Dooley fired if he goes 8-4?

I assume by saying he needs to win one of the next three that means 7-5 will not work. If he beats MSU and they turn out to be a 7 or 8 win team (or mediocre) is 8-4 that much different than 7-5?

I think we are splitting hairs here.

The question of the day is, does this thread make 9,000 by tomorrow? That would make this thread a respectable 500 posts per day (20.8333 posts per hour 0.3472 posts per minute).

Yeah, no kidding..Let's just get him here..If/when the opportunity presents itsel to make a deal w? Gruden, then we need to do what it takes..Pony up the damn money.

Make out your check to the UT Fund Smokey. Hope you have the full size checks. That's a bunch of zeros.

Bama losing is tangential to the point. I don't care about how Bama loses--I care how WE play.

The truth is we let that Florida offense RUN ALL OVER US. A banged-up sophomore QB with very underwhelming talent at receiver and a decent backfield for UF lit us up. Didn't just beat us--put up gawdy numbers!

We had the momentum after stopping that fake punt, and we came out, went 3-and-out, and Florida scored the next possession, effectively winning the game with that play. The team gave up after that, and you could see it. The lack of true leadership, coach or player, is quite palpable.

You act as if Dooley shouldn't be held responsible for the horror that transpired against Florida, but yet he should be credited with "improvement" when Georgia handed us a comeback. And then we all saw what a REAL defense can do to the Dawgs this past Saturday.

Good coaches do more with less, but Dooley does less with more. Nobody expected Dooley to have a team of "world-beaters" in year 3, but, dang, we just wanted to see some real improvement, especially in games against our hated rivals.

If Dooley couldn't beat Florida this year, then when? Next year in the Swamp with an even more experienced Gator team? How is it that Florida can win with an inexperienced sophomore QB leading their offense, but some can make excuses for Dooley with our veteran junior QB with outstanding WRs leading the way? We finally had the edge in offensive talent, and we looked pitiful, while Florida looked like juggernauts. No wonder that win has given them such momentum.

No, I think you want to beat Bama, UF, UGA,......now and so do the rest of us. The real world doesn't work that way. Gruden cannot sprinkle magic pixie dust and make UT a NC irregardless of the opinions posted to this board. Yes we had a chance to beat UF and let it get by. How good is UF? Ask Les Miles.

I still think it is funny that people think we are going to beat them. I hope we do, but they are tougher at home than people realize I think, and Mullen has a much better record against ranked and SEC teams.

And that would require that Dooley has to outcoach Mullen..When has Dooley ever outcoached another coach for another team other than a coach for a mid-tier or cupcake team?

Just to add for the thoughts of AD, Hamilton was about Hamilton and we are suffering as a result of his arrogance. Doug Dickey was about the Vols and Tennessee! We flourished during his time. Hamilton almost snuffed us out! I have heard the accolades of Hart. I am curious to see what unfolds. So far, I only see patience.

Doug Dickey also contributed to burying our basketball program in the 90s.
