Josh Heupel “We’re going to play Elite Defense”

Heupel’s defenses will never be elite not with his fast pace offense I just hope they are decent to average instead of terrible as they been the last two years.
We were far from terrible last year with the number 2 rush defense in the conference and top 40 in ppg vs 7 ranked opponents… definitely room to improve and I love CJH mentality elite Defense under him will look like very good against the run… very good on 3rd down stop rate… and top 25 in scoring defense which is all realistic.

They weren’t terrible last year. Fact is, the way this offense is built, our numbers are never going to be “elite”. They just have to be good enough and 95% of the time they were last year

I was talking about Coach Banks.
Thanks.
My mind went somewhere else.
I think you've got the wrong Banks.
Correct!
For some reason Coach Banks did not even cross my mind.
I found Coach Banks' season to be pretty good.
I thought he got players to really meet challenges. It was simply not to the level that the offensive players shined, and the secondary just didn't have the same breakthroughs that the front 6 or 7 did. If the secondary buffs up like the LBs and DLine did last season, we could be a lot more effective.

We averaged 46.08 points per game last year. A defense that only allows 21 points per game would be enough.

Don’t feel bad, me too.. I associated Jeremy Banks with the Defense.. and the subtle knock on it ..which probably is not a good thing,, one player shouldn’t make or break it..

Serious question here. Since Heupel's offenses get off the field so quickly is it realistic to think our defenses could be elite? According to our own athletic department our average time of possession in 2022 was 25:14 while our opponents was 34:45: 2022 Football Cumulative Statistics - University of Tennessee Athletics That is a lot of time for the defense to be on the field, and lets be honest, they are facing some of the best offenses in the country. I think until we get depth and can keep fresh legs in we should not expect Fulmer era defensive stats.

What do you base this statement on? Why can this program not play both at the same level? Offensive success should breed defensive success. Most all players love to win and good scoring ability allows that. That is if the defense gets them the ball.

Won’t be elite as long as it is on the field too long due to the offense.
Sorry but if the defense is elite, then they will not be on the field for an unbalanced amount of time. So would start to say "man! the defense sure is putting a lot of pressure in the offensive guys making them take the field so much and so fast with all the three and out they are producing"

Maybe this will settle the debate for awhile that you don't need to play good defense in this "new era" since Heupel has said it. People say defense about every 5 years in CFB since at least the 90's and it always comes back. Football is a team game.

What is the worst ranked defense (nationally) to ever win a Natty? just wondering if anyone knows that.
Auburn in 2010 I think. They were ranked in the 50's. They also had Cam Newton and it was kind of a weird year where no one really had an elite defense. If you go back to 2009 (which is how far cfbstats.com goes back), I think there are 3 national champions who were not Top 10 (2019 LSU, 2014 OSU and 2010 AUB). Most of the rest were either # 1 or # 2. LSU and OSU's defenses improved greatly those years as the season went on and were elite by playoff time. Auburn with Cam Newton is really the major outlier. I'm going off memory, but I've looked into this several times. There might be one more that was outside the Top 10 but it was like No. 14 or something.

EDIT: okay, my OCD has made me look it up.

2022, UGA, No. 5, 14.3 pts per game
2021, UGA, No. 1, 10.2 pts per game
2020, Bama, No. 13, 19.4 pts per game
2019, LSU, No. 31, 21.7 pts per game
2018, Clemson, No. 1, 13.1 pts per game
2017, Bama, No. 1, 11.9 pts per game
2016, Clemson, No. 10, 18.0 pts per game
2015, Bama, No. 2, 15.1 pts per game
2014, OSU, No. 26, 22.0 pts per game
2013, FSU, No. 1, 12.1 pts per game
2012, Bama, No. 1, 10.9 pts per game
2011, Bama, No. 1, 8.2 pts per game
2010, Aub, No. 53, 24.1 pts per game
2009, Bama, No. 2, 11.7 pts per game

Won’t be elite as long as it is on the field too long due to the offense.

So if we had Georgia’s defense from the last few years they wouldn’t be elite because of our offense?

You take our offense and put 28 on the board 1st quarter and a half the defense gets 4 stops. We slow it way down on offense.

Then the pass rush of an elite defense can eat. Other team doesn’t have a choice but to throw it to try and catch up. You can have it both ways in football.

This is nonsense that anti Heupel magpies are preaching since he was hired. The defense is responsible for getting off the field. If they go 3 and out or 6 and out on most possessions it doesn't matter what the offense does.
Exactly right.

The offense determines how long a breather the defense gets. But the defense determines how long they stay on the field.

We can absolutely have an elite defense to run alongside this elite offense. There is absolutely nothing in the structure of the game of football to inhibit that.

And I don't think this was intended by Josh Heupel to be a subtle call-out of Tim Banks. That is not his style. I think it was recognition by our head coach, at the end of spring camp, that really good things are happening on the defensive side of the ball.

In other words: he wasn't calling anyone out. He was calling the shot.

Go Vols!
