I expect this young man (Beasley) to take a GIANT leap and LEAD...MUCH more effectively than Banks EVER could have...

Rewatching last year's games...he got better and better EVERY game.
And he SHOULD have been MVP of The Orange Bowl IMHO

There were plays last season where he beat Banks to the RB on running plays right at Banks.

I have my own issues with Banks but I think averaging mid 20s is more realistic
There were 15 teams that gave up less than 20 last year (2022), 16 the year before (2021), 15 the year before that (2020), 19 the year before that (2019). That's what elite defenses do. We have every right to expect elite defense.

Heupel’s defenses will never be elite not with his fast pace offense I just hope they are decent to average instead of terrible as they been the last two years.
I disagree. One thing that has hampered Tennessee is depth. 4th quarter comes and naturally, everyone is gassed. We haven't been 2 deep at all defensive positions for a long long time. Heupel using bandaids, chewing gum, dental floss to McGuiver a defense. Just think if we had a Banks equivalent against South Carolina. Not going to get in the argument on whether that was the reason we lost, but it was obvious his backup wasn't up to the task.

And, if you think the fast pace gasses our defense, look what it does to THEIR defense. I like the "elite" statement.

How many of those ran 80-100 plays a game on offense and scored in about 2-3 mins every scoring drive?

I don't see them as being mutually exclusive.

If I understand your point, which I agree with, you're saying that a Heupel offense that scores fast and gives the ball back to the opposing offense will invariably give up more points. I don't think that point alone defines the defense as not "elite" and you have to look at in context. Given twice the opportunities to be scored on, even the '85 Bears or '01 Ravens would've looked average when measured by scores given up. They'd still be elite though.

Not necessarily true. If D could get some 3 and outs or just some stops they can get off the field.

We walked into that South Carolina game, in control of our own destiny and had a great shot at still being in the playoff picture. Instead we participated as a practice squad against their offense that put a blowout on us. We were on the other end of elite that game. However Pitt and UF were both too close as well due to our defense. If we play even mid range defense we beat USCjr no matter any other issues. The Bama game came down to not our defense playing well at all but who got the ball last. I trust Heupel to get it fixed as after all he's only been here a couple of years and has beat expectations so far, but our defense has stunk it up more than not so far.
I know. Hear ya man. Super bowl or bust.

Well as I said before.

Were recruiting and playing 2 starting defenses. The first 22 are getting about the same amount of snaps (75 % /together)
3rd defense getting 25%.

Not a lot teams are doing that because they don't play as many snaps as our defense (because of what you're mentioning)

It's not 11 guys getting ran through all game like in 2021....
We need about 33 guys that are SEC starter material just for defense. We had maybe 17 last year?
Less the year before.
I'm thinking were closer to 22 now.

Yeah ... I don't think we will even need to be elite. The defense from 2015 + the offense from 2022 = CFP.

Who will be the toughest qb we'll play against this year? USCjr? Georgia? Bama, Florida, KY all have QBs.

Those mobile QBs killed us last year, I don't think we'll play against better qb this year.

I had just assumed he was committed to the team playing elite defense...Maybe it's a subtle call out for Banks?

Bama is shaky at QB and Florida is an absolute disaster at QB right now

The 2 QBs UT lost to were pocket guys actually

I have a suspension Hype will continue to tweak his offense.
I would not be surprised to see him utilize a more traditional offense with more runs and ball control at times.
Then flip the switch to Hypemode and touch the opponents.

In a subtle way... he just called Banks out.

I Love it, if you are a winner and I think Hueple is, you don't come out expecting to be decent. You come out expecting to be elite. You don't want your players to say hey coach thinks we will be decent or good. No he thinks you can be elite , now go out put the work in over the Summer and prove him right. I have no reason to doubt him, as of now. GBO
