Josh Heupel on tonights “Officiating”

The officiating was no accident. Steve Marlow was also the infamous ref in the 2019 South Carolina game which was so atrociously called that the fury of the crowd jacked up our Vols for a massive comeback win. Pruitt got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct arguing with Marlow. I think Marlow has issues with UT. Whatever UT can do to blacklist this guy and his crew, they should.

Ah the officiating excuse. Happens every single TN loss and every time we play bad.
We clearly did not play well, and I want to give credit as Austin Peay came ready to play.
You apparently didn't see the game but we were also cheated out of at least 2 TDs by the horrible officiating, numerous bad calls. One of the worst I have ever seen.

Did you watch the game? D-linemen we’re being blatantly held, yanked from behind, pulled to the ground; multiple PIs committed by AP no calls, while calling dinky PIs on us; there was the punt incident with Burrell, there was the late hit on Milton, there was the targeting by their O-lineman &
I’m sure I’m leaving several other examples out this crew should be fired

There were a couple bad calls…but what is targeting if a guy launching off his feet to head head of a player isn’t targeting? The rule was created for a reason and that play fit every stipulation. That was disappointing and set a precedent that AP could get away with whatever they wanted
Last night they could.

Officiating was lousy but I could see how that was not ruled targeting. Looked to me like he hit the shoulder pads, not the "head or neck area". My wife tells me I've been wrong before, but I think that was when I thought I was wrong but wasn't.
He launched himself (completely, both feet off the ground) by definition: targeting.

He’s probably not allowed to criticize the refs without a fine.
That’s exactly what he was saying when he said “I’m just trying not to do something I’m not supposed to. “ when asked about the refs.

There needs to be a model in place where officials can be ejected for making such openly one-sided game calling. The officials at the Vols/Govs game this past Saturday should NEVER be allowed to wear the stripes at any game, in any sport, at any level in the future. On at least two passes into the end zone where pass interference clearly occurred, and a ref clearly looking on at the play... there were no PI calls!!! An AP defender was clearly seen holding a Vol player and then throwing him into the ground... and no call!!! Coach Heupel could not comment for fear of SEC retaliation. However, fans should contact the SEC office and bombard them with complaints about the UT/AP game.

As a vol fan living in Florida, looking forward to this weekend with cautious optimism. Regarding the game, a few observations:

1. AP played great, Tennessee did not.
2. Joe Milton did not play well and combined with the drops from the receivers, it added to our frustration and uninspired play.
3. There was never a point in the game where the outcome of the game was seriously in doubt.
4. I would question the use of the expression, the worst officiated game that I have ever seen. The officiating was very bad. It did not affect whether or not we were going to win the game. I do think it affected the score by at least two touchdowns. The replay on the fumble recovery will be very hard to justify. I am curious if there will be an "official" explanation." Generally, avoid the use of words like always, never, worst ever or best ever. I would not have a problem with an expression such as one of the 10 worst officiated games that I have seen. Recency bias tends to elevate current events over past events.
5. I thought our defense played well. AP's lone touchdown occurred when our DB fell down. It seemed to me that there was obvious holding multiple time on the offensive line of AP that was not called. Regarding the PI calls, I would compare this to an umpire's strike zone. Somewhat subject to interpretation. We would "hope" that the interpretation would be consistent both ways. This did not seem to be the case in my opinion.
6. For the AP players, this was probably the dream of a lifetime, most are probably UT fans and dreamed of playing for the vols. The combination of their inspired play, our lack of it., being fortunate with high-risk plays (4th down gambles, etc) inconsistent (yes bad) officiating, all contributed to AP actually achieving the elusive "moral" victory that no one ever admits that they want.
7. We have good running backs.
8. God is great, beer is good, people are crazy.

We are 2-0, with a lot of talent on our team. This is a crucial weekend for us and I will be pulling hard for the Vols from my home in South Florida.
