Josh Heupel on tonights “Officiating”

Not to mention the refs were trying so hard to allow a blatantly obvious incomplete pass play through and EVEN HAD TO REVIEW IF IT WAS INCOMPLETE! It couldn't have been more obvious! I still swear to it this group bet the house on the spread.

We have a lot to clean up X's and O's wise, but the refs most certainly impacted the score in a negative way against the Vols. It absolutely deserves reprimanding.

I will start with the caveat that we played terrible. I am not looking for a debate about we should beat an Austin Peay regardless of any factor, but there was something very wrong last night.

There is the Netflix show on the NBA refs and I recommend watching the interviews with Michael Franzese on YouTube. The mob angle is not about affecting the win or loss, it is about affecting the score.

There were calls/no calls, not one or two, but 10's of instances that were drive saving/killing calls. These were not going to affect the win/loss of the game, but it sure effected the score outcome.

Case in point, with the advantage of replay, can anyone present an argument about the fumble that was reviewed and confirmed as an incompletion?

You had to be at the game to get the feel for how bad it was. There was one official in particular who was involved 10's of plays, including the phantom incomplete pass and non-called pass interference in the end zone.

There is something wrong in college football and no one wants to truly investigate it because it is easier to just say "the better team won". I will point back to the TN/Purdue bowl game in 2021. That year, Alabama led the SEC regular season in pass interference calls with 12. In that one game, Tennessee was called for pass interference six times, five times by one official. Next to the national championship game, the TN/Purdue game was the most bet on game of the bowl season.

Like I said earlier man, AP was playing not to get blown out-not to win the game. They basically took away the over the top routes and let us dink and dunk down the field 10 yards at time. They also took the SunBelt Billy route from last year and went for it on pretty much every 4th down.

Combine that with extremely poor officiating and a Vol performance that was sluggish at best and it all adds up .

I'm not going let my BVS angst take over for the year just yet.

Yup, it was a stinker by the Vols all things considered-but I would certainly prefer a stinker vs AP where we still get the win vs laying an egg next week against Florida who is capable of inflicting much more damage.
AP was playing to win, not to just keep it close.
Yes if we get one game to play poorly this was the one. Let's hope it was the last one this season.

I know that the SEC and NCAAF have changed or tweaked a bunch of rules the past few years, but when did they announce that catching the ball, running it for 4 yards and then having it stripped from the receiver is an incomplete pass??

Officiating was lousy but I could see how that was not ruled targeting. Looked to me like he hit the shoulder pads, not the "head or neck area". My wife tells me I've been wrong before, but I think that was when I thought I was wrong but wasn't.
Targeting includes launching with upward thrust. The APU player clearly did both.

Possibly the most bewildering game ever as it relates to officiating. The Beasley fumble recovery that was reviewed and still got wrong was just stupefying.

I don't even have a compartment to keep a decision like that in. How you can have replay, watch it happen with 2 eyes and still come away with that decision is defies belief! If that is not a catch and secure, then the forward pass should be eliminated from the game of football.

That was the wierdest play ever. That lineman definitely went head hunting by instinct and yes it was a target. But, even before he hit him you could see him thinking about how to NOT target, and he put his arms up to not do and even turned his back. It was crazy watching him defy his training to level someone, yet his instinct to do it carried it out.

No one is crying, but get your head out of the sand. We won the game while playing subpar. Watch the game without throwing something at the screen and you will see how many really bad calls there were. The things that was worse were the at least 5 blatant no calls last night that AP committed. If not, just continue to wring your hands and be angry.
Or you could remove your orange shades 😁

Probably the most lopsided officiating against us I've ever seen. And, Im serious. But, I am really glad it happened. This game was still in play all the way into the 4th Q. Heup was playing 3rd stringers on defense too. The fans were rocking. And we got the W anyway. Fans on TV and Neyland got their money's worth thanks to the massive imbalance and some horrible play by a few players. Normally it's over by the 2nd Q and the place is empty in the middle of the 3rd Q.

Nobody will remember that this game occurred after next Saturday at 10PM. We are 2-0 and exactly where we wanted to be.

No orange shades, watch the replay without the preconceived notions. After you watch the plays that were either no call or overturned somehow [(one blatant personal foul on a punt, one textbook targeting hit(overturned) one obvious fumble recovered by us (overturned) one no call PI against Bru (left side of endzone) another no call PI in the right corner of the endzone. The string of holding calls on the screens behind the line of scrimmage] I think that is all of them I can remember. Our team was disjointed enough, the extra help from the officials did not make things any better. Watch it and tell me that it wasn't the most atrocious group of refs ever. PS, don't be so angry. 🙄 😎😉

There were a couple bad calls…but what is targeting if a guy launching off his feet to head head of a player isn’t targeting? The rule was created for a reason and that play fit every stipulation. That was disappointing and set a precedent that AP could get away with whatever they wanted
That wasn't targeting. He had his back to our guy. If that IS targeting, then the rule is even more stupid.

I was there and it was easily the worst officiated game I’ve ever seen yeah.

I have only ever seen one other game that was on the same trash-level of officiating, and it was the Oklahoma - Oregon game of 2006. They were PAC-10 refs in that game and they were suspended. This was the same level of bad.

The play where they reversed the fumble was one of the worst cars I’ve ever seen, you could clearly see he caught it, made a football action, and tucked the ball

My favorite was the holding called on the guy who caught the pass
