Josh Heupel the new Spurrier?

Agree, every vol fan should be ecstatic with what heupel has done so far. It’s really incredible to think we lost 30 players to the portal 2 years ago. But we still need to see if he can be the guy to take us over the top. All signs point to yes at this point

Stunning turnaround. Everyone here should be proud of the team and staff. Enjoy it.

I’m as impressed with anyone over Huepel’s season. I’m on record now as hoping TN wins the east. I’d be all for a TN-Miss State SEC title game.

But let’s not get carried away with the Spurrier comparisons.

It is, indeed, premature to draw definitive conclusions, but significant signs support such a preliminary comparison, if only in a metaphorical sense.

Have you ever seen Tennessee scheme wide receivers as wide open as Heupel regularly does? When was the last time Tennessee pulled a page out of Spurrier's playbook, vs. Florida no less, by driving 99 yards for a touchdown just before halftime and then turn around and open the second half with a touchdown? Conversely, when was the last time Spurrier had to quickly orchestrate a rebuild of the magnitude that Heupel was forced to do, courtesy of the massive losses that we suffered through the transfer portal after Pruitt's departure? And, when was the last time Tennessee had an offense with this kind of firepower? The short answer to the last question is NEVER.

I was suspect on the raise during the off season. It has been well earned so far!

Now, Earn more, Coach!!

Well said, helluva job by Huepel. I’m very impressed.

But Spurrier won titles, lots of them. He won 24 straight SEC games a one point.

We can appreciate and admire what Huepel has done without comparing him to Spurrier.

I think he is to the SEC now what Spurrier was in the 90’s with his fun and gun. Nobody can figure out how to stop his offense and it carried over from last season to this season which proves that. Dude is a offensive genius and we have beat Florida and LSU actually dominated them without our best WR in Tillman. Just imagine when Nico gets here and even more talent comes in with the recruiting classes. It’s simply amazing what he has done in 1 and half seasons turning things around. I just hope Danny White pays him well so he will stick around he’s def earning his money now and then some. I will admit I was skeptical of the Heup hire and wanted a bigger name like James Franklin boy am I glad I was wrong.
Right now, only bama and UGA can slow down Tennessee’s offense. You pretty much need 2 high safeties vs Tennessee.

As long as Heupel embraces the hate and keeps his foot on the gas in games, he could be.

I love how today we just kept offense running as normal compared to Florida. That was nice. I remember for a couple of seasons where Urban (during Tebow years) did not apologize for hanging 40-50 points in lopsided wins. I hope he turns into that and just doesn't let up.

It was awesome seeing Tennessee running the ball well today

Too bad we'll have to contend with a penalty every time Alabama misses on a 3rd and 12. We'll also get penalized anytime we get a first down. The refs can't let the chosen team get beat.
Nope even playing at Neyland we know the officials will be against us just remember where the SEC referee headquarters is located at yep Birmingham, Al. We won’t get any calls next Saturday. And if we do somehow beat them Bama and Sankey and the crimson mafia will poison our trees or try and kill Smokey or put us on probation like they did Ole Miss. i don’t put anything past those aholes

I’m not sure, yet. But we can definitely say that Tennessee football is fun to watch!

And College football (in general) is fun again!

I like Heuple’s humility a lot better than Spurrier- that’s for sure!

“We’ve found a way to be the best team on the field 5 times,” Heupel said. “That’s what we’ve done.”

Urban Meyer was pretty good too but had Tebow, the perfect QB for his offense.

You're right.

Heupel has the potential to be far bigger than Spurrier was. I mean, Spurrier only had one national title. Heupel's young enough, and is building something big enough, that he might one day be mentioned in the same reverential way as General Robert Neyland.

Spurrier is a way point on that larger path.

Go Vols!

Have you guys forgotten how many warts Josh Dobbs covered up on Butch? I'm all in on Heup, but we have a very special young man at QB. We are well ahead of the clock on the rebuild due to HH.

Edit... On second thought spurrier had some really special talent as well at QB, and HH is definitely a changed player after the transfer.

Some of the difference is that Heupel is a Heisman winner and well known to be a QB whisperer. Butch? got a great cup of coffee for lord Saban.

No doubt dude he’s a mature veteran QB and tough as heck. I will hate seeing him leave but we got Nico coming in and Joe Milton has really improved. Heup is a great QB coach too. We also need to keep Golesh as OC him and Heup work really well together.

golesh fixing to be a hot comodity

No....spurrier was as a douche, pretty funny one though
I see Heupel as more of a poker player. Plays his cards very close to the vest. Doesn’t run his mouth or try and rattle you. But always thinking two or three steps ahead of you, calculating the odds, and figuring out what hand he will have to make to beat you. Always has that grin though when he knows he’s got a good hand.

Funny that you mention that as I just spoke to a Florida fan about 30 min ago who saw my sweatshirt and struck up a conversation. He basically said that Heupel’s offense is unstoppable and the only way that he sees anyone countering it is by matching Tennessee score for score which is exactly what Florida was trying to do. LSU tried to do the same today and they couldn’t. We all know the result. Bring on the rusty hammer bammers.

A few months ago, Heupel and Beamer shared the Spurrier first year coach award. My but how those two paths have diverged since
