That is a hard question to answer because of his offense. We have never had a offense like this we have always been this boring clock eating offense that over the last decade has just looked absolutely dazed and confused. If his offense clicks it could change the mindset of this football program in a heartbeat. Offense brings confidence and like I have said if it clicks you could see us do what we are not expected to do. I have been watching Tennessee play football for 31 years and I can promise you this confidence has never been a problem but having a product on the field to match that confidence has. If you think this fan base is hard to deal with now let his offense click and be able to score on anybody in the country and watch us become unbearable to deal with. Like I said offense brings confidence and we haven't had it in a very long time JMO.
Positive bump.

I haven’t scrolled back in this thread to see if I participated, but I remember my take on the situation vividly. I was on the bottom rung of discouragement trumping any moment dating back throughout my Vol fandom. I had found reason for hope for every hire after Fulmer was fired and now that he was fired (I know retired) as an AD I was plumb out. My only trickle of hope was that we would hire a name to weather us through the NCAA doom and mass player defections. I think this is why I’m a Plowman advocate. She faced the mess head on and hired the best AD possible in short order and then backed him to do his job. Freeze, Napier and Franklin fell through or were never possibilities. Elliott let Dabo talk him out of taking on this leviathan mess, so I was down to hoping for Jeff Chadwick or Lance Leipold. Heupel came out of nowhere and I wasn’t inspired. The only thing I KNEW was that he would get something out of the offense and would get 5 years to sink or swim. We’re witness to the rest.

Leipold would've also been a good hire. But I'm glad we got Heupel.

I argued for a long time that the "right" coach when UT found him would find talent that others overlooked and get more out of a team than the sum of its parts.

I also argued that time was not a luxury any UT coach could have without showing success.

Heupel broke out. He has done the things I have always thought would give a UT coach the chance for long term success. He's found talent that others rejected/overlooked/underevaluated. He has proven he can develop guys. He puts players in the best situation to maximize their chances of success. He's an outstanding leader of people.f

Contrary to what many argued stubbornly, he has produced success in a short time showing recruits that he can coach and also supercharging fanbase enthusiasm... and donations.

As @butchna points out... he also wasn't a "namebrand" coach when hired. Some considered him just another Dooley/Jones/Pruitt type of hire. Some thought even worse of him.

I don't know where it ends up but so far so good.

My hat is off to you... Great foresight.

. He’s just a placeholder till the next coach I honestly doubt he has one winning season while he’s here and it won’t be his fault really. This program is nuked and cratered for years to come nobody can come in here now and win right now.
I don’t usually highlight bad takes from 2 years ago, but this one is a doozy. Not the posters fault because he believed things would be out of Heupel’s control and not because he was a bad hire, but still…

Wasn’t he revealed as a Bama troll? He seems to have moved along.

Yeah, I can't throw the first stone here. I believed in, or tried to, Dooley, Kiffin, Jones, and (ugh) Pruitt. Was dead-set against Schiano.

One out of 5 ain't much of a batting average, so...can't throw the first stone. I'm glad Heupel has turned out to be (apparently) exactly what UT Football needed.

So we'll see.

Go Vols.

According to a lot of posters here when he was hired, this will be his last season and we'll be looking for a replacement next year.

Wah Waaahhhh...
According to others he had to be given 5 years and the expectations had to be low. That wouldn't have worked either.

Heupel has done what any coach had to do to have a chance of success. He succeeded early and beat expectations giving him recruiting credibility and fan support.

I think UT finally caught an "up and comer" at the right time.

I have a feeling he may have set the bar too high for himself. I’m betting if we slip to a couple of 9-4 records folks around here will be calling for another coaching change!

I think he'll find a home here provided the paymaster keeps the money flowing.

GO VOLS!!!

No. He may still not succeed. However what he did is NECESSARY for a coach to be successful at UT or other programs trying to reinsert themselves in the top tier. If "progress" is too slow then you don't have the recruiting credibility needed to push over the hump. If he had won 7 or even 8 games last year then opposing recruiters could have rightly questioned if he were just another in a long line of failed UT coaching hires.

Historically across college football, coaches that fail to win 10 games in their first 3 years almost never go on to win championships or have significant success at that school. You need players to turn a program around and you have to make a "splash" with recruits if you are at a program that's been down.

There will be questions if he has a couple of 4 loss seasons... and there should be. That's particularly true since it appears that UT's schedule will not include UGA every year after this year. The end of divisional play will actually level the field somewhat for UT considering no one else has the disadvantage of playing both Bama and UGA right now. But 11 wins bought him the credibility to have a chance. Eight wins or less likely would have been the beginning of the end.

That’s called BVS. We all have it. I found ways to be positive with all the hires since Fulmer was fired. Then I was highly disappointed. Honestly my biggest disappointment was Dooley. He is smart and knows football. Just doesn’t have the mentality or personality to be a head coach. He was definitely in over his head. Butch was just a used car salesman that followed Kelly around. Cornbread is a good position coach and possibly a pretty good D coordinator but is worse than Dooley as a head coach.
As much as we disagree on things, I was hopeful for a good offense and maybe a bridge to a better coach, when CJH was hired. I am pleasantly surprised.

What is Volnation's guess, as Heupel's time frame as our head coach? Anyone think he will be here for 10 years (as Fulmer stated the next coach should be)? I personally think he will be here three years maybe four at most. I think he will be our Matt Luke. Weather the NCAA storm and sanctions then be replaced. After all we have been through the last twelve years, I hope I am wrong and he is winning and thus here for the long haul.

Aged like milk.

Agreed, but.. Tyler Bray was def not boring to watch while he was here and even Dobbs.

Yep, Bray's O was putting up 40s and (Buddy Hackett lookalike)Sunseri's D was giving up Fiddy's, sad times to be a Vol
