He has to be extended or fired after season 4 at the latest otherwise recruiting will tank. HC always needs 3-4 years on his contract.

See I don't blieve that's really the case these days. Coaches leaving or being fired is commonplace. Plus with the loosening of the transfer rules, they aren't stuck at a school if they don't want to stay there.

These kids aren't dumb, they know that if the coach is successful, there's always the chance another school or the NFL comes calling, and if they're bad, they're going to get canned.

I think it's an advantage in recruiting for the HC to have 4 years on his contract at all times, that advantage might be getting less these days.

In modern football it makes no difference..... Kiffin had years of contract left at UT and we see (and players see) coaches are "loyal" to their career moves, though it's "terrible" if players are loyal to their career moves.

Josh Heupel had years left on his UCF contract and he was "loyal" to it.

Forget it. A coaching contract is toilet tissue waiting to be used.

Then you need to be talking to White because I'll bet the house that he extends CJH after year 3 if he can pull off a 7-8 win season.

Nah, I'm just saying the remaining time of a coach is a non factor in recruiting. Unless that coach is embedded, I mean really embedded in a program that's successful, he's got his agent listening to offers.

Elite recruits, too.... with the portal, are keeping their eyes open to bettering their career chances.

Treating football like it's still the 60s or 70s and players recruit to "State U" because it's a lifelong dream to play there...... is laughable. Great recruits and great coaches do what is good for their long-term career.

I agree with this.

Tennessee SHOULD win the following games in 2021:
Bowling Green, Tennessee Tech, South Alabama, Vanderbilt

Tennessee will be clear underdogs in the following games in 2021 (as things stand now):
@ Florida, @ Alabama, Georgia

So that leaves the "could go either way" games in 2021 (depending on various factors like coaching, depth, injuries, luck, talent, etc.):
Pittsburgh, @ Mizzou, South Carolina, Ole Miss, @ Kentucky

An IMPROVED season for CJH would likely be sweeping the favored games, winning 2-3 of the tossup games, and at least being competitive for most of the underdog games, perhaps a 6-6 to 7-5 type season

A SUCCESSFUL season for CJH would be 8-4 or better with a top 3-4 finish in the East

A 5-7 season with close losses to everyone would be slight improvement but grumblings would start

anything worse than 5-7 would be awful barring some kind of Draconian NCAA penalities which i don't see happening

Generally agree. Especially agree with the "competitive" aspect where we are underdogs.

Pittsburgh, SCAR, and Mizzou may not be as "toss up" as we think. Sjt thinks Mizzou is not as strong as people think. I and others believe SCAR is in worse shape that UT. I feel good about Pitt but it isnt based on anything besides fandom.

UK and Ole miss are the toss ups to a lean to them favored.

Well! Let’s see!
1 year. Penalties from the ncaa
2nd year to get over that, and recruit and get his system implemented
3rd year to get over the penalties and recruit
4th year recruit. That’ll make really his 3rd recruiting class
5th year should be rolling.
6th year winning everything

Remember “year zero”?

Why does everyone think Pitt is going to be an automatic W?

He will have as long as he needs as long as he can show improvement and some development in the players. Not expecting to win a championship in year 3

What is Volnation's guess, as Heupel's time frame as our head coach? Anyone think he will be here for 10 years (as Fulmer stated the next coach should be)? I personally think he will be here three years maybe four at most. I think he will be our Matt Luke. Weather the NCAA storm and sanctions then be replaced. After all we have been through the last twelve years, I hope I am wrong and he is winning and thus here for the long haul.

Just based on recent history? Only three years will mean another failure. And to go beyond seven? That seems to be putting too much trust in those in decision making roles. So, I found the only sane vote to be in the middle. By that time, if he is successful, someone else will offer him, and he will either get a huge raise from us or a lucrative package from them. At the moment? Why worry about then while we got plenty to worry about in the here and now?

As long as that rule is considered as "gospel", this team will never be relevant again. Continual change and chaos in a system based on constant change of player personnel will always be a recipe for failure.

Well, it's not like we have not been eating from that table for the entire century. Only difference have been a few different spices here and there, and the inclusion or exclusion of ice cream. At one time, we thought we pizzed excellence. This century? We have crapped failure so much, we ought to have invented and installed the worlds best septic system by now.

I think JH is gonna do fine and give us some surprises. If not, 3 year countdown to the Gruden thread.

The most interesting thing about looking back at this thread is, now that we're all a little more educated about who Josh Heupel is and what he's capable of, I think the poll results would look COMPLETELY different if run again. Probably 80% or higher in the "longer than 7 years" category.

Because Josh Heupel displays competence, and loyalty, and, dare I even say it, orange blood.

One thing hasn't changed, though. IknoxvolsI and his ilk still suck at starting threads and pretending to be Vols fans.

Go Vols!

I was skeptical about our coach's offense working with our personnel at O-Line, WR, and especially QB and RB. I knew our defense was short-handed, just like every season since 2012, but worse.
I was very worried.
When Hooker came into the Pitt game, I saw a new paradigm.
UT football was fun again.
It felt good to want to watch a game again.
