I have to say, the posters hear who insist on UT holding out for a "proven head coach" (PHC), make me laugh out loud. No candidate that our fanbase would generally agree is a PHC has any interest in the job. Why? Maybe - just maybe - because we give coaches such a short leash to be successful that no PHC wants to risk their reputation on trying to turn things around here.
Someone else posted about Saban's less than stellar early record at Michigan State. I think that that history is instructive. Certainly, where a team is not competitive, and is getting consistently blown out by other teams after a few seasons, a change must be considered. But if a coach is fielding a competitive team and generally winning the games that the team should win, I think some patience is warranted. You have to walk before you can run.
Firing coaches who can generate consistent winning seasons - even if that means 8-4 type records - is foolhardy, IMHO. And it will only make it harder to hire the PHC so many here lust after.
