I have to say, the posters hear who insist on UT holding out for a "proven head coach" (PHC), make me laugh out loud. No candidate that our fanbase would generally agree is a PHC has any interest in the job. Why? Maybe - just maybe - because we give coaches such a short leash to be successful that no PHC wants to risk their reputation on trying to turn things around here.

Someone else posted about Saban's less than stellar early record at Michigan State. I think that that history is instructive. Certainly, where a team is not competitive, and is getting consistently blown out by other teams after a few seasons, a change must be considered. But if a coach is fielding a competitive team and generally winning the games that the team should win, I think some patience is warranted. You have to walk before you can run.

Firing coaches who can generate consistent winning seasons - even if that means 8-4 type records - is foolhardy, IMHO. And it will only make it harder to hire the PHC so many here lust after.

Same question to you. Since Fulmer who have we fired too soon?

Name one coach since Fulmer we fired too early? I'll wait.

I get your point and it is very, valid.

I'll do you one better. Name one that we did not fire too late including Fulmer.

Program was already spiraling downward and 2005 just showcased that! Fulmer should have been gone after that season!

The entire Dooley era should have never taken place. He should have never been hired. But, then again, who else was there?

Anybody who really thought Butch Jones was going to get it done after his third year, especially after that Arkansas game, should not even be allowed to be a college football fan!

Then, year two under Pruitt showed he was not going to be the guy! We can look past year one with any new coach coming to just about any team and especially the situation Pruitt walked into here. However, the Ga State loss told EVERYONE he was not going to get it done. Then, to have Fulmer give him a raise and extension?!?!?!?!?

I agree that we were at minimum 3 years late in firing CPF. We should have made Kippy interim when CLK bolted and took our time to find a coach and if we would have done that we probably would have never had CBJ or the Gump.

5 years. What a surprise! That's all we got. My brain hurts a lot.

What is Volnation's guess, as Heupel's time frame as our head coach? Anyone think he will be here for 10 years (as Fulmer stated the next coach should be)? I personally think he will be here three years maybe four at most. I think he will be our Matt Luke. Weather the NCAA storm and sanctions then be replaced. After all we have been through the last twelve years, I hope I am wrong and he is winning and thus here for the long haul.
Well since you made this silly specuation thread up, I will say you are wrong. I feel like Heupel and staff will be here for a good while. Looking forward to it! Super excited about the future. GBO!!!!!

I hope his staff isn't here long term. If his staff is here long term it means they're not doing a good enough job to get promotion offers from other schools. I'm hoping he's replacing a couple every year because they keep getting hired away.

Get the mouthy boosters out of the program and he may last for a decade. With them in the mix, he's toast in 48 months or less.

He's got a 6 year $4M/yr contract with an extra year if (when, actually) we get NCAA sanctions. The buyout is 100% until the end 2023, 75% until the of 2025, and 50% after that.

Fire him after 3yrs? $12M (assuming sanctions)

That structure tells me he has until after the end of 2025, at the very minimum. If he's ultra successful, the NFL may take a run at him before then. If he's ultra awful, he'll be a wealthy OC/QB coach somewhere.

He fails here and it's over for UT football.

We are 20 years removed from being relevant and if we are still irrelevant at 25 years then it's time to realize we are never coming back.

I think this is a really complicated question to answer. You can’t consistently win big without big recruits. You can’t *consistently* land big recruits without some wins. Seems like a conundrum that some people on here are stuck in when it comes to condemn CJH to failure. And they’re not totally wrong, because it is a cycle that’s hard to break. However, if you’re a bit more nuanced, there is a path to success again for UT.

First- fix the culture here. No more backstabbing. We need every player on the roster, every coach on the payroll, and paperwork jockey in the AD pulling in the same direction.

Second- separate ourselves from the SEC bottom dwellers. Guys, we can’t beat Bama or even UGA right now. But we absolutely should NOT be losing to UK or Vandy either, just like Bama and UGA aren’t losing to us. This comes with competent coaches who develop the talent they bring in, or at least don’t get in the way.

Third- gain more local prominence. Be a stable program. Put guys in the NFL. Develop players. Show your recruiting base you’re a better program than your mid-power peers like UNC, South Carolina, Ole Miss, eventually Auburn and UF. We put slightly better results on the field, demonstrate positive outcomes for players off the field, and sooner or later these top 300 guys don’t wanna go to Auburn or Ole Miss or UK or USC. They want to come here again. And top 300 guys with good development and scheme in place brings us to..

Fourth- start beating teams you aren’t supposed to. Guys, Kirby is only Pruitt with a better recruiting base and no proven cheating. I literally can’t think of someone doing less with more talent. I live in Atlanta, and the UGA fans down here know it. Similarly- how long can Dan Mullen keep his mouth shut and not piss people off at UF? With the right level of depth, scheme, development and close-but-not-superior talent, we CAN beat those teams. And when we do, we can recruit like them. And when we recruit like them, we can play with Bama, and OU, and Clemson. The door is never shut on a program with our facilities, fan base, resources, and history. But you can’t skip steps one through four. I’m not guaranteeing CJH makes all that happen, and to many of your points, it’s more likely he fails than succeeds. Maybe he does succeed though, so can we not write him off before he gets the chance to try? Because the one thing that CAN doom our program is if we as fans stop believing we can succeed.
Kirby is only Pruitt with a better recruiting base and no proven cheating

I think you are pretty close to the way I feel except 1 thing, Dooley. Its hard to find a coach to replace a legend. Also I think you left of lane. He is a pretty good coach but not a good person.
I have stated if JH is decent and can bring the team into the top 20 in the next 3 years, let him stay.
If by then we can see as we could with these other coaches its time to go, 4hen its time to go. If it's in the gray area, 8 would let him stay if his recruiting top 20 talent and has fun teams to watch.

I tell him and the media. 5 years, we will not revisit his contract negotiations until the conclusion of his 4th season (unless cheating, behavior unbecoming of a HC, etc surfaces). If he wins a NC or goes 0-12, he has 5 years at a minimum. The head coaching changes have got to stop. I get we don't want to be losers, but at what point is it a self fulfilling prophecy.

He has to be extended or fired after season 4 at the latest otherwise recruiting will tank. HC always needs 3-4 years on his contract.
