Stokes definitely likes y'all, and y'all are in deep with him. I believe he even wore a Utk hat (or one of his boys did) whilst sitting behind the Tigers bench earlier this year. He would be a huge get, someone that you could hold over our heads.

Psh, for every Stokes there are about 5 more top recruits lining up to go to Memphis. I think one major recruit every few years is the best that we can hope for as far as Memphis goes.

I haven't checked out your boards, but are y'all worried about Mike Anderson coming into your backyard now?

Some are, some aren't. Mike Anderson has always targeted Memphis, he did at UAB and Mizzou. I personally am a bit worried because Arkansas doesn't have the best track record with playing fair (or at least as fair as one can get) in the recruiting game.

Right now, much to the chagrin of a lot on this board (I can understand it, you guys are Volunteers fans), Memphis is in a much better state than Arkansas is. The shadow of Nolan Richardson doesn't loom as large as it did in the 90's, and the Memphis program is infinitely more stable than it was 2 years ago on this day (when Cal left). We have definitely taken our lickings in the past 2 years, but everyone in the program from top to bottom are learning on the fly. Anderson will be another test for us...hopefully we can learn from it.

J3 has Calipari traveling to Memphis more and more now. It gives him a reason to visit for basketball instead of mistresses. Pearl came to watch him play a few times as well.

Without the distraction of Spring football (or even Autumn football for that matter), we follow basketball recruits at a very young age at Memphis.

Listen, I am a HUGE Tigers fan. My earliest memories are of going to games at the Liberty Bowl with my family. I was born right by the University, and have been bred to hate all things SEC, but I would be kidding myself if I thought Memphis football was awesome. One of my best friends played for Memphis, and I still follow them with as much zeal as I do with basketball...but I gotta be real. We are a basketball school, and our administration doesn't take football seriously. Y'all obviously have our number in football, so me painting a different picture would be ludicrous.

That's the main reason why I never get offended when all my Utk friends (or any Utk fan for that matter) talk trash about our program.

Good luck with your coaching search, I have a vested interest in whoever you guys hire.

Pastner is a better recruiter than almost everyone we are talking about hiring.

His team did seem extremely undisciplined this year, they looked like an all star team that was not playing together.

He is just a boy still and coaching. If UT hires him they need to wait untill he grows up.:hi::lolabove: how old is he?

actually, JP has a lot to do with it. Calipari didnt recruit many local kids and most of the ones he did got away (Thad, Leslie Mac, EWill). Some that Cal didnt recruit have had good college careers- Terico White and Buckner at Ole Miss, for example. Josh appears to have locked the city down. He's going to take the best players that he wants and leave the rest for whoever to pick from. There's a bunch of D1 guys- Stokes, Newby, Golden, J3, Austin Nichols and Laron Black- coming up the next few years.


And like I originally stated, hiring Pastner will not bring Memphis players to Knoxville. Pastner gets them because he coaches at Memphis.



That being said, I agree with you to a degree. Most of the local guys grow up wanting to be Tigers. Always been that way. Always will be. Josh just uses that to his advantage. Therefore, it wont matter who the new UT coach is, he'll have an uphill battle against Pastner for Memphis kids.

Guess #5 recruit Will Barton and # 10 Kendrick wanted to be "hometown" heroes even though they both lived at least 400 miles away.

I guess your definition of "special" is different than most. What exactly should a first time HC, only 34 years of age, who takes over a decimated program do to be considered special? Landing 2 5* recruits not from Memphis in his first recruiting year as HC? Taking a team whose top 5 players are freshmen to the NCAA tourney in year 2, even after kicking 2 players off the team for discipline problems? Landing another 5* in his second recruiting season?
