Josh Pastner- Memphis

I went to Jelans high school and he was very overrated coming out. He ruined team chemistry, was lazy, and even cost us some games. There was at least one if not two players on our team that were out of the rivals 250 and better both fundamentally and athletically than Jelan. Memphis should be glad he's gone.

I know Rivals is not the end-all-be-all when it comes to talent evaluations and they do miss on people, but I don't see them missing so badly that one guy is a 5* and two others who are "better" are not even ranked, despite being on the same team and having opportunities to prove their worth. I'm sure its very possible that he was not one of the top 15 players in the country, just like Hopson shouldn't have been a top 5 player. Hopson was ranked too high, but he wasn't grossly missranked.

There's no questioning his attitude problems, hence why he's not playing anymore.

Well seeing as how those two led the team in scoring, rebounding, and assists I guess rivals did make a mistake. The fact that both of them were undersized for their positions (pg and pf) probably played a huge part in their ranking. But trust me, Jelan was not deserving of his five star and had he been able to play, it would have been very obvious. Ari Stewart of Wake and Richard Howell of NC state played the year before and were both far far better players. Both were four stars. I don't know why rivals was so off with him but he was not even one of the best in Georgia like they said he was.

I was referring to the way the C-USA inflates its Conference's RPI to get more teams into the tournament.

Yea, because your bottom feeders like Auburn and LSU played suchtough non con schedules too. Please, every conference does the same thing.

Anybody that saw Memphis play this season would understand that UT wants no part of Pastner at this point in his career. He might become a great coach one day. He will certainly recruit well. But he had no control over that team this year. It was hard to watch at times.

Conference USA taking big steps in hopes to boost RPI - Campus Rivalry: College Football & Basketball News, Recruiting, Game Picks, and More - USATODAY.com

The league feels that the bottom half of its standings weigh down the league's overall RPI as those teams schedule non-conference games against Division I powers, largely for the pay day that accompanies such a matchup -- even if it means a notch in the loss column.

But now the league thinks that by playing non-conference games in which there is a realistic chance of the C-USA team winning, the entire league will benefit in the RPI when all is said and done.

Ugly.

Candidate for new coach
Thoughts?

Talk about an unproven commodity.....He has recruited okay but there's a serious question about his coaching and the biggest thing I saw with his team is respect for the coach....especially in the huddles during time outs....command presence just wasn't there...now he may grow into that but it's not there yet.....and the handling of the Kendricks kid (letting him back on the team and dismissing him after at least two if not more player moms approached and said if he's back we go elsewhere) really raises a red flag....Definitely jury still out...and he would love to be back out west as well....that's no secret.....

Oh its you again....Man you're more regular than our regulars....You might need to start a cool Memphis site like this so you won't have too spend so much time with the Big Orange....

Give Josh a little time with the way he brings good players in and he will be a winner at Memphis.

If you can't win 20 plus and make it to the tourney EVERY year at Memphis with the schedule and the conference you should be gone immediately.....Easiest job to win at that I can think of.....Not much debate on that....

That's why Calipari was pretty open about NOT wanting to go to a Big 6 Conference if the opportunity had ever presented itself.

If the guy is an up and coming young coach why not look at him, but I'm not sure he has proven anything yet. They did play Arizona a good game and he has showen he can recruit.

Lot of total BB ignorance in this thread, We will be lucky to get a coach as good as Pastner

What??? C'mon man, I like coach Paz and I think he will grow to be a good coach with time time, but we are talking about UT here and SEC. basketball. I dont see why a program like UT would run out and beg a unproven coach like Pastner. What am I missing?

You obviously didn't pay much attention when you were at games because Kendrick led Wheeler in scoring, assists and was second in rebounds.

The Kendrick deal was basically a culture contrast between Jelan and Pastner. Both have accepted their wrongs but agreed they couldnt move on together in their best interests.

ITs kind of like divorce really. Most of the time its ugly and vindictive but sometimes its really for the best. Jelan still talks to all the team and Coach P when he is in town.

I know personally a couple of folks who were involved in this deal.....It got REALLY ugly before JP realized what he had done by even considering to let him back....He probably learned a great deal from this incident....at least lets hope so....and Andy Kennedy must really be hard up to let this kid around his program...havent had a chance to talk to one of the assistant coaches there yet about but it didnt seem to be the prudent thing to do...but Andy's trying to regain control right now...

Jelan isnt a bad kid or person. He had a great upbringing in Atlanta. He is what I would call "high maintenance". Lots of unnecessary baggage but the kid can play. Its a matter of being able to appease him without totally selling out. Pastner is very firm in his character and wasnt willing to back down. Jelan overreacted and they both decided to part ways like gentlemen once tempers subsided.

Just because he was young and some idiots actually made him their head coach doesn't make him "up-and-coming"
