'21 JUCO CB Roterius Torrence (Auburn transfer)

"I'm one of the biggest homers on this site, but this kid sucks"

makes sense

My stance actually does make sense if you’re capable of critical thinking.

Also, I never said he sucked - just with clearly outlined reasoning questioned this commitment.

Read slower so maybe you can keep up.

"I’m one of the biggest homers on this site, but if you’re excited about a commitment from an unranked JUCO who’s only other offers were Utah State and ECU, then you’re simply a cheerleader for the team"

Let’s be honest, it’s understandable for someone to be concerned with a pickup with no rating (though there would equally be no sense in someone needlessly bashing a kid they know nothing about).

That said, I think there’s two major factors we all need to watch for: 1) In the Fall, or over the next couple years, we’ll have a better idea what kind of evaluators and developers we have. Wait and see is the only reasonable approach here IMO. And 2) as stated before, I believe evaluations from the recruiting services are going to be skewed if not insufficient this cycle and maybe the next due to Covid. For that reason, refer back to #1.

I’m excited for the Fall!

If I’m starving, I’ll eat Ramen. But I’m not gonna be excited about eating Ramen. That’s my point.

Not a single person on this forum is qualified to intelligently determine if this kid can play. The two generally accepted metrics we use are offers and rankings. Rankings are sketchy for many reasons in normal years - but especially this year.

I’m not so much concerned with his lack of a ranking. What is alarming is his playing a premium position at a top flight JUCO with high visibility - and the lack of offers. Every team needs corners. UGA is loaded on defense and they still offered and accepted kids from the portal.

Can Martinez get something out of him? Sure it’s possible. Could Martinez get something more out of a ‘22 kid that this commitment takes a number from? Very likely.

Being skeptical about this doesn’t make someone a “negavol.” When guys like Means and Brandon Davis etc were signed everyone pointed to DeAndre Baker and how we had no right to question Pruitt. Well, there is a very strong likelihood that this player contributes as much as those two.
We know recruiting services are struggling to rank kids this year......how do we know they are listing all the teams that are reaching out to this kid?

Callahan made a good point on podcast. Spring season really hurt Juco kids hoping to make the jump. Most of the top power 5 were not going to hold scholarships from fall signing period for jucos. The spots went to Hs kids and transfers. Ro didn’t start freshman yr at Hutch which is a top Juco program. He starts this year and has really good spring season but not many people had spots left to offer for current class like TN.

Another point he made was the unknown of how does the spring season affect guys like Ro and Crawford turning around and playing again in 3 months. I think both of those are long term plays that are being in for depth this year and with hope that they turn into starters in future years.

Well who do you suggest we get considering the sanctions and penalties looming over our heads right now due to the last staff and Ronald McDonald?

Sounds like Mr. Thread Starter isn't a real Vol fan. Maybe he was too busy making threads and didn't know we have pending sanctions looming.

What specifically don't people like? Very little feedback on this question. One guru says on film he's beat a lot. Mostly what he's watching is a trail technique. He is not "beat" as long as the receiver is in arms length. When he does this on film he does a good job of undercutting routes. Coach Martinez will build on that and help him refine using his length to his advantage. But, hey, let's get all puffed up and call people sunshine pumpers and cheerleaders if they don't have high level " critical thinking" skills. Working on shaving my legs for the skirt but had to stop after lawnmower blade got ruined.

There's nothing wrong with being concerned or not being excited. But if no one is qualified to evaluate, and there are always going to be players that don't work out in every class, we just have to say "welcome to Rocky Top " and go on. Only other choice we have is start running down the players that are choosing to play for Tennessee. I think the coaches are getting the best they can right now to fill the holes we have.
