'21 JUCO CB Roterius Torrence (Auburn transfer)

If I’m starving, I’ll eat Ramen. But I’m not gonna be excited about eating Ramen. That’s my point.

Not a single person on this forum is qualified to intelligently determine if this kid can play. The two generally accepted metrics we use are offers and rankings. Rankings are sketchy for many reasons in normal years - but especially this year.

I’m not so much concerned with his lack of a ranking. What is alarming is his playing a premium position at a top flight JUCO with high visibility - and the lack of offers. Every team needs corners. UGA is loaded on defense and they still offered and accepted kids from the portal.

Can Martinez get something out of him? Sure it’s possible. Could Martinez get something more out of a ‘22 kid that this commitment takes a number from? Very likely.

Being skeptical about this doesn’t make someone a “negavol.” When guys like Means and Brandon Davis etc were signed everyone pointed to DeAndre Baker and how we had no right to question Pruitt. Well, there is a very strong likelihood that this player contributes as much as those two.

We appreciate that you start recruit threads. But it doesn't make you qualified to know if they are worthy or not of the rankings and stars accompanying them. Okay?

2) Furthermore, You don't know who IS qualified on this board or not. We're all fans- including you- but that doesn't put us in the same boat. This is a 6'4 kid that is running with smaller skill players and more than holding his own. Law of Biomechanics or the components of it are heavily affected by gravity- IOW the taller you are the more difficult it is to maintain the same balance and reaction as someone who is smaller but of the same physical proportion. Not saying this kid is Randy Moss, or Michael Jordan, but this ain't 6'3", 4.8 speed Jauan Jennings trying to play CB...

3) You can't always go by what school offers they have. Different schools have different player boards.
And regards to the visibility, he didn't play that long because everything got shut down, but he still was a starter on said high visibility JUCO, and put up impressive stats in short order. School offers ARE however a more reliable method than stars
because--
--Yes. Cam Sutton wasn't even a top 100 player in Georgia his SR year. DeAndra Baker etc...
It does happen ALL THE TIME actually being that half the NFL are 3 stars and below ( despite the number of drafted players every year almost being the same number of 4 stars created every year)

This is a good looking prospect, at a position of need. Lucky for all of us. His stars or lack thereof no longer matter once he wears the Power T.

They do play Bama every year. Those guys were special, but Florida has them, UGA has them, LSU has them... that kind of speed and talent is all over the SEC.
Waddle and Smith played FOR Bama. One won the Heisman and the other was on pace playing AGAINST your other examples.

Some good depth, I guess. His film is not that impressive to me. He is big and physical, but seems slow. The next Waddle or Smith will blow by him.
You mean like they did against Derek Stingley- future 1st rnd draft pick?
No one can guard guy like that one on one. Thats why you play different coverages.

This kid reminds me a lot of Lonnie Johnson out of Gary, Indiana.
- 2 star kid that played with Kentucky and was drafted by the Texans 2nd rd.

Yeah, no kidding. What I'm saying is, the way college football is, the next Smith could be at Georgia, Florida, Bama, LSU... hell, even UK or Mizzou right now and we don't know it and this guy would get toasted when matched up. Again, just my opinion based on watching his film - slow.

Yeah, I get that those guys were special, my point being that there is WR talent all over the SEC.

I hope you're right. Maybe the guys he was matched up against are slow and he was just keeping pace, it is JUCO.

I watched it and had the opposite take...Murica.

My stance actually does make sense if you’re capable of critical thinking.

Also, I never said he sucked - just with clearly outlined reasoning questioned this commitment.

Read slower so maybe you can keep up.

I actually like this, he is a lengthy guy who is good at Man to Man. His height means QBs have to try and throw over the top of him. I think the pickup actually makes sense especially since he has 3 years left.

Very measured argument.

We are recruiting as poorly as we ever have. That doesn't mean it's all Heupel and his new staff's fault - some of it certainly is. People think to support the program you have to write a blank check of excitement. I don't think that's the case.
Explain how we are “recruiting as worse as we ever have please…..” we have 4 commits and all of those commits have high upside, on top of that we haven’t even started the Season and there haven’t been any Official visits or camps allowed.

Once Official visits and camps are allowed our recruiting is going to pick up. It will then continue to pick up when Huepel and our boys show what our offense and defense can do.

If anything this staff has been extremely impressive by what they have done with the transfer portal.

Have to be able to get off the press to show that kind of speed and if we do face that kind of speed this dude would be perfect for a press zone look.

Surely part of this analysis has to include:
A) his football season was played this spring
B) it was his first full season as a CB
C) few (if any?) top Power 5 programs had the capacity to take him this late in the process

I’m not bothered at all by this take

Martinez is the best CB coach we’ve had in the last dozen or so years. I know I’m not qualified to evaluate if this guy can play but Martinez certainly is. I trust him over hand-wringing message board posters.

You're exactly right with the camps, wait until camps open up. Plus, kids are being told UT is going to be on a 2-3 yr bowl ban. I'm impressed with what this coaching staff is doing with the black clouds hanging over the programs head. Could it be better? Absolutely.
The star ratings are not accurate. Some of these kids are going to fall/climb in the rankings. People act like kids don't get better as time goes on.

I understand the star ratings being off right now due to the circumstances however offer lists are still relevant and his offer list is not reassuring

He was getting ready to have offers from Auburn, Oregon and other schools.
Lol what? Getting ready to? You really think those schools are scared to go after someone committed to our dumpster fire of a program? If they really wanted him they would offer him regardless of him being committed and they would pursue.

Look, I hope the kid does well, but there's a credible argument to be made that we would have been better off not filling this scholarship and used it as a "we voluntarily took away a scholarship in response to the violations by the prior staff" angle.

Some peep have arguments against everything. Not saying this player comes with a guarantee, but we already lost boatloads of players by going public and firing coaches. Your message is that we should not even be trying. How wrong is that?

Those schools just started communicating with him, but he felt good with UT and committed. Who's to say those schools don't offer?
