'21 JUCO CB Roterius Torrence (Auburn transfer)

If I’m starving, I’ll eat Ramen. But I’m not gonna be excited about eating Ramen. That’s my point.

Not a single person on this forum is qualified to intelligently determine if this kid can play. The two generally accepted metrics we use are offers and rankings. Rankings are sketchy for many reasons in normal years - but especially this year.

I’m not so much concerned with his lack of a ranking. What is alarming is his playing a premium position at a top flight JUCO with high visibility - and the lack of offers. Every team needs corners. UGA is loaded on defense and they still offered and accepted kids from the portal.

Can Martinez get something out of him? Sure it’s possible. Could Martinez get something more out of a ‘22 kid that this commitment takes a number from? Very likely.

Being skeptical about this doesn’t make someone a “negavol.” When guys like Means and Brandon Davis etc were signed everyone pointed to DeAndre Baker and how we had no right to question Pruitt. Well, there is a very strong likelihood that this player contributes as much as those two.
Very measured argument.

We are recruiting as poorly as we ever have. That doesn't mean it's all Heupel and his new staff's fault - some of it certainly is. People think to support the program you have to write a blank check of excitement. I don't think that's the case.

Callahan made a good point on podcast. Spring season really hurt Juco kids hoping to make the jump. Most of the top power 5 were not going to hold scholarships from fall signing period for jucos. The spots went to Hs kids and transfers. Ro didn’t start freshman yr at Hutch which is a top Juco program. He starts this year and has really good spring season but not many people had spots left to offer for current class like TN.

Another point he made was the unknown of how does the spring season affect guys like Ro and Crawford turning around and playing again in 3 months. I think both of those are long term plays that are being in for depth this year and with hope that they turn into starters in future years.
I agree..... this year especially..... we need to boom all guys that choose to be Vols..... don’t judge them until you see them perform in a Tennessee uniform......even in a normal year.... I have been ecstatic over drew Richmond, Wanya Morris, Quavarious Crouch and not a single one of them performed close to an elite level while here....I was not excited about Jabari Small but now I feel he has the potential to be a stud this year.

Some people get excited because there is a possibility that things could go right. Some choose to focus on what could be because of the info we have. Some choose to focus on what could go wrong because of the info we have. We DON'T know. But it's a choice. But you be you. Doesn't appear you're having as much fun as I am though.

Agreed. I am having zero fun.

Exactly! All those highly rated players that have disappointed us! I am liking getting back to cheering for players that want to be at Tennessee and appreciate the opportunity. I remember the build up to the championship. That was fun! Let's do that again!

We still have to recruit at an elite level to reach a championship..... hopefully these coaches will be a better judge of what an elite player is.

One thing I noticed about Torrence is the way he plays press at the line. Ball is snapped and he hits the receiver hard or muscles the WR out of bounds. Do Tennessee CBs ever do that? The kid is strong and aggressive. He does not look speedy or quick, but he does have a good burst and looks fast when he hits stride, covers and closes and makes plays. I don't know the level of competition he's against in the video, but Torrence looks like a good player. Talk about tall; he is tall and strong. I hope he will develop into a good player we're glad to have on the field.

Edit: Torrence played CB and WR in HS. Highlights show good moves in his routes, with fast feet and sure hands. He blocks aggressively, putting defenders on the turf. What's not to like about this guy?

Look, I hope the kid does well, but there's a credible argument to be made that we would have been better off not filling this scholarship and used it as a "we voluntarily took away a scholarship in response to the violations by the prior staff" angle.

We need players NOW. Always contingent on them delivering, but if you wait until there’s clear sailing to hoist your mainsail you might run out of provisions. All I’m reading is how destitute our defense is approaching the season. What makes me think that selling this satisfying sanctions angle would get blasted when one of our current CB’s gets a hip pointer and we trot out a walk-on?

A like for the post and the sailing reference.

I get what you're saying, but is there that much difference between trotting out Cheyenne Labruzza as opposed to Romello Edwards?
