'19 JUCO WR Javonta Payton (Tennessee commit)

“i would say i was pretty surprised, because i’ve been mainly focused on the university of mississippi, and a lot of people really haven’t been talking to me as much as they used to. So, when they offered me, it was kind of a shock,” said payton. “(pruitt) loves my speed, and when he watched my film, he loves how i play and how i move. And he sees that how i play is natural, and a lot of receivers don’t use their hands like i use mine. … he just loves how i move around on the field.”

“(johnson) actually saw me play when i went to the memphis camp in 2016, and he loved how i played back then,” payton said. “seeing him, it was just a great experience, hanging out with each other and stuff like that. He kind of already knew how i played.” “the one thing i can say about the new staff: I love how they talk to the players, get to know the players, especially,” payton said. “i know, when i went up there, they asked me a lot of questions, not trying to get to know me as a football player, but as an individual. I would say that’s the main thing that i noticed about them.”

“right now, i’m still 100 percent with ole miss,” he said. “i’m just trying to finish my season, get bigger, faster, stronger and just see what happens at the end of the year. "i mean, it would be nice to be close to family and all,” payton said. “coming out of high school, that was a big part for me. At one point, i did want to stay in-state. But me living in mississippi for the past year, it has let me see that there’s a lot to explore. I love being away from home sometimes, so it’s not too bad.”

ole miss coach matt luke’s staff also is among the reasons he still likes the rebels. “i love the coaching staff,” payton said. “a lot of schools didn’t really help me as i was coming out of high school — my grades, trying to get me eligible to play. At ole miss, they were very loyal to me at the beginning and at the end, so that’s one thing i can say about them. I really appreciate them for that, for always having my back.”

Seems like we wouldn't have room for him with all the other guys we have on the board. Would he be a last minute take if he wanted in or do you think they make room/save him a spot?

Who do we really have on the line, Knox might pick Arkansas, Curry is leaning toward Auburn, we need one more receiver. Payton was a dynamic player out of high school that just didn’t take of his grades.

Well we have Keyton and I thought Curry was leaning more Vol than Auburn. Alontae Taylor is a WR now (I think) so I just assumed WR was not a huge priority with this class. I meant others as in other recruits in general, not specifically WRs. I assumed we have other needs with the last 10 spots.

Since when?

Alontae's twitter disagrees with you....

WR probably not a huge need, but it would be nice to have a speedster at WR to take the top off of defenses. Not sure we have a guy like that right now.

Javonta was a stud in high school. Despite his low 3 star ranking out of high school. He has serious sec speed. Would not be shocked if he is higher on the board than curry or Knox. Despite being a juco.
