-247i want to go to tennessee-alabama, but i also want to go to tennessee-florida, said payton, whos ranked by 247sports as the nations no. 433 overall prospect and no. 60 wide receiver in the 2017 class.
i mean, im planning on taking my official visit for one of them. I just dont know which one it is yet.
the 6-foot-1, 170-pound payton said a conversation with tennessee wide receiver josh malone, a fellow nashville-area native who hosted payton during his latest trip to knoxville, convinced him that he might want to see the vols play florida.
i was talking to some of the players, and they were telling me florida is, like, i guess their rival, payton said. i heard its a live game, and i like going to live games, so thats one reason i want to go.
(malone) was like, if you want to come up here and have a good time, the week to come is when we play florida.' its a rivalry game. All the fans are going to be yelling. Thats a sold-out game, so thats why everybody really wants us there at that game.
payton, who already has received scholarship offers from 11 schools, said hes still getting in touch with a lot of coaches. he said ole miss, lsu and texas a&m recently have continued to show interest in him.
"Florida is like their rival, I guess."
That says 1 of 2 things:
1) when you lose 11x in a row, no one considers (or knows) it a rivalry anymore
2) a lot of these TN kids, especially middle and west TN, have no ties to or knowledge of UT football
You can never really tell about competition level.... but his highlights are pretty impressive. How has he flown under the radar for so long?
They play some of the best competition in the state.
A teammate of his had similar stats in the same year.
The offense isn't known for putting up huge numbers for WRS.
Hes certainly a late bloomer. We've had a mostly good relationship with that high school.

Payton is extremely talented.
I know u and me disagree on this, but they actually have improved instate relationships quite a bit.
They have a team of consultants around the state that look even in the most remote places...
I'm critical when I think it is appropriate. Unlike some of the ostriches around, I think instate recruiting is a problem right now for UT.
BUT.... Jones IMO is basically starting from scratch. Dooley did nothing to help instate relationships. Kiffin thought it was important but left before really doing much about it. Fulmer calculated that time was often better invested out of state. To have the kinds of relationships that are needed is an investment of time.... and likely a good bit of it.
