'19 JUCO WR Javonta Payton (Tennessee commit)

Nah, he gets too big and his blocking would be overly utilized.

He has a lot of work to do with his hands if he's gonna be a WR at Tennessee. By "work to do with his hands" I mean hand placement inside of a DB so that he doesn't get called for holding when he's blocking for our running game.

MTSU, Memphis, Vols are the early favorites but he is starting to get more interest from big programs like OM

NB4 CrunchyLeb shows up telling us how Butch screwed this one up and pushed him to OM. :yess:

IMO. Butch told him to look somewhere else because Tee told Butch he's just trolling Dabo and will return on NSD and bring lots of top recruits with him

“i want to go to tennessee-alabama, but i also want to go to tennessee-florida,” said payton, who’s ranked by 247sports as the nation’s no. 433 overall prospect and no. 60 wide receiver in the 2017 class.

“i mean, i’m planning on taking my official visit for one of them. I just don’t know which one it is yet.”

the 6-foot-1, 170-pound payton said a conversation with tennessee wide receiver josh malone, a fellow nashville-area native who hosted payton during his latest trip to knoxville, convinced him that he might want to see the vols play florida.

“i was talking to some of the players, and they were telling me florida is, like, i guess their rival,” payton said. “i heard it’s a live game, and i like going to live games, so that’s one reason i want to go.

“(malone) was like, ‘if you want to come up here and have a good time, the week to come is when we play florida.' it’s a rivalry game. All the fans are going to be yelling. That’s a sold-out game, so that’s why everybody really wants us there at that game.”

payton, who already has received scholarship offers from 11 schools, said he’s “still getting in touch with a lot of coaches.” he said ole miss, lsu and texas a&m recently have continued to show interest in him.

You can never really tell about competition level.... but his highlights are pretty impressive. How has he flown under the radar for so long?

grades are a concern. Vols are high on him though. Plus if you don't attend the big camps, you dont get the star rating.

"Florida is like their rival, I guess."

That says 1 of 2 things:

1) when you lose 11x in a row, no one considers (or knows) it a rivalry anymore

2) a lot of these TN kids, especially middle and west TN, have no ties to or knowledge of UT football

We need our coaches in these TN high schools a lot more. JMO

They play some of the best competition in the state.

A teammate of his had similar stats in the same year.
The offense isn't known for putting up huge numbers for WRS.

Hes certainly a late bloomer. We've had a mostly good relationship with that high school.

Eric Gordon
Kyle Phillips
Vincent Perry *

Payton is extremely talented.

I know u and me disagree on this, but they actually have improved instate relationships quite a bit.

They have a team of consultants around the state that look even in the most remote places...

I'm critical when I think it is appropriate. Unlike some of the ostriches around, I think instate recruiting is a problem right now for UT.

BUT.... Jones IMO is basically starting from scratch. Dooley did nothing to help instate relationships. Kiffin thought it was important but left before really doing much about it. Fulmer calculated that time was often better invested out of state. To have the kinds of relationships that are needed is an investment of time.... and likely a good bit of it.

Check out his Senior scrimmage highlights. Outstanding burst from the wildcat position.

Senior Year Highlights - Javonta Payton highlights - Hudl

Stevens -is a Louisiana kid.
Rodgers- wants to step out of fathers legacy.
Higgins- for right now- feels like the money is through Clemson.
Ridchardson- not recruiting him
Phillips - not recruiting him (for some crazy reason)

Hurd
Jrm
Barnett
Phillips
Roberson
J Jones
Richmond
Malone
Foreman
J Smith
Kelly Jr
Martin
Jennings
Gualden

That's 14 starter capable players from a potential Championship team
SJ. All from Tennessee.

Show me a great Fulmer team that EVER had that many in-state guys as starters.

Good post, sometimes it's just that simple and hopefully seeing it laid out like that will start to help it get thru to some posters.

Recruiting can most of the time be an "anybody's guess" type of endeavor.

I think this kid is more talented than some much more highly rated wrs we're after.
