Check out his Senior scrimmage highlights. Outstanding burst from the wildcat position.

Senior Year Highlights - Javonta Payton highlights - Hudl

Stevens -is a Louisiana kid.
Rodgers- wants to step out of fathers legacy.
Higgins- for right now- feels like the money is through Clemson.
Ridchardson- not recruiting him
Phillips - not recruiting him (for some crazy reason)

Hurd
Jrm
Barnett
Phillips
Roberson
J Jones
Richmond
Malone
Foreman
J Smith
Kelly Jr
Martin
Jennings
Gualden

That's 14 starter capable players from a potential Championship team
SJ. All from Tennessee.

Show me a great Fulmer team that EVER had that many in-state guys as starters.

In-state talent is a very new thing for Tennessee. I've heard Doug Mathews talk about it a million times.....he used to recruit middle and west Tennessee and they were lucky to get 3 or 4 D1 players on an annual basis out of the state for years. Fulmer didn't have the luxury of 10-12, even 15 good to great prospects every year like we're seeing here recently. An Al Wilson or John Henderson or Reggie Cobb was a rarity back in the 90s and early 2000s.

Draw a 250 mile radius around Knoxville. We're in one of the best recruiting areas in the country. We will capitalize.

The talent was here... imo
It just wasn't getting devekoped or exposed.

But to YOUR point, does that not validate that Butch is capatalizing on Tennessee's emerging high school football talent?,

Rivals has this guy as the 3rd ranked WR in state behind Rodgers and Higgins.

But hes ranked ahead of Princeton Fant.

Interesting.

With all due respect Little, I don't think so. I've continuously heard that the recent population "explosion" in Davidson, Williamson and, in particular, Rutherford county in Middie Tennessee has multiplied by several times the number of Division 1 players in the state. Again, I've heard this from multiple sources, but in particular from Doug Mathews, who used to recruit a large part of Tennessee (from around Jackson over to Cookeville iirc) and he's said it several times.....there are just exponentially more Division 1 prospects now than ever before in the state of Tennessee.

That has a lot to do with it.

I'm saying there has been good talent in the state for years

But the football "process " has improved over the past 10 years. Camps... out of state games. Kids are developing better in Tennessee than opposed to 10 years ago.

Coaching scene is better as well.
A lot of factors.

But again... 14 starters on this super hyped team 120 are from the Volunteer State. Butch is doing a fine job in- state.

The Memphis area has too much Ole Miss influence for us to expect to consistently mop up all highly touted recruits out of that area.

But we have to get out in front of the population boom around the Nashville area.

This is something we couldn't depend on in the Fulmer era, as a poster astutely pointed out above.

What Butch has done, wisely, is concentrated on areas like Charlotte, Hampton Roads in VA, and continued to build strong relationships in the mid-state area, because the Dawgs are gonna gain momentum in Atlanta in certain years.

They've got a new coach, a successful coordinator from a great program, and the excitement down there has peaked. I'm not worried about losing Georgia kids like Gibbs and Holloman to them.

Kills me to see such whinging in August about recruiting. When Trey commits we'll be 8th or so, and after we have the great season we're gonna have it's not inconceivable that we'll be top 4 or 5.

Seen him play last year and the dude is a stud hands down. He will be a lot better when he gets in a college s&c program though

Interesting.

I suspect that is because Fant missed his jr season due to injury, and really didn't have a lot of stats from his soph season.

Not taking anything away from Payton, but I think Fant is a physical specimen and has a tremendous mindset. If he is full recovered this young man has tremendous potential.

Yeah, Butch has a recruiting map that is bearing fruit.

Mid- State
Atlanta
Charlotte
South Fla
Tidewater VA
Southern VA
Cincinnati

Fulmer grabbed his fair share out of the mid- state. Fulmer just let the times pass him by. State talent had been enough for him to win 2 SEC titles and National Title.

Talent has always been good in TN, but now its more abundant. Population boom.

Scored his team's only TD- a 61 yards td run- in a 9-7 loss to Pearl-Cohn.

Had over 100 All Purpose yards.

Next week Hillsboro takes Murfeesboro Oakland on ESPNU.

Hillsboro other QB threw 3 ints.

Kid is a much better athlete than Fant. I promise I'll find the camp highlights via twitter, Rivals, or youtube. Javonta has some of the quickest feet i have seen, and has amazing wiggle in open field. Last night against Pearl Cohn he went to qb ran the option and went like 60 yds or so on a keeper. Before someone ask he's not NPA. Spoke with his coach and he said he is on pace as of early summer to get his academic questions straightened out. This could be a big issue on the slow recruitment too.

I've been keeping up with him. Payton is a playmaker.

Hes better than 2 wrs we already have committed.

Yeah it seems like kids qualifying is an issue for students from Hillsboro. That little school is pumping out some talent tho.

I wouldn't mind Stripling getting to coach Ben Hutch.

Old habits in the classroom but I'm hearing he has been working hard to fix these issues per Coach Lopez

Just consider that the Tennessee state average ACT score is 19.7. A perfect score is a 36. If indeed he made a 27 then he sure knows a lot of math and science to be a bad student?

I be inclined to think the 27 is inaccurate if he has grade troubles. Guess its possible, but highly unlikely.

This kid is very intelligent but just failed to take things serious once he got to hs. Now that teain of thought has him diging out of a hole.
