Julian Phillips Auburn rumors

I’ve thought all along Phillips would most likely transfer or maybe jump in the draft. That said, I find you guys giving up on him after one season to be utterly foolish considering Phillips talent. I hope he stays, gets stronger, and works hard on the weakest parts of his game.

Well, transferring out isn’t really going to help him considering he got plenty of minutes here

Maybe I’m crazy, but I just don’t really understand at all why Julian Phillips would transfer to Auburn. It’s not like he’s tailor made for success in Bruce’s offense anymore than he is in ours. The only real connection is that they came runner up in his original recruitment. If he’s going to come back to school and transfer, I just really do not get the appeal for him to head to the plains. Maybe I’m missing something here, but it would not be some great marriage of skills and system imo.

I don’t think there is any real smoke there. The only Julian to Auburn connections I’ve seen are desperate Auburn fans trying to will it into existence because they have had a terrible off-season. No one credible has reported it. Just Auburn fans and desperate trolls trying to stir the pot on this board.

Yeah I know there’s been no real smoke. It’s just so weird to me that people make the connection. Auburn fans are probably the most delusional bunch I’ve ever been around when it comes to basketball (wild thing to say after living in Alabama my whole life and attending UA) so it shouldn’t surprise me. It’s still just odd because neither party really matches well with each other on the court.

That’s not at all what I’m saying. I’m not saying he isn’t a good player. I’m saying if social media and basketball writers are hyping up some mystery, massive portal player that is about to announce he is transferring, even though Julian is a great prospect, do you really think he is worthy of being considered under the status of “huge name entering the portal, everyone stand by?”

Yohan Traore is another former 5-star prospect that got little fanfare across social media when he entered the portal. When I think of huge portal entries, it’s proven college players with major track records of production at the college level. I just don’t think Phillips is in that category right now.
Yohan Traore also averaged 2 and 1 in just under 10 mpg. Phillips averaged 4x those numbers, was one of the best defensive freshmen in the country, and is potentially a borderline 1st rd pick. Thinking he and Traore would deserve similar attention in the portal is disingenuous.

I guess we'll agree to disagree, but I think a player of Phillips's caliber and potential pulling out of the draft and entering the transfer portal, especially this late when most of the bigger names have signed, would qualify as pretty big news.

Well, that’s ridiculous. Transferring could certainly help him if he’s not happy, wants to play in another system, or some other reason that’s important to him.

Ask BHH and see how well that worked out for him

Again, I think you believe I’m saying Phillips isn’t a good player or not someone I’d want. I’m not saying that. I have been saying for weeks that I want him to return to Tennessee. I’m just saying I don’t believe many people outside of our Tennessee bubble would feel the need to hype up him entering the portal. Those tweets make it feel like it’s a name closer to Hunter Dickinson or Oscar Tshiebwe status not Julian Phillips. That’s all.

No, I hear what you're saying. I just disagree. I think the rest of the country likely appreciates his potential more than Tennessee fans who are disappointed that he didn't immediately play like a lottery pick.

Maybe, but BHH jumped and wasn't pushed.
True, but it's the same with Phillips. We just couldn't sit around waiting while he tested the NBA waters. There's a difference in pushing him out and us pushing on with building next years roster. If he wanted a spot here, he'd have had one, but it's clear his eye is on the league. No problem with that, but there's also no problem with us moving on either.

This is spot on IMO and shows why the NCAA needs to adjust the portal window till after the NBA draft.

The spring portal window should open on the same day as the NBA Draft deadline for underclassmen to pull out of the draft (May 31st, this year), and it should only be a week long to put your name into the portal. That puts everyone on an even playing field. At that point, you've finished out the spring semester, and even a May mini-term, and you've had roughly 7-9 weeks since the end of your season to decide if you want to enter the portal...plenty of time. Players entering the portal can then enroll at any school of their choice up until the last day of drop/adds in the fall semester. This allows schools hampered by the NBA Draft process to equally compete with everyone for all available players and know exactly how many spots they'll have to fill.

This would make too much sense. So, the NCAA will never do it.

Maybe, but we know keeping JP means pushing someone else out. My thought is he's going pro, but it puts Barnes in a bind if he chooses not to.

Barnes probably is aware of Phillips’ plans. I’d like for him to return as I think he is our most athletic player who lacked confidence this season

Thats kinda who I assumed he was referring to, but since BHH wasn't pushed anywhere, I had to ask.
I was commenting on that no matter how BHH or JP is treated or how they themselves think they are treated, that isn’t going to stop us from getting top recruits. Especially now since the game has significantly changed with NIL.

Some common sense in the recruiting calendar is needed in all sports. The way things are set up now makes it difficult on player and programs alike.
