If a player leaves to Auburn I can see it more with BJ Edwards. The kid grew up watching Pearl coach. He can go to Auburn and get minutes, not so much staying here

It’s one thing to lose BHH to OOC Louisville and an entirely other to lose JP to Auburn and Bruce Pearl. Of course the NIL and free transfer rules have changed the game dramatically. An issue is that Barnes hasn’t adjusted to the new rules. Also, Barnes really hasn’t converted with the 5* recruits he has landed and this defection will most certainly be used as fodder for negative recruiting against UT as yet further evidence that he cannot produce a T10 pick.
Bwaa-ha-ha, wasn't Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge, both the 2nd pick in the draft ? TJ Ford was 8th and Tristain Thompson was 4th. There are a couple more I'm leaving out. But yes, he's only had 3 first rounders from Tennessee and none were top 10. But, that still makes you uninformed and that's me being nice

BJ would have been like 8 years old when Pearl was fired
Yeah he might’ve been a little too young to remember Pearl but probably not his family. I don’t know the situation at TN, but BJE had a chance to play more minutes this year and it didn’t happen. With all the new players coming in, I doubt he’d get any significant minutes. If I was him, if Bruce called I’d take my shot there

Potentially tampering with Phillips is something I could certainly see Pearl doing, but I highly doubt Pearl is going to want a kid who barely played for us this season. If BJE were to leave, he would likely end up at a mid major program or a P6 program that is rebuilding.

What makes you think he could get significant minutes at another top tier SEC program if he can’t earn much of anything at UT?

I really don't like saying this. But the system Pearl runs would probably be a better fit for him. He looked like a square peg in round hole most of the season.
I said @ Nov/Dec that I really hoped CRB brings him along thru the season to a point where he can let him loose to make a run at a title. The injury didn't help, but just the opposite happened as the year wore on. We needed a dynamic playmaker to get us out of system scores. Was hoping for a Carmelo Anthony style run, but it didn't happen at all.

How? What system? The Wendell Green jack up 30 3’s system? Such a great fit and way better than what we do. Phillips problem isn’t the system.

I ain't saying he has no problems. I'm referring to Pearl's more wide open system and coaching style that lets the horses run more free. Not saying it's a better system. But it is different.

Well, we are a top tier SEC program right now. I'm sure USC, UM, OU, or UGA would love to get their hands on him.

Bruce Pearl can suck it. I don't believe this rumor, but if it comes true, JP can suck it, too. You either bleed orange or you don't.

The last three 5* stars that Barnes signed includes two one-and-done 1st round NBA draft picks, and a 5’11” one-and-done 2nd round NBA draft pick.
Pretty sure all three of these 5*s and their families would judge that Barnes successfully “converted” their careers. I know one of the player’s parents is very complimentary of Barnes.
If Phillips leaves, whether to draft or portal, I think it will hurt us next year. But it’s way over the top to say the “wheels are in danger of coming off” the program at this point. That’s Chicken Little talk.

I didn’t say he would get more minutes at another program but he probably knows how his future looks like at TN. Justin Powell came from Auburn to TN and then to Washington St. Kids will keep going to school to school till they fit/get minutes. If Phillips leaves, it would be to NBA. He’s already locked in as a starter next year. Why would he leave that?
