Julian Phillips drafted at 35

Delusional. I'm going to go play in the NBA without a developed skill set just because my athletic ability has gotten me this far. I hope the best for the young man. It's my wish that he succeeds, but like Kennedy Chandler, he is not remotely ready. Hopefully he gets Chandler's ridiculous rookie contract of 4 yrs 7.1m; 4.93m of which was guaranteed. 45% tax bracket. So about 2.5m in actual take home money. Chandler looked bad in the G League footage I saw him play. Let's hope he turns it around.

Good for Phillips.

Dang Arkansas had 4 picks in the top 38. But you didn't see it translate into much success as a team last season.
You don't win with freshman in college basketball these days. Too many 21-23 year olds with more strength and skill drown them out.

Not all the money is taxed at that rate, so he should have kept over 3 million. Not bad.

Please don’t use your math and logic skills for anything important like determining how long a cat can live in the oven at 400F.

This is EXACTLY why the NBA is virtually unwatchable now. The 3pt line has RUINED the pro game. There is little to ZERO paint game any longer and players like G. Williams are barely hanging on. It's either a 3pt shot or a dunk. Boring.

There is no such thing as a 45% tax bracket

Also, the tax rate is marginal and he isn’t paid as a lump sum. So his take home would be a good bit higher than you’ve posited here.

Congratulations to Phillips on getting drafted! That is a dream that doesn’t come true for just anyone.

Good point on taxes, but you do need to factor in state income tax. I live in KY and I have 5% income tax here, BUT I’m able to exclude days I work outside or KY.
I once worked with a former NFL player who was hit with taxes from other states when the played away games so he ended up having to file income tax in several states. Basically that’s a racket if you ask me.

But that effective rate starts getting a lot closer to the marginal rate as incomes start hitting 7 figures.

I’d reckon that the Illinois real estate tax is pretty oppressive for the high end fellers as well (but deductible on the federal return - unless they rent).

No need to ask. It is a racket.

Understood. He almost certainly lives in Memphis and has no state income tax for 50% of his games minimum. Plus the other states that don’t have them.

This is a huge blow to all the knuckleheads wanting a reason to get rid of Barnes. Soon enough TN will be playing the lets hire a bum while the UT base dreams of the next coach. Nothing like an offseason of propping up a flawed coach to replace the HOF'er we already have. Phillips going to the NBA was a no brainer

I’m only just now realizing he was analyzing how much JP would make IF he was paid the same contract as KC in Illinois. That’s why I omitted state tax. Whoops.

And to your second point, Pro athletes should almost always rent. Likelihood you get moved too high.

Well he is very athletic. But so is Keon Johnson who played here and he has yet to do much in the NBA.

I can see JP with a more clear path to being a solid 3&D wing. I always envisioned Keon being a more on-ball player in the league but so far that doesn't seem to be coming together.

Not really. The problem with the NBA is the entire regular season is just to prepare for the playoffs. Too many rest days and the organization has determined that it’s ok to lose regular season games. I used to think the same thing comparing the 80’s vs todays game but watching the past few years I see todays players are so much better as a whole. Some of the shots look sloppy at times but it’s because there are no open jump shots anymore. You Have to be able to step back and pull the trigger with someone all over you.
