Julian Phillips drafted at 35

Good for Phillips.

Dang Arkansas had 4 picks in the top 38. But you didn't see it translate into much success as a team last season.

Arkansas was talented and had some impressive wins. But NBA teams draft a lot of guys purely on their athleticism and potential, sticks them in the G league and hopes/sees if they develop. Some do, a lot don't. You'd think that NBA teams, with only a 2-round-draft, would draft only guys who have, you know, genuine basketball skills to go with their athleticism--but they often don't. It's wacky--but then NBA rosters and rotations are small, so I guess they think they can go long with some of these prospects. That said, the whole 1-and-Done thing has become stupid and annoying.

These 5-stars who have decided before they get to campus, in many cases, that they're only going to play one year rarely help their college teams. A few do, there are some exceptions---but most are raw and lack polish: see Phillips. You, the coach, spend a year working with them and then they bolt. Look at Cal at Kentucky: Think of ALL the 5-stars he's landed over a 20-year period, all the 1-and-Dones, and he brings in multiple 5 stars every year. He's got one measly national title. I don't know how he stands it. We think the 5 stars are a great thing and help him--but they play a year and then leave--so the team never benefits from their growth, maturity and development, because they don't stick around. As a result, he's has to pretty much start over, rehash the same basic fundamentals, with a new crop of 5 stars every year. The team never develops because the top talent doesn't stick around long enough to develop and mature. It's crazy and pretty stupid, really--but in keeping with the off-putting commercialism of major-college sports. Further, are Kentucky boosters putting up big NIL money to help Cal land these 5 stars? Why? It's a waste of money--stupid.

This is EXACTLY why the NBA is virtually unwatchable now. The 3pt line has RUINED the pro game. There is little to ZERO paint game any longer and players like G. Williams are barely hanging on. It's either a 3pt shot or a dunk. Boring.

You're basically right--I too find the NBA game boring for much the same reasons. Look at Williams: He HAD to become a 3-point shooter to stay in the league--and to his great credit, he did. He shoots right at 40 percent from the 3-line. There is a lot of talk that the Celtics might let him go now, or sign and trade him, after getting Porzingis, but there are said to be at least 3/4 teams interested in Williams if Boston doesn't sign him to an extension.

College teams now emulate NBA offenses, alas: 3 or 4 guys who stand around the 3-line perimeter, waiting to get a kick-out pass so they can shoot the 3.

yes and those are not ready either but good luck to them. Black is the only one close but he can not shoot but 6 7 is his catch and defense.

You must not watch games with Jokic, Embid, Antekoumpo, etc

He was drafted based on potential and athleticism, he was in no way ready for the NBA. His handles were below average, his 3pt shooting was below average. He will get excellent training to develop further and could be a decent NBA player, but he needs to work ethic.

Don’t blame him for taking the money. He could have stayed another year and maybe increased his draft position. But that is a gamble.

I know some are big NBA fans but I'd have to agree with you. I am an avid sports fan (and consider myself to be fairly ept at understanding most games) but I haven't been able to watch more than a quarter of NBA ball for some time. TO ME...it is incredibly boring and simply unorganized chaos. Again...TO ME... that's what it appears. For years I had a close friend whose best friend was a former NBA player and did radio nightly for an NBA team. Can't tell you the times he called with tickets (good seats too) and I just had to be honest and encourage him to invite someone else. I simply had so many other things I KNEW I would enjoy more. Again...THAT'S JUST ME!

And I’m the exact opposite.

I LOVE Tennessee basketball more than anything. But I absolutely can’t watch any non-tournament college game. They are miserable imo.

Whereas the NBA, I can just about casually watch any game/team and enjoy it.

Good point on taxes, but you do need to factor in state income tax. I live in KY and I have 5% income tax here, BUT I’m able to exclude days I work outside or KY.
I once worked with a former NFL player who was hit with taxes from other states when the played away games so he ended up having to file income tax in several states. Basically that’s a racket if you ask me.
Do Jets and Giants have to pay NY tax as well? I was thinking they might have offices in NY even though they play in NJ.

The Bulls have a good Coach, so perhaps Phillips will develop into a solid player. In fact, if Billy Donovan ever decided to get back into coaching in the college ranks he would be a great replacement for Barnes down the Pike.

Was it just me or did 75% of the draftees last night look like they need to eat some taters and biscuits and gravy? Every one that I saw looked like they are on a starvation diet. I guess the NBA isn’t looking for bruisers anymore.

Delusional. I'm going to go play in the NBA without a developed skill set just because my athletic ability has gotten me this far. I hope the best for the young man. It's my wish that he succeeds, but like Kennedy Chandler, he is not remotely ready. Hopefully he gets Chandler's ridiculous rookie contract of 4 yrs 7.1m; 4.93m of which was guaranteed. 45% tax bracket. So about 2.5m in actual take home money. Chandler looked bad in the G League footage I saw him play. Let's hope he turns it around.
The tax bracket you’re in doesn’t apply to your entire salary. It only applies to the amount you make above whatever threshold for the bracket each year. With a salary that high, it doesn’t make as big a difference so your number is probably pretty close. Just a PSA about how taxes work since I’ve seen a lot of people get confused about that.

Also, most NBA players are probably single. So that effective tax rate approaches their marginal rate even faster than for the marrieds.

I don’t know about “most players” but almost definitely “most rookies” and certainly both KC and JP.

Maybe instead a lot of Head of Household filing statuses rather than single, but the liability seems to be almost the same for those two when there’s a 7 figure income. But no matter what, government gonna take a big chunk out of those rookie paychecks.

As far as “most”, if only looking at long careers it most likely starts to even out. But most rookies and short timers probably aren’t married.

Tennessee player gets drafted and half the people in here are mad about it. Perhaps because you spent the last 3 months saying he was a bad player that we could easily replace in the portal.
He was never a “bad player”. Has plenty of potential. Just didn’t adjust and develop as fast as everyone thought he should. Now he’ll develop in the G league and we’ll see if he can eventually cut it in the big league. If he had lived up to that potential, we’d have only had him for a year anyway so it really doesn’t matter either way.

Shocking that they aren’t all like Bernard King (the GOAT) scoring his career high in his first game. 43 IIRC. Maybe it was 42. And without a shot clock or 3-point line.

Actually, its the spacing on the floor because of lots of pick and roll offenses make it almost impossible to guard players like Steph Curry..

It’s a lot of 19 year olds that haven’t filled into their bodies yet. So I feel like it’s usually that way.

Also, I think sports science is shifting towards players being leaner to save their knees.

You don't win with freshman in college basketball these days. Too many 21-23 year olds with more strength and skill drown them out.
So they jump to the NBA and compete in G League where they can compete against other physically yet-to-mature bodies.

What I don't know is... whether my statement above is satirical, cynical, or serious?
