Julian Phillips Hypothetical

If only the people who shot well enough to "deserve to shoot" took shots, we'd score 0 points. It's not about earning the privilege of shooting the ball, it's about doing your job in the offense, and for both of his attempts he was doing exactly that. He doesn't take those shots and we end up with a lower quality shot deeper in the shot clock, like those hot potatoes Key kept passing to Véscovi at the end of the shot clock.

He is on the very far end of the spectrum. You don’t want a guy that has managed all of 2 made shots in 2 tournament games(and those were dunks), taking that shot. He is literally the least confident shooter on the team.

It is about earning it. His role does not involve taking that shot. His role is rebounding, defense, and points in the paint. There is a season’s worth of data to prove that. It was dumb and it was never going in.

You absolutely want him to take the shot, it's the whole reason he runs to that spot in the offense. Otherwise you have 2 players who don't shoot on the offense, further clogging the lane. That he and everybody else couldn't shoot is why things never opened up for Nkamhoua, because he needed space in the middle and it never cleared. We weren't going to pound our way through that, we had to shoot over it, which we just can't do.

You don’t. His confidence is blown and the numbers say he doesn’t need to be taking it. And voila, what do you know, it didn’t go in and was never going to.

So what's your solution? His numbers aren't any worse than anyone else outside. Does everybody take lower quality shots that they have earned?

Huh? Yes his numbers literally are worse.

Guess how many jump shots he made in THREE NCAA tourney games. You can do it, come on. Get it right.

Terribly overrated. Who could possibly say he was a five star? His Dad, maybe?

I think he has potential but his confidence is at rock bottom. But yea, not a five star. He should have had explicit instructions to not yank up a 3. His role was defense, rebound, drive to the basket for contact.

He has a lot of potential but must get stronger. He weights about 190 now after the season [guess]. Players usually lose some weight during the season because they do not left weights as much. He needs to weight at least 215 before the start of next season. the scout on him this years was to attack him when he drives, he will either lose the ball or lose his balance and not be able to score because of his lack of strength. I think if he stays another year, he will be a very good player and an early 1st round pick.

I noticed him get lost in coverage at least twice defensively. With his man shooting wide open shots, one being a 3. One time he ran into JJJ. The kid is talented no doubt.

Phillips may be the first player Barnes has had at Tennessee that should be negatively used against him by other coaches in recruiting. The fact that Phillips has not been utilized at all is coaching malpractice.
I don’t want say bad things about Phillips but he was not a 5 star player. He can barely dribble under pressure. Watch when ge gets the ball in FAU game. He has a decent shot but very little ability to create his own shot. He plays average at best defense and is not aggressive on either end of the court. I have not watched his high school highlights so someone can tell me about his scoring ability in high school.
