Julian Phillips in the transfer portal

Are you trying to prove my point? Kennedy was exactly the type of point guard this offense needs. Springer and Johnson both were inconsistent, but their strengths aligned with what Barnes wanted better than Phillips.. Barnes needs to stop targeting super athletic wings who want to face up and iso. He keeps recruiting them and they never pan out because thats not what he wants at that position.
I think you are 50/50 here. Zz,chandler,j bone (kinda) are the pgs we need absolutely. Where I think you are wrong is recruiting wings. If we have a pg that can press the ball and attack the hole then iso wings are fine as long as they can play in transition.

Auburn fans are desperate for him to come there on social media yet not a single one of them realizes we would have to approve an inter-conference transfer since Phillips missed the May 1 deadline. Oh, man, how awesome it’s going to be when they get their spirits broken yet again. Phillips will never play for Auburn.

Will be shocked if he ever plays for Auburn. Their fans can get their hopes up but the chance of it actually happening are slim to none.

I’d never forgive Barnes if he signed a waiver for him to play in the SEC. Would be a borderline fireable offense to sign off on him playing for Bruce.

Let him go then Tennessee smokes their ass in game this coming year. Auburn has nothing but a good PG coming in and cry baby Keldon Johnson back they will suck anyway

If Phillips wanted to go to Auburn or any other SEC school that badly he had more than enough time to ensure he was able to do so. Don’t blame Barnes or TN for not allowing it now. The kid had time.

He was just starting to blossom—into a wallflower. He just seemed detached and disinterested late in the season. If he transfers, maybe he’ll inherit a softer schedule that will fit his game more.

The portal did away with release restrictions. We have no say in where he can or can’t go
Pretty sure he missed the deadline to move within the conference without a waiver so I think we do have some say.

Phillips had nothing to lose by entering the portal, not saying he doesn’t ultimately transfer but this gives him all possible options on the table considering the deadline was tomorrow.

Yep, if he knows he’s not coming back here (we have no spots), then you’d be surprised if he didn’t enter the portal before the deadline if not just to keep options open depending on draft result.

There are plenty of good basketball teams outside of the SEC

Anyone who has ever worked with an instructor to get his golf swing fixed knows how you go through a period where your swing gets worse, and your whole game falls apart. At some point you'll be convinced you're wasting your time and your money.

Phillips played like a great, young athlete with a head full of new-but-not-yet-absorbed knowledge in his head. In the process of trying to learn the new things the coaches were teaching, and stepping up in competition without the benefit of a corresponding step up in his physical body, it's predictable that a 5-star would get discouraged.

It's probably a place his head has never been before.

We've heard many stories of athletes who got discouraged and wanted to go home, but a strong parent kept him here and wouldn't let him walk away defeated.

But what happens if there are dissenting voices coming from family? I have no idea if any of this is the case here...

but all this is far more logical than assuming that Phillips is not a very good basketball player, or that Barnes destroys offensive skillsets, while being unable to coach certain positions. Every person and every situation is unique.

Drew Pember has been balling out at UNC Ashville averaging 20.9 a game... Seems the type we would go after in the portal🤔

He wasn't going to reach it here. Barnes didn't know how to use him.

Huntley-Hatfield or his five-star hangers-on probably said the same thing. They're five-star babies who want to blame the coach or program for their poor first-year performances. Transferring is just their way of evading accountability. Babies.

I don’t think this is a surprise as folks around him could tell the young man wasn’t happy. Idk if Barnes being hard on him or the offensive schemes played a role but he wasn’t happy.

He always seemed to press a bit which led to turnovers. He still may go to the NBA if he thinks he is a top 2nd round pick. Personally I think he needs another yr in college in a system that enables him to play more one on one.

He can’t play One and One if the other guy is 2x stronger than him.

He gets knocked off the dribble.

Don’t blame his inability to play up to. SEC standards as a Freshman on Barns. While a good athlete, he is the one who could not put the ball on the floor and get a shot off. His ability to dribble the basketball was way below standard. He was a good defender, rebounder, and free throw shooter, it ales more than that to become a star in college basketball and the NBA. Maybe hie will mature and become a great player somewhere.

Agree. Barnes gave him every opportunity and JP struggled to dribble drive as he frequently turned it over. He showed flashes of athleticism so maybe he pressed a bit or afraid to make a mistake. Either way, him leaving may be the best thing for him. I hope he finds success and happiness.
