Julian Phillips in the transfer portal

I’m not sure he’d be academically eligible to even transfer, didn’t he leave school over a month ago?

Auburn fans are desperate for him to come there on social media yet not a single one of them realizes we would have to approve an inter-conference transfer since Phillips missed the May 1 deadline. Oh, man, how awesome it’s going to be when they get their spirits broken yet again. Phillips will never play for Auburn.

It wouldn’t surprise me if Barnes approved the transfer. Of course the AD could always step in and not approve, stating it will set a precedent for those entering the portal beyond the deadline.

I'm not sure that it matters that he's entered the transfer portal. He can, and possibly will just go to the NBA. I assume the portal is a backup option. We already filled his spot anyway.

Why do our fans automatically think that every time a player transfers its because they can't play? He was a 5 star for a reason. His style doesn't fit what Barnes wants in his offense, and his strengths don't align with Barnes needs at his position. I'm not sure why Barnes even recruited him. He has a long line of super athletic wings who don't pan out, but he keeps going after them.
Lots of guys who are “5 stars” don’t turn out to be true 5 stars.

Anyone that thinks Phillips is a good basketball player is delusional. Great defender but in this day and age you need to be able to play offense and he is inept at it.

5 star rankings are handed out way too liberally in the recruiting industry, especially in basketball. Common fans, understandably, interpret a 5 star rating to mean that a kid is going to come in and be a stud as a freshman. Without doing the research to confirm, there are probably 10-15 players in most classes that fit that billing, yet there has been an average of 28 5 star recruits in the last three classes. The recruiting industries and casual fans are on completely different pages when it comes to 5 star ratings.

This one just feels like it’s going to haunt us. None of the past transfers made me think that.

Don’t know why. I have my doubts he will be in college next year. We just added 2 top 60 freshmen (1 who got a semester head start with the team) and at least 2 transfers with a bunch of experience. We will be fine.

My understanding is that the situation is similar to BHH. His parents wanted more guaranteed playing time…

He played 24 minutes a game. That's more minutes than he probably deserved. It's often the money-hungry family and related hangers-on who are convinced that their kid will be a one-and-done and then a first-round NBA pick. When that doesn't happen, they look for someone to blame--and it's never the young player. It's the unappealing, spoiled 5-star mentality.

Maybe he can get a ice skating offer from a Northern college. Because he looked like he was on skates when he dribbled into the lane
