Juneteenth

Making Juneteenth a holiday is the right thing. Doing it to score political points is the wrong reason.

Would you honestly expect this holiday to get pushed through if the GOP was in charge of one of the houses or presidency? Be honest.

I honestly don't know, but I would hope so. I would hope enough people could see it's deserving of being celebrated. But I don't trust politics, on either side, so I can't say with any certainty.

114 shell casings and no casualties. I'm guessing those involved look something like this:

Who’s got the resources to unload 114 rounds? I let a deer walk because I didn’t think it was worth one round.

I mean, it hasn't happened yet so that should be a bit of a giveaway.

It didn't happen under previous Democratic administrations either. Obama was there for 8 years. So why is now suddenly different?

Like I said, I don't trust politics. I think it was done now for political reasons. Maybe that doesn't matter in the long run. It deserves to be a holiday.

Given the affirmative GOP participation in the Senate and House votes, I’d say yes.

Moment woman, 19, who shot at officer from her car during Juneteenth parade is killed when he returns fire, leaving the cop sobbing on the floor afterwards

A 19-year-old Michigan woman died after allegedly opening fire on a police officer who was controlling traffic near a weekend Juneteenth parade in Flint, authorities said.

Police say Briana Sykes, 19, of Flint, fired the first shots from her car before the officer returned fire, striking the teen, who died as a result of her injuries.

Cell phone video of the confrontation posted online shows the officer slumping to the floor after the shooting and appearing to cry as he is attended to by colleagues

The officer, who has been placed on paid leave, needed to be comforted after the shooting

So we're cool with summing up millions of people observing a holiday with one negative video?
I am cool with summing up one negative video.

Especially considering there have been tweets posted by community leaders calling for it to be a day of peace. Were they racist to make that plea?

Or were they trying to avoid the stereotype that was supported with video evidence?

He wasn't summing up one video, the language he used implied he was talking about the entirety of the celebration.

This is not comparable to saying "Juneteenth is nothing more than another 'Lootin’ and Shootin’' day." You can't be serious with this?

What else were they calling peace for?

It's not racist to say a community has problems with X if indeed that community does have that problem.

I would say the comments on chicken wings was much more racist than looting and shooting. That's an assumption based on race not backed by any facts, or highlighted as an issue by the community.

If Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the US and is now a federal holiday what does MLK Day celebrate?
