Just wasting time/doing math...

Right now, we sit with the #9 class on Rivals, with 2223 points.
However, let's look at some possibilities with 4 spots left... (keep in mind, other schools will add to their classes, most likely. Georgia only has 19 as of right now. We have 23 commits, but two haven't signed, so we have 4 spots left, I believe).

If we add Darnell Washington and no one else, our class will jump to 2,436 points, which would be good for 7th, and we would jump Florida, making us 5th in the SEC.

If we add Darnell Washington AND Jay Hardy, our class will jump to 2,594 points, which would be good for 5th place, and we would jump Georgia, making us 3rd in the SEC.

If we were to somehow add Darnell Washington, Jay Hardy, Demon Clowney (though I don't think we are going for him honestly)....our class would jump to 2,751 points, still 5th place, and still 3rd in the SEC.

If we were to somehow add Darnell Washington, Jay Hardy, Demon Clowney, Dee Beckwith, our class would jump to 2,841 points, which would be good for #4 class nationally, and 2nd in the SEC.

Also in the realm of possibility (though not really): Sign Washington, Hardy, Chris Morris (who didn't sign yesterday) AND Antonio Johnson (who also didn't sign yesterday and was once committed to us). That would be good for 2,952 points, and good for second in the nation.

Ger-Cari Caldwell would not factor in, since he is a two star, nor would Miller or Williamson if they end up signing. Only the top 20 prospects get included in class's ranking.

Again, I don't think that this all will happen. But it does go to show what we could have, and how close this class is to being in the top 5 as of now. Great job by Pruitt this time around. Hope you enjoy, just got bored today.
Thanks for the effort. Some of these guys will give you the business but I'm glad you're excited about the class.

Have you thought about the impact if the players they add are 3* but rated higher by the recruiting sites than some of the signed 3*? Say a 5.7 Rivals rather than a 5.6? I read that 247 tries to give each player a numerical grade that essentially ranks each kid compared to all the others.

FWIW, The OL signees appear to be "hurting" the class ranking. OL is a very difficult position to project. I think that is why they award disproportionately fewer 4/5* grades to OL's. This year there are 49 over 5 positions with 5 on the field on almost every down. There are 32 4/5* RB's with usually one on the field at a time.... 28 QB's.... There are 70 TE's/WR's that have 4/5* grades. Only occasionally are there 5 of those on the field at once.

I guess I'm saying there is no position where we have to depend more on what the coaches see than OL.

Yes, but the key is that only the top 20 players are counted. So it doesnt matter if the player is bumped up, if they're still not the top 20 players in the class. A lot of our 3 stars arent even counted in the rankings.

I tried to pay attention to where a person would count and matter. Basically if they arent a 4* at this point, they dont change anything.

In my view, the class that is overrated is UGA. If you look at them objectively, they have no great options at QB moving forward unless Beck is somehow ready to step in and play early (indications are that he is not). Their best options at RB are a kid (White) with two bad knees that can't cut and hasn't regained his burst and another kid (Cook) who is "troubled" to say the least. They signed a big kid out of Cal who could help but is untested against SEC competition. I don't see them improving their ability to score points. Their fan base is rightfully unhappy with the state of the Offensive Coaching Staff. Despite our ranking compared to theirs, in my opinion we have taken big strides toward closing the gap.
Seems like UGA's class hit their needs imo. WR was their biggest need and they got 3 of the top 15 WR's. Swift and Herrien are gone and they got the #6 RB who is ranked 37th overall. They're set to lose 2 OL and have a 5* committed (not signed, flip risk to AU) and 4* committed (not signed, flip risk to LSU), and 2 4* signed. I agree Beck isn't ready, but that's irrelevant if Fromm returns, plus there are multiple options in the portal. Also, objectively all recruits are untested against SEC competition. Can't knock some for that and not others.

Isn't Washington headed to Bama?

well, as far as we know he hasn't said anything about where he's going, and he hasn't signed anywhere yet, but of course don't you think he could fit in an Orange and White uni...the staff thinks so...:D

GO BIG ORANGE!

Agreed. If Washington ends up anywhere other than UT or UGA it'll be a surprise. Might start seeing more activity in the portal now that teams will know what they missed on. KJ Costello is leaving Stanford, Justin Shorter is a 5* WR leaving PSU who is currently a frosh, and then there's King who is rumored to OU/LSU.

Don't forget about Tate Ratledge.

Thanks for taking the time to figure all that out. Very good information.

I just went with the 247 composite. Tate and Lindberg were the 4*'s I was referring to. Seems like the most fair way and quicker than going back and forth to find out which one has them rated higher. I think UGA's class is better over all or at least higher rated, but I also think UT addressed their needs and was more impressive given the season UT had. If Pruitt is near the top 10 with 7 wins have to imagine a big jump at 10 wins.

I guess I was just thinking what the impact could be if four 3* signees were bumped out of the calculation by four more highly ranked 3*. Would that move the needle?

Georgia has a lot of spots left. We could move up a few spots but it's unlikely that we end up in the top five. Probably looking at a 7th to 12th class which is fine. All those teams are very close in terms of talent.

That's the thing, we don't know how many spots each team has. Texas A&M has 22 commits, with 5 unsigned and they are rated at 6th with 2531 points on Rivals. If they can sign 8 more, they may jump to 1st or 2nd also. I wish they could list how many spots each team has available.

Points include all commits. So they're unsigned guys are being included too.

Florida I believe is taking more than 25 this year.

I would rather evaluate the class from two years ago. Who panned out and who hasn't yet? I get that ranking systems have their value, but if Bailey for example drops 35 spots does that make him any less talented?
Rankings lag what has actually happened. But it would mean new information says he will be less successful in college and into the draft.

The correlations here are pretty strong, but far far from perfect in dealing with human beings, development, personalities, etc. But I liken it to the NFL draft. Experts spend millions trying to figure out the draft...and they are evaluating some 500 prospects seriously. Not tens of thousands. And they are still terrible at it.

It's just the nature of evaluating humans in athletic environments. Hit rates would be embarrassingly low for many industries. But it is all relative.
