It's just my observation from seeing the guy around campus and at parties. Everybody is entitled to their opinion of someone.

Good thing you weren't around campus when the old school players of the late 80s and early 90s were there. They would've smashed your face in and then took your liquor. There were some mean SOBs on the team in those days.. Nobody seemed to whine about it then, but there was no internet or twitter to squeak your trouble to the world on.

Bunch of Midfielders up in this thread salty that Hurd is going to their parties and getting more attention than them. JMO

In that guy's defense, he did point out that Bray was shady, and that turned out to be true. Now, Hurd is young and will most likely do stupid things that young people do, so hopefully he doesn't have character issues that are detrimental to him or the team.

In all fairness, it didn't sound like actual character issues as described to me - just a pretty advanced case of 5star-itis (hearsay disclaimer, but supposedly the words "don't you know who I am, I'm a 5-star recruit" were literally told to a young lady who asked what his name was). Very similar to what AJ McCarron was describing amongst Bama's younger players...that they had been so fluffed up and hyped by the recruiting services that they had forgotten that the game is played between the white lines, not on the Internet. I seem to recall thinking I was pretty hot sheeit as a freshman myself so I don't think this is something that's unique to him by any means. In any case, it usually fixes itself with time and a healthy dose of reality. Mine was pledging a fraternity. Jalen's will be running away from impossibly large and fast men who want to decapitate him on the football field.

Again, just repeating what I've been told. Don't shoot the messenger. Go Vols.

I have no idea whether or not Hurd steals or thinks that he is above the law at U.T., but fans who overlook character flaws because the person plays football are enablers in my mind.

This is my thing. Everyone should treat these guys just like any other person. Special treatment does nothing but hurt.

If you have legitimate information that ANY player is acting inappropriately or illegally, you need to contact the coaching staff.
You can email: fb-recruiting@utk.edu
Or write:
Tennessee Athletics
P.O. Box 15016
Knoxville, TN 37901-5016

Just put "Regarding violations" on the envelope and it will get priority. :D

Y'all can jump all over this guy all you want, but I've been told, well, similar things, unfortunately. I'll be the first to say I don't know the kid personally and have no reason to doubt his character...but he isn't making at least some of this stuff up.

Hope JH has a long and fruitful career at UT and in the NFL. Go Vols.

What similar things? That's the point. Comes in here and throws vague accusations around like "better get his act together...", blah blah blah and never backs anything up with actual examples, sources, etc. Thats the primary reason he's getting flamed.

If true he has a rude awakening coming. And sadly I've heard people say he's very arrogant.

Thanks for your cooperation, 2013. Much appreciated. Thread cleaned so we can leave this discussion to Pickett.

I wish some random dude could just baselessly plaster your name out there as you just did. And he's a teenager at that. Your world would come crashing down if somebody did that to you on a public forum.

Co-worker who teaches Sunday class with some of Jalen's high school teammates said they told him they were upset with Jalen because he stopped coming to their games after he got hurt and was really playing up the 5 star UT signee. He's been pampered and made to feel really special just because he has special physical abilities just like the majority of highly ranked recruits. My friend laughed and said when he gets de-cleated by AJ Johnson, Curt Maggitt or some All- SEC linebacker in a game, it may bring him down to Earth. When you look at the upperclassmen on the team you will see how much they mature while there. Hopefully he will get his comeuppance soon and become a better person. On a better note, it appears Josh Malone seems like a much more down to earth kid. Good for him!

Josh Malone was always much more down to earth - just look at his recruiting and the way he acted at camps and practices. His parents knew what was in store for him and I think groomed him well and kept his head from getting too big. Isn't it just as much all of the fans fault for setting Jalen up as the second coming. That would be hard for any person, let alone an 18 year old that has people falling all over him telling him he is wonderful for years. It would be a very hard situation for most. Hope Justus Pickett and all the RBs have a great season - how wonderful it is to be able to play football for TN!

Wow.. there is some news for ya. People who achieve celeb status think their krap don't stink.

And before anyone jumps on the celeb thing, yes.. if you are on the football team.. 5* or not.. in Knoxville you are a celebrity.. That's the reason they get asked for autographs etc..

And now we have another student but-hurt that the girl he was mackin on dropped him flat to go talk to the celeb. And he says the football players should get treated like anyone else

Good luck with that...

You apparently have a problem with either reading comprehension or context. My post #48 was a reply to a post by another that has since been removed. In his post, he brought it up, not me. I responded that I didn't know if her had a problem or not, etc. I DID NOT bring it up, as I have NO knowledge. Understand?

Hurd didn't stop going to their games. He also enrolled in college months earlier than most kids and jealousy rises up when people leave others behind.
He's a 6'4 5* 18 yr old that's being counted on as the future RB at UT. Lets think about how some of you think you would handle everything, with people like random message board people tweeting, facebooking, etc.

I can't honestly say I know what this is like. I'm certainly no celebrity myself. Famous people can be harassed these days in ways that have never been possible before (twitter etc) and I understand that. It sucks. But, though I was young at the time, I seem to recall a certain Tennessee quarterback who, despite his famous last name and the boatload of press dumped on him, kept his head about him and handled the attention with the class and grace that's become the trademark of his career. And if I was a Tennessee player learning the ropes of being a local celebrity, I might give him a call. I think he'd be happy to share a few words of advice.

Just my opinion.

Anyway, Justus Picket...like him a lot. Apparently the coaches did too, last spring, before he was declared ineligible for 2013. I think he'll contribute this fall.

Agree. He is my dark horse of the RB stable. Not saying a starter barring horendous injuries. I bet he at least has 300 yards and a TD by bowl season.
