Kansas irrelevant.

point taken

I disagree with the abovementioned advice. Argue with Hatvol. It's a public forum. If you think you have a valid point and hatvol is wrong, then argue it... HatVol's rebuttals are almost always laced with personal attacks which, although clever in most cases, should not go unchallenged simply because he is known as the forum bully....

How many programs are in the red because of their inability to scrap together a decent budget. There is no way an athletic department should take 20+ million a year to run unless you choose to spend in excess.

As far as the basketball vs. football argument goes, in actual gate and concession sales it's unlikely any FBS school makes more money on basketball. However, in an indirect sense there are programs that would have trouble maintaining conference membership and the resulting TV contracts without their basketball program.

Does anyone think Temple wouldn't still be in the Big East if they had been competing for basketball titles on a yearly basis during the late 90s?

Seriously, according to this, Duke basketball pulled in $11mil but the AD as a whole generated $67mil. North Carolina comes the closest, with 1/3 of their revenue coming from basketball.

An aside, don't get in an argument with hatvol... he'd argue that the earth revolves around the moon with a brick wall until the wall collapsed out of frustration. Once he is committed to an argument, it would take an act of god to get him to budge on his position. Should go into politics.
Temple was never in the Big East in basketball.

Gotcha wpaine. And that is another point Hatvol that if temple would have been more competitive they would have been asked to join the Big East.

Ok Reece Davis just shared on espn that Football brings in the most revenue for the bcs athletic programs and that is why those fb tv markets are driving every move. He specifically mention how Kansas has no fb tv market and that is why they are not an attractive school. He then shared that Utah is being asked to join the pac-10 over Kansas because their fb program has a bigger fb tv market in salt lake city that would help expand the pac 10. They showed the total revenue that each bcs conference brings in and the pac 10 was last among the 6 conferences. Thay explained that even though usc has a huge LA tv market the rest of the pac 10 doesn't and the pac 10 has been behind the times in tv scheduling. Not a lot of Thursday night games or feature national matches except usc.

So to make it simple this is like if you are making a movie you would want Will Smith, Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, and Cameron DIaz. Not my favorite actors but ones who are proven to draw an audience to make you the most $$$. You wouldn't hire a percieved nobody who has no potential to make you $$$$. The new pac 10 commissioner left the big 12 years ago because they wouldn't listen to him on how to expand. He went to the big 10 and setup the big 10 network and made then tons of $$$. Now he is going to setup the pac 10 to make $$$. He has the tv networks in his back pocket because they know he knows what to do. And he isn't going to risk his professional reputation on a no fb tv market having team like kansas. Reece then went on to say that Tx a&m just got approval to not follow Tx and go to the sec. He said because fb is soooo huge in TX that the sec can now get that TX market and get a foot hold on TX recruiting. That's huge.

kansas is IRRELEVANT!!! There's your proof. Sorry HAtervol69.

What you're missing is what sport makes the profit. Football barely makes a profit because despite it's tv contracts, bowl games and what not it still costs way more than all other sports combined to operate. Kansas basketball is very, very relevant. So is Duke basketball, UNC bball and UK basketball. Basketball is drastically cheaper to operate.

Revenue does not equal profit.

you have to have large revenue just to pay for all the other sports. without a fb program kansas bb wouldn't be what it is today. why do you think bill self is goin nuts. he knows he is this close to being gonzaga or new mexico without a bcs conference. only a small percentage of athletic programs make money anyway. that is because the fb is paying all the bills. you have to be tx, bama, or fl to make the big bcs$$$ to make a huge profit. obviously the bb programs can't compete in that area.

football is a hell of a lot more expensive to run. just the scholorships by themselves. . ..

I know that. I've never looked at numbers, but I'd not be shocked if it cost more to run a football program than the rest of the athletic department combined.

People just assume that because a team can make $1 more doing something that is automatically trumps the face that it may cost an extra $2 to make that 1. Heck, you know this. Others just can't seem to grasp it.

ANd without a fb program you basically are of no value to a bcs conference. meaning you could always be excluded if they want. which means you would have a bb program to pay for itself and all other sports plus they would have to send money to the university to help fund the academics. without huge bcs fb tv contracts to fall back on you can't do it. it's ll about money everything is tied together. did anyone think that sports is just for fun lol. it's to make the college more $$$. for better library's, books, dorms, faculty raises. we might as well just agree to shut down the whole university structure just so bb programs can say they are king. and in 30 years they will still be using 2010 textbooks. meaning you would be less attractive as a school to attend.

Someone better tell Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. that you have to have a BCS football program in order to be a good academic school.

lol yeah. use 4 or 5 of the hundreds of schools to TRY and proove a point. Let's use vandy to lol. They don't need sports at all. But they cash that check don't they. All others better know their role. Bill Self does. He better not back talk football.
