Would be the death knell of the already moribund GOP. The socially liberal, fiscally conservative branch would break off from the socially conservative, wackadoo tea party base.

But as soon as it got legs the social conservatives hijacked it. The irony is they now rally around a guy that is not economically conservative (other than deregulation of his favored industries) and who is personally loathsome and an affront to all of their supposed moral tenets.
