Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Agree, the failure over the years to connect with top high school recruits is showing up now and looking bleak. Fans can’t be surprised by this staff as we have pages of recruits going elsewhere. The program won’t survive on portal and portal alone in the long term or even short term as this team is made up primarily of portal kids.
Portal players to me are like mercenaries to start with....
If a team needs that ONE player to say we can win Championship with this player added to our roster yes great...
But if you say as a HC we need a PG, Center, SG ...that tells me the recruiting being done isn't very good if your depending on portal for all those positions...

Agree, they are a plug and play. Not roster overhauls every 1-3 years.

Hollingshead is not being used or developed properly. She should be scoring inside. She's 6'5", has a wide body and is
fairly athletic, and she has shooting skill. There is no reason why she shouldn't be catching the ball in the paint and going up quickly and strongly and shooting 8-foot jumpers. No dribbling, no dithering: catch, rise and shoot; or catch, pivot one way, then pivot back the other way (thus getting body leverage on your marker), rise and shoot. It's being quick and explosive. She's not even looking to shoot. With her body, she should be able to play quite effectively with her back to the basket--IF you know the fundamentals of scoring in the paint, and the fundamentals are incredibly simple.

Only thing I'd disagree is that Jill has a wide body. She's pretty slender, esp lower body.

Heard an incredible stat during the SC game. Kamilla has like 60 baskets this yr and has only dribbled on 8 of them! And Dawn's probably mad about those. One thing that was frustrating about TK was her tendency to bring the ball down, negating the height advantage.

My favorite thing about Cardoso's game is she doesn't bring the ball down when she catches it but rather goes up. Too many post players want to take that dribble move before taking it up. Kamila is the exception though and not the rule.

I don’t think it’s coaching, it’s her mindset, she thinks she’s a guard and doesn’t really wanna be in the paint.

Please don’t do this here. Please take this to the bash Kellie thread, which I don’t read, thanks.
I'm with you brother...I support the Vols and their Coaches. The VOL Nation game threads for both Lady Vols and Men's games the other day were as bad or worse than I've ever seen. Had to take a shower after reading all that anti-Vol hate. After what seemed like hundreds of posts hating on Kellie I was just curious who they would hire to replace her. I support her and hope she turns this around.

Agree with your comment on who they would hire. Anytime you want to replace someone you must have a plan in advance. Anytime I hear someone complaining about a coach, I always ask who do you think you can go get.

On your comment about all the anti-vol hate, I believe there are some hate on here but I also believe there is some healthy criticism going on. I really have only been watching UT basketball for the last 7 years since my daughter chose UT for school. Here is my honest question, is the program making legitimate progress both in recruiting, on the floor and in the NCAA tournament since CKH took over? From where I sit, I don’t see it and I don’t see a plan to get there in the future recruiting.

If that is being Anti-Vol on a discussion board, then I am confused. It seems to me there are a lot of long term UT especially Lady Vol fans (dating back to Pat) that cannot see the forest for the trees due to their Orange colored glasses. This program is not making the progress it should with the UT resources and Heritage.

I think Jill thinks she's a 4, which seems like her natural position to me. The dream was Jill at 4 and a healthy TK at post.

100%. Jillian is actually learning the position as she goes.

This gap does fall on Kellie and staff but without Tamari, the LVs are very weak at post.

I think Striplin has come a long, long way. She has developed a decent -post-up game and has the potential to stretch the floor with her 3 point shooting.

Right now, we are actually better offensively with Strip on the court than Jillian (who is struggling on both ends really) but she does not hold up that well defending against good post players, as evinced by the ND game.
If the LVs could have taken away those easy paint points, ND does not come back.

Strip is an undersized post who and does not have much vertical. She battles to the hilt but some physical limits can't be overcome. Strip would be a good back-up option for Tamari but she is not a # 1 post at this level.

A lot is riding on Hollingshead fast tracking this season or TK shocking us all with miraculous return to form.

Yes: The way to score in the paint is to catch and shoot--go up fast and strong, or if you feel defensive pressure, fake going up one way, pivot and go up strong the other way, And if you've got a decent build, you use your body to create space. There is absolutely no reason to dither with the ball, or dribble, in the post. I'm shocked that Hollingshead has had, what, a meager 2 shots in each of the last 2 games.

I’ll say it again….no matter who we play, we will be out coached. KH is NOT a D-1 coach. She doesn’t know how to coach offense, doesn’t coach any defense and she isn’t respected by her players. This team will continue to loose games the same way we have seen the last few years. It’s sad to say that the Lady Vols have been relegated to also rans in basketball.

Which is why you surround yourself with talented coaches that make up for your weaknesses.

I am not a KJH supporter at this point in her tenure, but I think there are a lot of disingenuous things in your post. She clearly IS a Division One coach, lol... I mean that's been her job for oh, 19 years 🙃 I also would disagree with saying she isn't respected by her players. They must love her (i.e. Rickea choosing to come back versus opting for the draft). Her record would probably viewed as a "good coach" at any other school ( other than Uconn, SC, Maryland, Louisville, Stanford), but that isn't going to cut it at TN. Good shouldn't cut it here. I agree she is horrible at coaching offense.

It took all the greats a minute to get their feet under them once they established their home base. I can see a world where Kellie is ahead of schedule.

Not if she doesn't start getting some top 10 ish recruits in here, and that seems to be the sticking point.

Also, her luck, espec regarding injuries, has been horrible.

Has that happened at UT? Husband? Others?
No. No need to spin the answer.

Pat surrounded herself with coaches that made her better, DeMoss, Holly, Dean, Brown. Recruiting, development, game planning, in-game adjustments. If your coaching tree doesn’t have branches then you’re not bringing in the right people.

Mickie DeMoss done most of groundwork in recruiting....Pat just was a great finisher....

Tennessee recruiting isn’t the issue.

Tennessee has three elite HS commitments.

Can’t seem to get over the hump this year in closing games.

The players seem to still be trying to find that on court chemistry that comes with building a system that fits the personnel.

Making the proper adjustments and counter decisions once the opponents start to take away the 1st or 2nd option.
