Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

This Rickea situation is like Diamond with Holly. So much potential just wasted by mediocre coaching.
That's not really fair. Rickea's injury is not Kellie's fault, just another example of her horrible luck when it comes to injuries.
But still not so bad considering 5 years later it could be said we are in a worse a spot.
Also not fair, no need to exaggerate the already horrible situation. The only reason we're in a worse spot now is the cumulative effect of both Holly and Kellie's tenures. Holly was an equally bad in game coach and had zero control of the culture to boot.

Tennessee is going to face a size able amount of pressure to hire an African American female the next go around.

My bet would be on Yolette McCuin.

CH best years were with Holly players. RJ injury is the new buffer excuse for this years failures. No doubt she’s outstanding but her job isn’t to save the program alone.

Agree with the first, disagree strongly with the second sentence.

Yo is very much where KJH was when she was hired. We simply cannot hire another unproven coach who's best resume point is a recent miracle run in the tourney. Yo has already underachieved this year. Pass.

My question is this. Can this coaching staff get the team going in the right direction? Do they want to put in the effort to teach these players how to play the game? I'm not saying the LVs don't have the talent, they just don't have a "team" attitude towards the game. Now, this is the attitude that maybe the coaches have towards their job:
We will win the next game, it's only a matter of time. We don't want high school recruits, it's too much work. First, we have to convince them to come here. Then, we have to evaluate their weaknesses and strengths, then we have to teach them, we have to get them to play together and build chemistry, then we have to get them stronger in the weight room, then we have to get them on the same page as far as learning the LV system. Wow, that's a lot of work, and the worst part is we will have them for 4 years. Constantly working with them, getting them better, teaching them the game.
Well, we don't have to do that. Next year we can pick 2, or maybe 3 players out of the portal. Yeah, that's a lot easier. We don't have to teach them the game, because some other coach already did that for us. We don't know if they can play together, but what the hell, let's just throw them out there and see what happens. Maybe it will work out, but come next year, you have to start all over again, because in most cases, they will only be here for one year, 2 at the most. That to me is laziness.
Incompetency, well that is in the eye of the beholder. I think the fans can figure that out, but if that is the case, a change should be made based on that.
So what do you think? Laziness, incompetency, or both?

Fire Holly - all well and good, but who will they get at this point? Middle of the season-ish? If they wait till the end of the year, could they lure Kara away from Duke? I'm oddly pining for the days of Holly - at least the recruiting was exciting. Under Kelly, nothing is exciting...
Won't be any better with Kara either.

No this staff can’t. Last night showed without RJ we have a mid-major roster, even when a player has a night like Striplin. We have a roster of backup players and role players playing P5 basketball. Backups can keep a game close for awhile, eventually starters pull away.

Not sure it’s laziness but more tapped out athletic ability.

I wasn’t talking about the injury. Just her wasting Rickea’s skills here. Like Holly did with Diamond. Nothing Kellie has done has maximized Rickea’s nor Jewel’s potential here.

Starting to worry about how this'll impact Rickea's draft stock. Good players draft well from so-so schools, but the WNBA loves to boost the stock of players that are coming from schools that make deep tournament runs.

Not true. Rickea had her best year by far last year, even after a rough start. And in case anyone forgot, had 31/17/4 last time she played. Rickea was set up to finally reach her peak this year, had a great summer, then this. Just a terrible break for both her and the team.
Kara as an assistant coach would be fantastic though, I think
I actually think Kellie would make a great assistant. The players love her. She could be the Mommy assistant coach. Not going to happen in either case though.

I agree, Kellie probably would make an outstanding Jon/Sam/Joy on a bench with a coach who needs a good cop.

Lady Vol Basketball is suppose to be the #1 program in the country. Danny White needs to go out and get the best coach out there. No need for this program to settle on anything other than a big name

I'm worried the injury might impact her draft stock more. It appears to be an ongoing, chronic injury rather than an acute one like an ankle sprain or something. Not a good sign.

Has anyone had a more tortuous college career than Rickea? Some of it is definitely on her, but man, her journey has been rough. Which makes it even worse to have this injury take her out now when she's finally settled into a program she's comfortable in. And after how hard she worked this summer, and how successful she was.

Or impact her demeanor.
Nah, she's smart enough and now will be appreciative enough of her playing time that she'll bust her tail to prove all she can in the short time she'll have left. Her high power agent, Jade English, is certainly smart enough to keep her on track attitude wise. Not to speak of her Mom.

With a nagging injury now on her resume, the last thing she needs to show the W is attitude problems.

The program doesn't need a big name per se, it needs a very good coach with a hiring process free from bias.
