Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Not much to gain by firing now. I would have a long honest talk with Kellie as well as the entire staff. Let them know straight out that we need to see immediate and substantial improvement and we would revisit all this just as soon as the season ends and make decisions on the future of the program based on these outcomes.

In my opinion White Danny is in a bit of a jam as he just extended coach Harper back in April, following an appearance in the SEC championship game and a visit to the Sweet 16, which should be automatic for legacy programs like Tennessee, but it isn't that way anymore. Absent a wholesale collapse in the SEC season, I don't get the impression a women's basketball coach search is what White Danny would like to be doing in March and April.

Tennessee has done a piZZ poor job of succession planning in all sports, particularly in the women's game, when most other schools have plans in place, Tennessee's athletic directors have had no desire to try and sell the women's program and the championship banners already hung to a proven head coach that is totally unrelated to coach Summitt. Harper is a Fulmer hire, which by definition raises the concern about what, if any, due diligence was actually done to look at her ability to recruit and develop top tier players at her prior stops and compete at a high level,

The recruiting strategy in 2023 was a disaster as the four targets all chose some place other than Tennessee and I'm not sure how the 2024 class will build out or what NIL money Tennessee is having to raise or to compete against for talent in the SEC. We are already distances behind LSU and South Carolina in our own conference and may be slipping further with the absence of a substantive 2023 class, but I'm moving toward the camp that White Danny doesn't give a rip about women's basketball and won't make any changes unless he was going to offer the UCF women's coach the job at Tennessee.

Trying to get a Dawn, Mulkey, or Geno is a pipe dream. None would leave their current jobs to come to our dumpster fire. Cori Close at UCLA is not leaving there anytime soon either. If we aren't able to get a national championship winning coach, someone I'd take a closer look at is Megan Duffy from Marquette. She's young and has been successful in her now 5th year at Marquette. Her record is 94-34 and has led Marquette to 3 NCAA tournaments in her previous 4 years (would've been all four if not for COVID). Last year she beat both UConn and Texas and this year has them undefeated and ranked in the Top 10 with wins over #23 Illinois and Arkansas.

Also, her team beat Memphis by 29 points this year in case you look at common opponents. She played at Notre Dame and also in the WNBA. Couple her energy and drive with hiring a top recruiter and that may just lead to success. May not be the answer, but if we aren't willing to break the bank to get that top level coach, she might be one to watch throughout the season...

One can point to Fulmer as the turd of athletic decisions at UT over the years but White made a big mistake at extending Harper. It was already going to be a tough conversation but now it can almost be no conversation. The program may be in worse shape than during Warlick's tenure.

Please Lady Vols rhinos stay out of the coaching discussions with the administration in the future trying to get your favorite "this is what Pat would want". Yall suck at it!

I agree there's no need to fire her now.

Honestly, with or without RJ, there's just not enough talent here to meet program expectations. Changing coaches during middle of season isn't changing that...

One more thought - wonder if Matthew Mitchell from Kentucky is ready to come back to coaching? He had over 300 wins in 13 seasons at UK. He did say that he wouldn't rule out a return to coaching down the road, but unfortunately it's only been 3 years since he stepped aside.

This was supposed to be the year for us to get back on the map in women’s basketball. Instead, it’s trending towards being the worst season in program history. Basically the 2005 football season on hardwood.

You brought up Cori Close but what about the other coach in LA? Lindsay Gottlieb at USC. Probably a long shot too, but she signed the best freshman in the country in Juju Watkins. Took Cal to their first ever Final Four before leaving for a job in the NBA. Won 21 games in year 2 at USC last year, including beating Stanford. Has USC ranked 6th right now. USC hasn’t really been relevant in WBB since Cheryl Miller played. If she can revive a program that’s been dead that long…

I don’t think he’s coming back to coaching.

Since it seems that neither Wells nor Puckett will pass the ball to Spear, maybe they need to sit on the bench and let little darby and Jewel play together. little Darby seems to know how to move the ball . jmho.

I don’t think she’s gone after this yr either but I do think the AD will put a little pressure on her to make a change with the staff. But Kellie is so bullheaded she’s going try to ride without making changes until the wheels fall off.
