Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

Why is that??? How about the best available candidate...not based on sk8n color..

We all know that's not how the world works.

A sport where more than a majority of players are African-American. Don't be naïve man. Go talk to some of the AAU coaches in the Atlanta area. People notice.

Now thats not to say you can't get around it. If they could land Becky Hammon, Jeff Walz, (I'm just throwing names out here) etc. etc. people would get it. But if you don't go big and just hire another ho-hum hire without a national pedigree its going to get noticed.

Not a chance Stanford's coach leaves that job for UT. Better program, much nicer campus, more prestigious university, and--I'm sorry--coastal California vs Knoxville? I've lived in Cali...it's a magical place (if you have money). Knoxville is quaint, but it can't compete with the California coast.

Can we apply your logic to any other field??? Like campus professors,?

You can apply it where ever you want. These aren't my rules. I'm just telling you there is going to be an unspoken perception if a third unremarkable hire is made post Pat Summit in a certain direction.

Kara Lawson has already alluded to it in prior statements as a member of the BOT.

Perception is reality even if you don't like it.

I don’t think she’s gone after this yr either but I do think the AD will put a little pressure on her to make a change with the staff. But Kellie is so bullheaded she’s going try to ride without making changes until the wheels fall off.

Or she’s going to make the dumb decision of not removing Jon from the staff

I’m sure these are great coaches but would we want a mid 60’s hire?
correct also remember a proven top tier coach is gonna cost a lot to hire away from where they are and also remember that in looking for next big thing that Geno and Jeff for example were young unproven assistant coaches when someone took a chance with them ADs must have an eye for potential

It’s time for her to go and might as well go ahead and make that decision. Given that she is a LVFL and national championship player under Summitt, I would be ok if White offered her an out to resign and move on herself. If not, then just go ahead and make the change. What she has done is unacceptable and does not the meet the Lady Vol standard. Give Danny White track record of hiring coaches, I would bet he would hire an home run hire. Fulmer went with the safe hire when he hired Harper. He wasn’t interested in getting the Lady Vols back to the elite level it once was not so long ago. This is one of those jobs that would not be hard to fill and it’s one of the top jobs in the country.

The Lady Vols have never missed the NCAA tournament since it started in 1982. The Vols are the only team in the country to make the ncaa tournament every year. And to think they could miss it this year is just sicking. I trust Danny White to make an elite hire to lift the program back up more than I do Fulmer.

I think the only question at this point is, do you let her finish out the year? Or do you go ahead and make the change now and make Samatha Williams the interim HC and hope for a spark that leads to the NCAA tournament? Firing now before SEC play may be the best move. You can use the next 3 games against ECU, Wofford, and Liberty to adjust the lineups and change a few things before SEC play starts. Either way, I will remeber her time as a player, not as a coach.

All this time we were directed that kids now make their decisions based on NIL and not the unspoken perception.

I don't think Harper gets fired mid year unless there is a major, major revolt from the players. I'm now a member of the "not working out" camp and believe she should be replaced at season's end baring a sizable turnaround.

However, UT will have to decide if they want to remain a top 5 to 10 program in terms of success and investment. If so, they need to open the wallet and go find the best coach out there. I don't know who is willing to leave their current situation or who else may be out there but I'd make the top names tell me no before I crossed anyone off the list.

We can agree to disagree...Race should play no factor

Tennessee basketball is irrelevant to today’s generation of players. Why would a top player want to play here? Tradition really means nothing to the current group - only the older folks, myself included. Also, the landscape has dramatically changed since the days Pat’s teams played. Pat certainly lead the charge in bringing the sport along - but very doubtful the program would dominate as it once did.
Current staff and roster is very mediocre. Sad to say…
"Tennessee basketball is irrelevant to today’s generation of players" No, it's not. UT is a perennial top 25 team and Sweet 16 participant. It is one of the Top TV performers as evidence that it drew over a million viewers one already this year against a rising, but not great, power. It still has Top 10 attendance for games in a major facility. It still played a top 5 schedule every year. It still pulls off a major upset with some regularity: See LSU and SCar. in the past three years. Maybe Others UT basketball is not irrelevant, UT's old-time records are Not relevant. Tome Osborn was a legendary football coach. Nebraska can't rely appeal to appeal to today's generation.
Why would a top player want to play here? What are my chances of starting as a frosh or soph? Can you pay me an average NIL? What opportunities for individual NIL did y'all help Horston and Jackson get? Can you prepare me to get drafted?

Tradition really means nothing to the current group - only the older folks, myself included. Agreed
Also, the landscape has dramatically changed since the days Pat’s teams played. Pat certainly lead the charge in bringing the sport along - but very doubtful the program would dominate as it once did. Pat was a great coach, No doubt. But the sport is bigger and parity has increased.. If she were reborn as the UT coach today, she would have you in the Top teams every year along with Geno, Tara, Kim and Dawn. But the past is the past folks. y'all gotta move on. Forget the tree. Find an up and comer. Who was the assistant at Oregon that helped recruit their 19/20 senior class? I cant remember his name, but he recruited a heck of a 2020 freshman class, but he moved on to a head coaching position and Oregon collapsed but still recruited we well. Now, four years later, the ducks are dead in the water. What was his name
