Uconn's next game is against Louisville. Could go either way?My question is this. Can this coaching staff get the team going in the right direction? Do they want to put in the effort to teach these players how to play the game? I'm not saying the LVs don't have the talent, they just don't have a "team" attitude towards the game. Now, this is the attitude that maybe the coaches have towards their job:
We will win the next game, it's only a matter of time. We don't want high school recruits, it's too much work. First, we have to convince them to come here. Then, we have to evaluate their weaknesses and strengths, then we have to teach them, we have to get them to play together and build chemistry, then we have to get them stronger in the weight room, then we have to get them on the same page as far as learning the LV system. Wow, that's a lot of work, and the worst part is we will have them for 4 years. Constantly working with them, getting them better, teaching them the game.
Well, we don't have to do that. Next year we can pick 2, or maybe 3 players out of the portal. Yeah, that's a lot easier. We don't have to teach them the game, because some other coach already did that for us. We don't know if they can play together, but what the hell, let's just throw them out there and see what happens. Maybe it will work out, but come next year, you have to start all over again, because in most cases, they will only be here for one year, 2 at the most. That to me is laziness.
Incompetency, well that is in the eye of the beholder. I think the fans can figure that out, but if that is the case, a change should be made based on that.
So what do you think? Laziness, incompetency, or both?
Our definition of lack of effort is different. You see all failure as lack of effort. If only they tried harder, maybe jumped and down and yelled. I think most failure is lack of ability.
I don't really see many of the kids who will be seniors next year, which is almost all of them, transferring. Where would they go with just one year of eligibility left?
I'm more worried about who we might persuade to transfer in. Next year we have exactly 2 post players, Strip and Jill, and both will be seniors. We'll have one forward, Sara, unless Jewel is counted as a forward. The other 10 or so are all guards. This roster imbalance is where the recruiting misses have just killed us.
I disagree. They do have emotion - scared, aprehensive, shell-shocked. They've pretty much been that way since Rickea went out and Memphis took them to OT.
Just can't wrap my head around Jewel stepping back in this circumstance and not up. That has been a killer.
Studette.....What I don't understand is how a former point guard who played for Pat Summit and won 3 NCs can't teach her players ball control and the value of each possession. Last night's 11 t.o.s was one of the fewest of the season, yet they still lost by 11. Just dribble down the court make 1-2 passes and jack up a three.
On a brighter note, Striplin was an absolute STUD last night. Without her, this would've been a 25+ point loss Give credit where due...she deserves recognition while everyone is piling on the coaching staff.
This is exactly the issue, we have players that wouldn’t get any minutes on any good team, the coaching staff doesn’t know how to evaluate players correctly. No this staff can’t. Last night showed without RJ we have a mid-major roster, even when a player has a night like Striplin. We have a roster of backup players and role players playing P5 basketball. Backups can keep a game close for awhile, eventually starters pull away.
Not sure it’s laziness but more tapped out athletic ability.
Players leaving will be a good thing, Spear can stay and maybe some elite players will come in with a clean slate. If this slide continues, look for a number of portal transfers out at the end of the season. Some need to do that but the issue is getting players to transfer in and recruits signed if the program looks like a sinking ship with no chance of saving it.
If this is the case, IMO a coaching change is the only way to start over.
