Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

We need to offer to a successful and proven coach.

Love Kara Lawson and actually was in college at same time as her and met her but she needs more experience. Hire someone that has been making Final Four runs. Go for Tara Vanderveer at Stanford, Jeff Mettie at Kansas State, Kenny Brooks at Virginia Tech, . They will be taking a price cut with all the conference realignment mess. I would go after high profile coach in ACC or Big12 because they likely can't match SEC money now.

There are probably other coaches out there as well. Take advantage of this conference realignment mess and look at some of these schools that can't pay up as much.

LSU hired Kim Mulkey away from Baylor and won a National Title already. We need to be doing the same.

Mulkey would still be at Baylor if they hadn't snubbed her.

What I don't understand is how a former point guard who played for Pat Summit and won 3 NCs can't teach her players ball control and the value of each possession. Last night's 11 t.o.s was one of the fewest of the season, yet they still lost by 11. Just dribble down the court make 1-2 passes and jack up a three.

On a brighter note, Striplin was an absolute STUD last night. Without her, this would've been a 25+ point loss Give credit where due...she deserves recognition while everyone is piling on the coaching staff.

Failure by said coach to make in-game adjustments is “lack of effort.” Failure by said coach to learn from previous games, whether a win or loss, and use that knowledge to help improve play/players…”lack of effort.”
Our definition of lack of effort is different. You see all failure as lack of effort. If only they tried harder, maybe jumped and down and yelled. I think most failure is lack of ability.
If this slide continues, look for a number of portal transfers out at the end of the season. Some need to do that but the issue is getting players to transfer in and recruits signed if the program looks like a sinking ship with no chance of saving it.

If this is the case, IMO a coaching change is the only way to start over.
I don't really see many of the kids who will be seniors next year, which is almost all of them, transferring. Where would they go with just one year of eligibility left?

I'm more worried about who we might persuade to transfer in. Next year we have exactly 2 post players, Strip and Jill, and both will be seniors. We'll have one forward, Sara, unless Jewel is counted as a forward. The other 10 or so are all guards. This roster imbalance is where the recruiting misses have just killed us.

I was thinking the same thing about transfers..Sara and Strip go to Alabama. The only sure players coming back are the Darby girls and Ace
Don’t go all in on the Darby girls. If a change takes place they may look elsewhere to finish and play.

My question is this. Can this coaching staff get the team going in the right direction? Do they want to put in the effort to teach these players how to play the game? I'm not saying the LVs don't have the talent, they just don't have a "team" attitude towards the game. Now, this is the attitude that maybe the coaches have towards their job:
We will win the next game, it's only a matter of time. We don't want high school recruits, it's too much work. First, we have to convince them to come here. Then, we have to evaluate their weaknesses and strengths, then we have to teach them, we have to get them to play together and build chemistry, then we have to get them stronger in the weight room, then we have to get them on the same page as far as learning the LV system. Wow, that's a lot of work, and the worst part is we will have them for 4 years. Constantly working with them, getting them better, teaching them the game.
Well, we don't have to do that. Next year we can pick 2, or maybe 3 players out of the portal. Yeah, that's a lot easier. We don't have to teach them the game, because some other coach already did that for us. We don't know if they can play together, but what the hell, let's just throw them out there and see what happens. Maybe it will work out, but come next year, you have to start all over again, because in most cases, they will only be here for one year, 2 at the most. That to me is laziness.
Incompetency, well that is in the eye of the beholder. I think the fans can figure that out, but if that is the case, a change should be made based on that.
So what do you think? Laziness, incompetency, or both?
Tennessee basketball is irrelevant to today’s generation of players. Why would a top player want to play here? Tradition really means nothing to the current group - only the older folks, myself included. Also, the landscape has dramatically changed since the days Pat’s teams played. Pat certainly lead the charge in bringing the sport along - but very doubtful the program would dominate as it once did.
Current staff and roster is very mediocre. Sad to say…

Jeff Mittie?

I'm sure he is a lovely guy, but his 9-year record at K-State is 164-127 (.564). Overall, his 32-year coaching record is 618-362 (.631). A lot of that is padded by a lot of success in his first years at a mid-major.

Tara leave Stanford? That would be like Pat leaving Tennessee.

Not much to gain by firing now. I would have a long honest talk with Kellie as well as the entire staff. Let them know straight out that we need to see immediate and substantial improvement and we would revisit all this just as soon as the season ends and make decisions on the future of the program based on these outcomes.
Or much to lose, when a CEO fails ZERO reason to keep them around. It’s business and the business is failing.

Does Parker even want to coach? UT tried Holly and Kellie and it's been a decade trying that. Move on from Pat's tree and go get the best possible. I don't know who would come here if the money was there, but it's not going to be Mulkey, Geno, Tara, Dawn, or Vic.
Chris Dailey or Lisa Boyer top assistants at best 2 programs

none of the coaches you mentioned as ones you would want are former Tennessee womens basketball players who played under Pat Summitt, so they are non-starters for this fanbase. Remember, nothing says disrespect to them like mentioning a potential coach who did not play here. And quite frankly, i doubt this is Danny White's decision. Its like a marriage over there between the mens and womens athletic departments, the women do the shopping and tell the men to pay for it

It's not laziness or incompetence. Job is just too big for her. Saw it at NCSU and we are seeing it now. There's only a small handful of coaches that are cut out for this (or similar) jobs and Kellie isn't one of them...
