Kellie Harper discussion/debate thread [merged]

And that is the very problem. Kellie has put the leadership of this team in the hands of Darby. #4 in minutes played. Striplin, the most consistent one this season is 6th...figure that out.

Said about Darby in the article:

“I think we’ve found our niche with Tess defensively,” Harper said. “The end of the game we weren’t getting stops at Vanderbilt. We had to put Tess back in on the defensive end. Not because of her quickness and her lateral speed, but just her IQ. She’ll communicate, she understands where she needs to be. We’ve found what kind of works for her.”

I forget the article, but somewhere else Coach Harper said Tess Darby was calling the defensive movements.

If I was Kea and I was sitting on the bench, virtually ignored, I would sit back and let the so called leadership and designated leader show me that she can do what I do and instill it into the troops.
Tess has taken a lesser floor role with the numbers. Granted playing more because of who’s out and not necessarily because of what she can or cannot do.

Maybe they don't feel they've "disrespected the legacy" whatever that means? Listen, too many of them are simply not quite players at a consistent level we need to compete for championships. Period. So they lose games. They are not happy about it, and it's not for "the swag".

That your default reason for bad play is that they're lazy and greedy probably says more about you Mr. Grinch.
And that’s the problem. The legacy is cutting down nets hoisting banners of accomplishments…not just adding the year to the S16.

The legacy is a tad more than that brother. There's graduating, being a decent human being, stuff like that.

So every LVFL who left here without cutting down nets (maybe 75% of them) "disrespected the legacy"? So dramatic!

That should be expected, I hate to say it like that. Not every team…but the teams that lose to MTSU, get bounced in round 1 and hate to say it win a SECC since the last one.

That would be so effing childish and petty. The kind of middle school games you don't need on a team already under pressure. Virtually ignored? What do you want them to do, make a periodic pilgramage?

Aren't those quotes about Leader Tess from last year? Not the same situation now.

Again, ya'll have no idea who's looked to as "leader" and how that plays out on this team. Maybe they do need better "leadership" but I'm sure they'll fix any of that internally without our help.
teams are comprised of players,,,teams take on the traits/personalities of their coaches.

Cora got all on top of Kellie for throwing her players under the bus..which was a childish.
Full circle. And those quote, I read this year,,,just can't remember the article right now. But I will find them when I can sit down and kook for them.

glv...No one, but NO ONE that I know is more of an Alpha personality than I am. And when I fall under management leadership that puts someone unqualified in a position of leading me, I shut down and let the "designated leader" fail. What else can I do? Jumping up and down isn't always a smart tactic for an Alpha,,,some times we have to watch someone else fail to show the management how wrong they are.

Middle school, maybe for your experiences. I am presently working for a company that has 125 items in their inventory with negative QOH,,,AFTER an inventory count was done less than a month ago. Not one item corrected and not one item obsoleted after the counts were done. No corrections made at all....Should I jump up and dawn and cry foul...I have addressed my senior management about it and all I got was, how much faith he had in HIS placement of those leaders.

that the same reason she was 4th in minutes last year,,,ahead of J Walker, Sara, Karoline..Yea, ok

You say this however Kellie has beaten 3 of the 4 teams over the last 4 years, which means in Head to Head matchups she's beaten three out of the four coaches here. If she doesn't know how to coach how did this happen? Beat Vic Shafer, beat Dawn Staley, and beat kim Mulkey. How can this be?
Occasionally a blind hog will find an acorn!!!
What are you confusing facts with issues. So she beat a good team a few times..............the Program is in the Pits!!

Remind me, what's Kellie's record against ranked teams again... ?

This is not a demonstrative team. They are not yellers and screamers. They cheer appropriately, were pretty fired up after the OK game, including RJ. They cheer comebacks from the bench appropriately. They just don't show big emotions outwardly very often. This is true of the team in general and both KJH and RJ specifically.

Many have the kneejerk response that THIS is the problem - lack of passion. If only someone would jump up and down and scream we'd feel alot better. But not showing big emotion does not mean they don't have them. We have no idea how things play out behind the scenes or who leads who where. All that crap about no effort, no passion, lack a leader, call a meeting, is just stuff frustrated fans write. If fixing technical problems were as easy as all that, it would have been done long ago.

RJ specifically is very much a focus player. She'll certainly let a ref know if she's unhappy and definitely have a quick word or so with an opponent. But generally she's is very even and dialed in on the court. W scouts have mentioned that as an asset. So if you're looking for a theatrical display of "leadership" fm her, you are unlikely to get it. Right now, it's a tricky situation trying to "lead" when you're not practicing or playing.

We're so into facial expression and body language parsing these days. Could what you see as "disinterested" possibly be "sad" instead? Like it's kinda hard watching your team get a mudhole stomped in them and nothing you can do sad? And each loss bringing more and more pressure for when you do get back sad? Bet you if she was dancing and laughing during some of these losses there would be stuff said. Ain't too happy over there right now.

Bottom line, you can play hard and work hard without making a show of it. You can care and try hard wo pointing it out. You can "lead" without a public audience. And we have zero real idea what goes on with any of it.

Folks have been misreading RJ's facial expressions and body language wrong from the moment she stepped in campus. Switching contexts, Tim Duncan was the most stoic player in history and he won everything.

Some fans love to see a coach screaming at a player after a making a mistake because that us what They want to do but do do they think the player being yelled at does not know he/she blew it and feels bad about the consequences. Is screaming teaching a lesson or adding to humiliation so the coach (and fans) feel like "something" has been done?

Every LVFL that left here still respected the legacy by being a decent human being and graduating. Your words. If you can’t differentiate between team legacy and individual legacy, that’s your problem.

Oh not disgraces individually just as teams. Oh ok. Still rubbish. People can be bad at their jobs or roles and not be evil or awful.

That quote is scary

She is so loyal to her " recruiting guru's" that it's destroying this great tradition of women's basketball. They CAN'T recruit High school players and that is a PROVEN FACT. If she isn't willing to make changes she HAS to go. Dragging this Great legacy through the mud.
Loyal? She changed recruiting assistants mid way in her stay here. The results are terrible. So two sets of recruiters are epic fails. What can we discern from that?

if we want another 5 mediocre years then sure. we need a proven elite coach, not one that COULD be elite. UTC is nothing like UT and that’s something kellie has learned the hard way coming for MO. ST.
Many years ago there was a WCBB coach at UTC named Wes Moore. He was highly regarded as a good coach but a number of people said he would not be as successful at the P5 level. A prove elite P5 WCBB coach is going to stay where he/she is unless he/she wants to transfer to another program, e.g., Mulkey, Schaefer.

Tennessee is presently sitting at #98 in the NCAA’s net rankings,,,Above them within the state of Tennessee are: Middle TN ST U#55,, Vanderbilt #62,,Chattanooga #95. Making them the 4th best team in the state.

How can this be?

Get the leadership right, the rest takes care of itself. How can this be? It took year 5 for many here to realize she’s in over her head. Fans too caught up in Kellie Jolly the player and not looking at Coach Harper who’s more OVC.

What ranked teams did any of those other 3 play or even attempt to play and win? Those teams have played very few games against teams ranked above 150 in the net. Had Tennessee played any of those teams schedules they would probably be ranked in the top 10 net rankings. Wins and point spread play a big role in the net rankings.
