Kellie Harper to Missouri

Kind of echo everyone's best wishes to KH for success in COMO. But I don't understand Mizzou's thinking here. If she couldnt make it in Raleigh and Knox how is she going to make it in COMO?
They are thinking is that if she has anything close to the success that she had in Knoxville, they will give her a lifetime contract. The resume she built here would get her an extension at 95% of the college basketball jobs that exist. But she held one of the jobs that had higher expectations than that, and that’s why she doesn’t have it anymore.

A lot of people in the coaching community and the athletic administration community always felt like she didn’t get a fair shake at NC State because the alumni never got behind her after they endorsed Kay Yow‘s longtime assistant to take over, and they fired the whole staff and hired Kellie instead. Those same people feel like Tennessee is an impossible job for the reasons I mentioned above. She has an opportunity to prove everybody right or everybody wrong now, we’ll see which way it goes.

Stephanie Glance who is now HC at Columbia U. If y'all remember, Pat hired Stephanie when she was let go by NC State as Special assistant.

I’m surprised Kellie is getting back in coaching so soon, but I guess she saw the opportunity and jumped on it. I wish her the best, except when coaching against TN.

Missouri’s expectations are to go to the NCAA tournament more often than not. If she advances to the round of 32 or even the sweet 16 a couple of times, she will be able to coach there until she is ready to retire.
I totally get Mo motivation and think they're lucky to have Kellie. Its her motivation I don't get bc the expectations you laid out are exactly what is likely to happen. I just don't understand why she'd want to sit there and absorb routine beatings she can't do anything about due to being undermanned. Hoping for the middle of the pack as a highlight til she retires will only lock in the narrative of her as a middling to meh coach. Why in the world?

Could be she just loves coaching that much. If so it's admirable, but its going to be painful to watch play out. Unless of course they do plan to invest in her program. But I doubt it.

I don’t get the KH basing. She may do well there, who can predict? I think it adds extra pressure to KC and DW for obvious reasons. That’s either a bad thing or good thing depending on perspective. I think it’s good. KC better adjust to big girl ball and not be fixated on the uniqueness of her style. She doesn’t have to completely change, just tweak it. Recruit at a high level and win at a high level. She’s off to a good start.

Mine isn't bashing KH at all. It's concern and trying to understand. I hate to see her line herself up for further beating.

As for pressure on current LV program, Kellie and Mo can only dream to be competitive enough to make them even notice. Fair or unfair, DW forgot her name before her desk was cleared. Without a huge leap in support, MO won't be a blip on the radar. No coach is good enough these days to make headway wo resources to get top players.

Also, whatever her results are, I believe KH will always be warmly welcomed on Rocky Top.

I don’t want to imagine the meltdown here if the LVs lose to MO next season.

1) it's completely unlikely to happen.
2) KH would be a storyline for the game broadcast and on social media for a while but probably more troubling would be what it would indicate about the LV program. Something would have to be really wrong for the group coming in and coming back to lose at home to Mo, no matter who's coaching them. Worse than GA this year.
3) it's completely unlikely to happen.

Missouri has a lot of other things to worry about other than Tennessee.
Tennessee has a Top 5 win over UConn, Top 20 ranking, Top #1/#2 recruiting class, 43 straight NCAA tourney bid as a #5 seed which is a higher seed than last season, and mutiple core players set to return next season in the first season under Coach Caldwell.
Anyone thinking Coach Caldwell and Danny White is going to lose a second of sleep over who Missouri hired is speaking of a fantasy.
Sometimes certain posts on this forum simply make no sense at all.
The only thing right now to say is good luck to Coach Harper. You can support her without trying to build up some false narrative about beating Tennessee and NIL bickering.

Agreed

After all, we did crush them by five points this year.

The difference is that Missouri is not expecting her to sign multiple five star prospects every year. Tennessee did. You don’t have to have the ability to throw a six figure offer or match a six figure offer to keep a committed recruit at Missouri. She did at Tennessee. It’s not the whole reason she didn’t win big here, but it’s certainly part of the story.

I see it a tad differently. She could have those no worries at a school like Tennessee Tech, if she won the conference every few years and made it to the tournament. Eventually at an SEC school, the expectations will rise. She’s going to recruit kids that want NIL and seems you laid out she won’t get it to compete with the bigger and more enticing schools. Missouri seems to be putting faith in that she can do more with less.

And that’s where cracks in this yr started showing. Cracks they could get away with this yr, but not next yr at all. Mulligan,s expired next November.

Lol dear God that’s a triggering phrase. But unfortunately seems spot on.

For her part, I,m going w KJH just wants to die w the whistle on no matter the cost.

Unless I missed something, that seems how it was laid out.

Mizzou hired Cuonzo Martin after he fizzled out here. I don’t see this ending much differently.

Oh well, gets us off the hook for the buyout, anyway.

Would you rather make $180,000 to be the head coach of Tennessee Tech and have to win your conference tournament every year to make the NCAA tournament, or would you rather make $1.2 million at Missouri and be assured to make the NCAA tournament by finishing in the top half of your conference, which is doable with her coaching abilities? I think that’s a pretty easy choice.

This. ⬆️

She is wise to seize this opportunity to be able to save and invest the most for her family’s future. She knows very well how quickly it can all be gone, and now that she’s 47 she’s probably reached that point where you start to understand more fully how shockingly quickly that being on the downside of a life and career can sneak up on you. Hope they make the most of this!
