I would say it started after halftime of the loss to LSU in the SEC championship game on December 8th, 2001. Mark it down baby. Just my opinion. Anyone else agree?

I agree. I was at this game. The 2nd half began the downfall. Sure there have been some glimpses of what was but that's all. That "I am Tennessee and will find a way to win" began to fade that night.

I thought the future played hard for Tennessee until he got hurt in the GA game. He may have been treated different because he was old enough to buy beer. He had nothing to do with our demise. Didn't we kick Michigans A$$ in the bowl? Glad he was a Vol!

I totally agree! I remember that night like it was yesterday. We were headed to the Rose Bowl to play in the national championship. We had just beaten Florida IN THE SWAMP (Spurrier's last game there...btw). That game was postponed because of 9/11. We were all in and ready to stomp the Tigers. When their QB went out the place was all a buzz because we were GUARANTEED the win at that point. Then we lost. It was awful. And an LSU fan almost puked on me on the MARTA getting back to my car.

That was the only time in all my years at Tennessee that I won the away game "lottery." I gave the other ticket to my brother. It was a great experience just for that.

I know...I know...cool story bro. You will have to say...cool story sis, though.

I recall a lot of fans and even some on here over the years stating the beginning of the end of TN football coming as the way Fulmer handled the Kelly Washington premadonna situation. I for one thought he was just lucky in thd LSU reg-season game and recall him skipping out of bounds the next year against Fla instead of going for the firat down. Realistically, how many of you give credit to him fo r start of the decline?
Nominated for volnation posts hall of fame.

Kelly "the future" Washington should be held in full responsibility for the downfall of Tennessee football.

It's only fair.

that guy was such a douche. but don't know how anyone could attribute our downfall to him. the program just steadily declined over about 7 years or so while almost all our rivals improved. simple as that. then the one year fiasco with kiffie just sank us.

The loss of Rodney Garner coupled with the hire of Richt at Ga along with the missing on kids we recruited caused CPF problems. We got highly rated kids to school that never played a down at UT. Lots of them over several years. (more than normal for any program) Hammys ignorance and the loss of Joe Johnson as president didn't help much either. During a 5 year span the Legislators' voted to change things in the UT system that changed longtime control at the school. The telling change was the pressure to move the legislators parking from Middle Way Dr to the 11th St garage. In lue of a greenway where the Engineering building parking lot was and still is. (all Hammys crap) it never happened. During that 5year span those things along with the retirement of Captain Frills at UT PD turned power and control of completely to Hamilton. BAD IDEA. We are still dealing with some of the after effects with Cheek and a few other clown's. Just my 2 cents GO VOLS

That's why you heard them say we had things that had to be changed that was putting us at a disadvantage. Several people made behind the scenes decisions as it pertains to money and entrance to the school for athletics that was unheard-of at any school not just UT. Caused by the shift in power. Some of those people now realize that without FOOTBALL being strong the school is negatively effected in every area. From class to the cafeteria.

The real truth is that I really do believe that Fulmer got to comfortable in his job. Atleast that is the way I feel.

I think there is truth in that, but that happens to every coach who is at a school long-term. They usually pull out of it and turn things around. The pressure coupled with the decline caused the release of Randy Sanders. If Fulmer hire's the rt guy after CDC leaves.... He is still at UT and he turns things around. Dave Clawsen drove the final nail in CPF.

I pity the thought of how many games we lose without each of our opponents focusing their defensive strategy on #15. The guy was a freaking beast.
Iirc, the guy single handedly dismantled a waaay overmatched Rutgers team that we played down to, then had to win at the end. Without KW, we very possible lose Rutgers again in a remake of the 70s version!
Fulmer may have handled the guy wrong. We'll never clearly know from the outside. But, I would take a few issues to have KW on our side. He was like a grown man playing against boys.

I think I lost faith in Phil in 2002 Peach Bowl against Maryland . We were getting smashed and they put the cameras on the players and they were laughing on the side lines... I think Kelly was there if my mind serves me right
