I think the theory that Kelly Washington started the decline is a joke. It really just doesn't make any sense.

I do think there was a sizeable fraction of our fanbase offended by his ...ummm...demeanor.

I never really understood the hostility towards him. He was pretty arrogant but there are quite few arrogant football players around.

I recall a lot of fans and even some on here over the years stating the beginning of the end of TN football coming as the way Fulmer handled the Kelly Washington premadonna situation. I for one thought he was just lucky in thd LSU reg-season game and recall him skipping out of bounds the next year against Fla instead of going for the firat down. Realistically, how many of you give credit to him fo r start of the decline?

And why are we discussing this?

Kelly was not the sickness, he was one of the first symptoms that revealed the sickness. 2001 LSU SEC championship game, backup QB, 2002 Peach Bowl embarrassment to Maryland, etc were all symptoms.

The actual sickness was a post-NC culture problem within the program, and it eventually cost Coach Fulmer his job. Not only do I feel like I've seen enough to be sure that he was the primary cause (just as I feel he is primarily to credit for the 90's program that was the best in the country), but I have no doubt that his mishandling of it from 02-08 was the reason he NEEDED to go at that point. The AD made it worse by giving him that stupid 8-win raise-and-extension contract. That was the exact WRONG thing to do when the program was falling apart due to complacency.

Then I guess I am not a true fan....of silliness that is

I don't know how that DB didn't run over and stomp The Future's ACL during that chicken dance. That kind of crap is why I was glad to see him go, and sad to see him come back a few years later under the code name Da'Rick.

Just because he gave his all means squat.

He's was the reason for the rise, and the reason for the fall.
i like almost everyone was ready for him to go i wanted change to see a new head coach but i will never set and bash him. just wondering why do you blame him?
don't respond to that troll bait. The stupid may be contagious
not true at all!

Great post.

He did call himself the “Future”. Maybe he wasn’t calling himself the future but prophesying on TN’s “Future”.

Kelly Washington's neck created a "situation." The way Fulmer handled it created a problem. It led to a creeping cancer than ended with Fulmer's firing. Hamilton screwed up that firing and put UT into a death spiral that looks to be ending.

always fun to watch a player luck into a school record during a game

blaming him for the decline is nonsense

Maybe you need to go back and watch that game. His longest pass play of the game came on a throw that was bit on by both the safery and CB so after the catch there was no one around. Yeah, he lucked into that alright because after thaf one game he didn't do much rest of the year.

Of course not to mention he talked Stalworth into opting for the draft then decided to stay himself.

I totally agree! I remember that night like it was yesterday. We were headed to the Rose Bowl to play in the national championship. We had just beaten Florida IN THE SWAMP (Spurrier's last game there...btw). That game was postponed because of 9/11. We were all in and ready to stomp the Tigers. When their QB went out the place was all a buzz because we were GUARANTEED the win at that point. Then we lost. It was awful. And an LSU fan almost puked on me on the MARTA getting back to my car.

That was the only time in all my years at Tennessee that I won the away game "lottery." I gave the other ticket to my brother. It was a great experience just for that.

I know...I know...cool story bro. You will have to say...cool story sis, though.

I was at the game as well. We also knocked their starting RB out of the game. Our "all-world" defense against their 2nd sting QB and RB....and we found a way to snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory. Of course, it didn't help that Meachum fumbled a go-ahead TD opportunity late in the game.

No one recovered from that loss....the players, the fans and most of all the coaches. That loss haunted Fulmer probably to this day.

It started when the fans got tired of watching "boring" football. If you remember, winning wasn't an issue, but not having an exciting big play offense was. A few recruiting classes that didn't pan out, and the sudden slump really put the pressure on the ad, and in turn fulmer. Thus, the last resort scenario....listen to outsiders or in this case, the fans. In comes Dave clawsen and the rest is a horrific history. What caused this mess IMO? We got greedy at the worst possible time and it cost us. That and losing cut as oc if you wanna go back a little further.

Didn't we smoke Michigan about 3 weeks later? Agree it sucked! I had all but purchased my plane ticket to LA. I thought it was our high ranking and expectations in 2005 that was more disappointing. It's hard to beat an SEC team twice in a year.
