When I ever posted evenly mildly disparaging comments about our former regime, I was labeled a troll, although I rarely stated anything that wasn't factual.I often wonder why you post on VN. Your always so down about every thread you post in.
It was an abysmal hire - UT should have kept Kippy Brown as HC and embarked on a year-long search for a "home run" hire ala an Urban Meyer or Nick Saban (because, let's be honest, they are the two best college coaches in the country).
The Derek Dooley hire is, nationally, an embarrassment and further proof that the UT football program is light years away from returning to the elite of college football.
So, yes, I have been down lately because of the circumstances surrounding the program. But I also am astounded and frustrated by the mentality of the posters on this board that only view the world through orange-colored glasses. We will have a poor recruiting class, putting us even further behind our rivals Florida and Alabama. Dooley has never proven to be a successful coach, competent possibly, but never successful.
I agree with this part and if we don't have a top 15 to 20 class I'm going from giving this guy a chance to saying get rid of him.
That's not going to be easy considering the timing.I don't think we can blame him this year for the tail spin UT has been thrown into. This was just a horrible time to have a coach quit on us. Only Urban or Saban could salvage this class, and even then it wouldn't be easy.

Despite that fact that my apprehensions have proven to be valid, I haven't been on this board crowing "I told ya so!"
But the utter bungling by Hamilton and the boosters on this coaching search has left me wondering when exactly UT can pull out of this tailspin.

And before the defense of "well, yeah, but he coached at Louisiana Tech - what would you expect?" is thrown out, it can be argued that Utah, Boise State and Louisiana Tech all procure similar levels of recruiting classes. Yet, the other two schools consistently field successful teams. LA Tech was 4-8 last year. It was an abysmal hire - UT should have kept Kippy Brown as HC and embarked on a year-long search for a "home run" hire ala an Urban Meyer or Nick Saban (because, let's be honest, they are the two best college coaches in the country).
Would you mind sharing some of the "national" news articles and/or comments that mention Dooley is an embarrassment for TN? I have seen far more comments and articles regarding USC not making a good hire with Kiffin than I have about Dooley. You are also premature with your comments regarding recruiting. How about giving the guy a break and at least wait and see what happens before you claim "light years" of failure.
It's really amusing to see so many of you that think you could be the AD here and make a big splash hire. Get over yourselves and just get with the program, it's not like your opinions are going to change anything in the end. I agree that it may not have been the best hire, but it is what is. I want to back him and see what he does first before I start bashing him. Keep in mind he was probably the only coach really willing to come in and take over this mess. I at least commend him for taking on that challenge.

This is the pervasive mentality on this board that is the most maddening and easily the most ignorant.
Voicing dissent is necessary. "just get with the program"? Why, if the program is wrong? I am, and will always be, 100% Vol. Like a father, I will wholly love them, even when they royally f- up. And this situation is a Royal F- Up. Hamilton should be tossed out this week. Jimmy Sexton whipped Hamilton with the way Kiffin's contract was constructed. Of course he split when USC opened up! It cost him nothing. And to have no contingency plan in effect in case an event like this arose reeks of unpreparedness and a bit of hubris.
In the South, the UT job is a top 10 job. Outside the South, UT has become almost irrelevant, an also-ran, equivalent to a Wisconsin, a Boston College, an Arizona State.
Look at our schedule next year. Were you to ask fans from around the nation to rank the UT program in 2010 against our opponents, where would we fall? In the past 5-7 years (coincidentally the most important years in the program to players we are currently recruiting - our potential future stars), UT would certainly be ranked behind:
1) Florida
2) Alabama
3) Oregon
4) LSU
5) Ole Miss
6) Georgia [yes, head-to-head we've been great, but Georgia has been more successful overall - that is noticed on a national scale]
7) UT ??
8) South Carolina
9-12) the rest
The problem isn't Dooley. I'm sure he is a fine person. But he is green and an unproven commodity and our 6th choice and not someone I will blindly support just because Hamilton and the boosters threw a bunch of money at him. This isn't the military; you are not required to genuflect just because you are told.
If Dooley goes out and grabs some talented recruits and proves himself to be a capable game manager, I'll jump on board. Until then, I'll call this entire situation what it is.
A Royal F- Up.

Its all right in front of you .....
He went to a faltering LA Tech three years ago and reportedly helped them engineer a massive turn around . NOT . They won 1 more game in his 3 years than they did in the previous 3 .
He recruited under Saban at LSU . He had success because A ) kids wanted to come play for Saban B) They wanted to come to LSU. I once was in sales for a company that grossed 1 billion dollars. I contributed. When I left that company still earned 1 Billion dollars. Could I earn 1 billions on my own ? No
Saban never promoted this guy !! He passed over him . He was a career position coach . He is gonna bring in a bunch of ya-hoos from La Tech . He will keep Chaney and lance if they choose to stay ...I would hope .
He has already said he is going to heavily recruit EAST TENNESSEE ?!?!?!?!? what ?
Keep your I on this recruiting class ...it will continue to falter . Then will be filled with some second tier talent. Next season we will be lucky to win 5 games . 6 best case ..4 worst .
I agree with the previous poster ...keep Kippy as HC. Take your time and find a PROVEN candidate to lead us to the promised land.
