Who would benefit more? The HS coach or the College Coach who may or may not have had some doing of the rent being paid?

I would think the College Coach benefits more, and its not even close.

It's still a crapshoot for the college coach because that little money just isn't going to change anything vis a vis college choice.
 
I think there is more than W-L at stake for a HS coach with a 5 star recruit. He can win titles, leverage the kid, get an assistant gig at a school, notoriety, AAU circuit availability.

I don't think a coach could necessarily afford it, but could find someone easily who could.

This. The W-L factor is the smallest of the intangibles that are available to the coach.

The HS coach has more concrete benefits by taking the player. The college coach is still not guaranteed anything by doing so, IMO. I see your angle though.
