Kentucky/Bledsoe investigation

I don't see why a high school coach paying a player's rent affects you guys unless the money originated with you. Regardless of why the kid is retroactively ineligible, if that's what it comes to, it seems like any penalty for UK would be the same.

I think its quite obvious the money didn't originate with us. I haven't worked out the whole timeline, but I'm quite certain that when the rent was paid, it was under the Gillispie tenure.... though I'm not certain of that.

The only reason I'm more concerned with that, is because its more likely to be proven than the issue with the grades, IMO. If they can trace a signature, credit card, or signed check that paid for that rent by the coach, then its a done deal.

The landlord already stated the coach paid her in cash.

Even if the coach paid the rent, it's no big deal. The 'AA will opine that Bledsoe should have to reimburse the coach. Bledsoe, out of loyalty to Cal for his constanty talking him up to NBA personnel guys the last two months, will do so. The Keystone Cops will say that resolves the issue of his eligibility and move on to other inane idiocy. End of story.

It's no big deal to break the rules?

"Under N.C.A.A. rules, it is not permissible for a high school student’s family to receive rent money from a public school coach. It would be considered an impermissible benefit."

This is the normal behavior of the 'AA, though I'm not certain they look away on this one. However, I tend to think the worst is over, and the reason this was released in the first place is becaues the NYT spent 8 months researching it and had to make some sort of play to try and hang Calipari. All while there are plenty of stories to investigate in their back yard, where UConn has piled up a nice list.

While I do think this latest story is grasping at straws, Cal brought this all upon himself.

If the 'AA wants to hound people for accepting money that keeps them housed, let them have it. It would be a fool's errand befitting the history of ineptitude and incompetence that confederacy of imbeciles has written.

Couldn't happen to a better person than Jim Calhoun.

This investigation has nothing to do with cheating or grades or whatever. This is about the money. The NCAA operates like a pimp. If one of their hoes is out making any type of money on the side then they have to show how strong their pimp hand is.

UK just didn't pay their taxes.

Reminds me of my favorite pimp movie of all time....&itch better have my money, I don't care if it ain't sunny!

Is there a sliding scale grade for this acceptable housing allowance? A few months rent where you live is a little different than a move 3 pay grades up in housing.

Depends on where the money is coming from. If somebody at a university is funneling money to a recruit, that's obviously off limits. However, if a high school coach wants to spend money out of his own pocket, I can't see why that is any of the 'AA's business.

They make everything about them. They want to be big time and control everything.

Come on. You can't see why this would be any different than funneling money to a recruit? Every USC and Ala., UK and other high profile programs would simply find a way to buy "advice" from a high school coach, or he would become the conduit for the cash. Pretty simple really. Don't be naive.

We shall see. We need to keep this post for reference, just in case you might have to eat some crow down the line.

Sounds nice assuming a WWW type isn't adding to this benevolent HS coaches income through backdoor deals tied to the University.

Write it down, take a picture, I don't give a damn. I don't run from things I have said like the John Kerry types on this board.

Bingo.
The HS coach really doesn't benefit much by paying for rent out of his own pocket.
The money was likely funneled through the HS coach by someone else. Someone who would benefit by Bledsoe's mysterious inflated grades and sudden eligibility.

you really don't think the coach benefits more than anyone other than the player?

The coach may benefit as far as his W-L record goes, but is it really worth forking out thousands of dollars to pay a student's rent? I wouldn't think so. HS coaches in general are not the best paid professions out there.

A college coach would benefit however by landing a NBA type recruit. However, if that recruit does not qualify academically, then it would serve no purpose recruiting him. A "shady" or "questionable" coach could possible find an avenue to get the recruit to move to a location where his grades could mysteriously and drastically improve, thus qualifying. If that said recruit could not afford the move, its certainly plausible that "arrangments" could be made by the College Coach or his posse, who both benefit more than anyone else by the NBA caliber recruit.

Damn straight he does. If a 5 star top 25 prospect drops in you're lap due to a forced transfer after his school shut down, and it only costed you 1,200 bucks... he is going to take that deal all day long.

I think there is more than W-L at stake for a HS coach with a 5 star recruit. He can win titles, leverage the kid, get an assistant gig at a school, notoriety, AAU circuit availability.

I don't think a coach could necessarily afford it, but could find someone easily who could.

Who would benefit more? The HS coach or the College Coach who may or may not have had some doing of the rent being paid?

I would think the College Coach benefits more, and its not even close.

I don't know if I would go that far; however, I agree with you that a college coach does have an incentive to funnel money. But, like BPV says, the high school coach has lots of incentives as well.
