Kentucky coaching situation

As big as a program as Kentucky is, they are getting shot down from coaches at inferior programs such as Alabama, Baylor, etc

I hope this is a great example to Vols fans who want sooo badly to fire the best coach we hv ever had here in Tennessee history, Rick Barnes

It's an easy solution to fire a winning coach, its hard to find a legitimate replacement.

If I'm Kentucky, this is who I think you got to pursue right now:

1. Bruce Pearl
2. Mark Few
3. Lamont Paris
4. Will Wade
5. Rick Patino

If you whiff on all those guys, good luck

Might as well beg Calipari to come back
Definitely need to keep Barnes unless shtf

Pope isn’t a bad coach, he runs a very good, modern offense. But holy hell, Cal just left less than 72 hours ago. I understand the urgency because of the portal, but this seems a bit rushed.
He's not a Ky level coach. He's never won a conference title. Not at BYU or Utah Valley. He's a .634 career record thus far winning between 18-25 games a season.

He's going to get better players and win games at KY but if he lasts 5 years he will have to win 30 games a time or two and I don't see that happening.

He's a Pitino player and isn't a bad hire. He has as good a shot at success as most anyone that they could realistically hire. They chased a national championship coach who had four final fours there, out on a rail after a 23 or 24 win season. They were never going to hire a national champion or NBA coach.

Roy Williams is the ultimate rarity in college basketball hires. You only hire final four coaches like we got Barnes and Cal landed at Arkansas. They are just at the end of the road at their current job and need a reset.

Well duke and unc hired coaches that had no head coaching experience at all worked out ok
For them
Experiences assistants ready to take over the reigns. Likely what we will do when Barnes retires.

Kentucky just hired their version of Kellie Harper. Great guy. Alum. Won a national title with them as a player. Average coach.

I wondered if he might become a candidate as they get told "no" from their fairy tale list.

Before moving to the Big12, his teams got progressively worse each year in the WCC. But they did have a good season moving to the Big 12. this year.

I have a feeling Pope wouldn't exactly be the HR hire Ky fans were expecting.
I don’t think UK fans would be too excited about Pope. He has never even made it beyond the first round of the tournament.

This is the response every time someone turns down a job. As if, because Nick Saban did a thing back in 2006, everyone else is doing it.

Who else has publicly turned down a job and then taken it? Has anyone done so in the 17 years since Saban did?

It was a one off, unique to Nick Saban.
Exactly. Plus Saban received so much criticism for doing that, even up till the present time, that I don’t think another coach is going to want to repeat it.

Both of whom were groomed and handpicked by the previous hall of fame coach. This gave each of those guys a perceived annointing and allowed them to continue the legacy that they were handed. This is a much different situation. The previous coach parted ways, went to another school in the conference to coach with a pay decrease, and Kentucky's top two options rejected them.

BBN is in meltdown. Check out A Sea of Blue or Ruoo’s Rafters. There are some supporters, but a lot of naysayers. Aren’t talking about burning couches but the Schiano situation was mentioned. Doubt they would go that far, but they definitely are not happy campers.

Matt Jones stated that Pearl wasn't even contacted.
Not surprising, Barnhart tries to avoid coaches with NCAA issues in their past. He never wanted anything to do with Calipari and never considered him in 2007. However, he was essentially forced to hire him in 2009 following the disastrous tenure of Billy Gillespie.
