Kesling & Me 2013

I like Kesling he sounds pretty professional (a lot better than the rest of the SEC) and I like his excitement on plays...

Sorry but hearing Ward's replays drive me crazy I don't think I would've like him. Even my dad couldn't stand him. I do have a lot of respect for him tho.

This is an example of "don't be that guy." I honestly have never heard this from a UT person before, ever. Guess the apple didn't fall far from the tree.

Forget about Kesling. I was hiking on the AT and listening to him call a game before all of the ap advancements on smartphones and the guy never calls the score and never tells you the yard line. Had a friend at wind creek riding that wanted a game update and he kept saying my play by play blew Bob's away and I my friends am no commentator. Bob should stick to basketball and learn how to paint a visual picture of the game for the audience, that is where Ward excelled.

People used to complain about the exact same thing with Ward. He also had a tendency to be behind the action if you we're watching live.

Ward's phrases always had him late. He misnamed more players than I can count. He brought his blend of excitement and for most Vols fans, and it's the only thing they knew and that's why Kesling just doesn't cut it for them. When compared to all the other team broadcasters, even ones in professional leagues he's upper echelon quality. People just don't even try to give him a chance.

This makes no sense and is likely some sick attempt at a sick joke. John Ward is a hall of fame broadcaster. As GREAT as he was calling football games, he was even better with basketball games. I have never, never heard anyone say anything remotely like this. I live in Nashville and even Vandie fans tell me to this day that they miss listening to Ward. He was captivating! Many fans of even arch rival teams express their love for Ward. He was an artist and true artist. He RARELY made mistakes but when he did he would correct himself immediately every time. He truly painted the picture of being at or in a game. He also possessed a comedic value he didn't realize he had.

Kesling is in the bottom group in the SEC. Jim Hawthorne(spelling) @ LSU is the best around imo. I love listening to 870 am (New Orleans) at night after our day games. It was cool to see Hawthorne honored before last year's Orange and White game.

Kesling fumbles and stumbles and chews his own words continuously. Hardly gives the down and distance. Seldom does the listener know how much time is left in the game. Rarely will tell the listener where the ball is. The listener often has to go online on his phone to get score because Kesling never tells what the score is. I've listened to many games bball/football games where Kesling has routinely confused our opponents. Calling Alabama auburn and auburn Alabama as an example many times through the broadcast. He doesn't even know that he does it. I've never heard Kesling correct himself so I'm lead to believe he is unaware of these things. We were spoiled to have such a perfectionist in Ward. A man who took his profession very seriously almost to a psychotic level. Ward studied his line of work as Peyton Manning does his. It's true. You could tell that Ward was his own biggest critic and that's what made him the best. Ward was often praised as the best by the other greats.

So this OP was not just an opinion, it truly was blasphemous.

your memory is fuzzy at best. I loved Ward, but he made mistakes by the dozens that never got corrected.

Everyone makes mistakes and Ward made some more when he got older but is considered by many as one of the best ever in the SEC.

I may be extremely easy on the guy due to growing up listening to him and meeting him frequently. Great guy in person.

I did get to meet him in a suite one time and he is a truly great guy and was a great play by play announcer. His work definitely played a part in me getting my degree in broadcasting and journalism without a doubt. I'm a huge fan. But to act like he was perfect is forgetting the bad and only remembering the good.

Also, I listen to Kesling online all the time since I'm stuck in ACC country. He gives out scores, yard lines, down and to gos as consistently as anyone, Ward included. People just want to hate on Kesling because he's not John Ward. Kind of like Casey Clausen not being Peyton Manning.

Please. Bob is good at basketball, absolutely blows at football. He was just plain lucky he was good at Channel 10 as the sports guy and got the gig. He is far too bland for my taste, butchers names, gets numbers/players confused, calls yard lines incorrect, doesn't give down and distance and score enough. I tried to give him a chance and he blew it.

What are you, family member?

I don't recall him making mistakes on some of the biggest plays in history. Ie, Ward messes up Manning's sneak against UGA, messes up the missed kick by ND in 1992, and was completely boring as Hell when Stoerner fumbled. Three huge, memorable plays that were called terribly.

People like you are the type that'll hate Holly Warlick just because she followed Pat. Kesling isn't bad.

it's always awkward to see the Vols jumping up and down cheering in South Bend after the ND blown FG yet Ward is screaming "the kick is good, the kick is good". Then he's like "no, it's no good, the kick is no good!"

Not truly. It was an attempt to point to the current degenerate state some of these threads have gotten to as of late. Too much bickering and snide commentary. Yes it's a football forum where football is discussed, but can't we simply be civil in our comments?

I believe Kesling is just as good as John Ward was.

On a side note, I dislike Mickey Dearstone's morning radio show, but he does an outstanding job calling Lady Vols games.

I like Mickey and John Wilkerson because they can get away with saying things most announcers can't. Like critiqueing refs/umpires.

All the great play by play guys on the radio were a few seconds behind. Done on purpose so they could paint a complete picture of the game and build drama.

Radio play by play is/was an art form. Completely different than a TV PBP and analyst.

John Ward's true gift was his ability to help listeners visualize the action. He did provide excitement and he did keep the major facts of the game (score, possession, yardline, time) updated constantly, but those characteristics were not what made Ward great. It was his ability to describe a play as it unfolded unlike any other. He did go downhill in his last few years and made his share of mistakes (none bigger than the missed FG at the end of the ND game. One guy told me he switched it off the moment John said "The kick is... good.") Still, he's the best I've ever heard on radio.

How much fun is that?.....on Kesling...he's fine and will grow into the role...John Ward was a lifetime fixture....you don't achieve his greatness without childhood memories of his broadcasts...Kesling hasn't had that luxury of time yet...jmo

What's funny is that Wilhoit call is exactly what I'm talking about.

It was excited, you could hear and understand what he was saying because he annunciated everything, he described it. It was an excellent call. You knew how long the kick was, everything.

I'll bring the torches if someone else can get the pitchforks. This is just another example of what's wrong with the youth of America!!

Ward was a master of painting the picture and putting you in the stadium. Also, he was a fan w/o sounding like a homer. Bill Anderson was the perfect color man for Ward. JW carried the broadcast and Anderson added insight when prompted. "There again, John...." A great team and true Volunteers.

Kesling is not as bad as many say. His background is television and it shows. He is professional in describing the game but not as colorful as Ward. Tim Priest is a former player and a great fan. You can hear the joy and the frustration in his voice. I like that he cares so much.
