People used to complain about the exact same thing with Ward. He also had a tendency to be behind the action if you we're watching live.
I'm not buying that. That may have happened in the early days, but by the 80s they were selling every commercial break they could. That is because JW knew his audience. . . a radio audience. He had to fill in the times for advertisements with the action that had occurred during the commercial break. There were no commercial timeouts during the game for radio. He painted a picture that Bob seemingly refuses to do. He knew the audience could not see the action, until later years, but he was the Vol Network, a Radio network.:
This is the first year since 1984, I didn't attend every game. I'm literally building my dream home. So I will be listening in only via radio & Kesling play by pay all year. Reminds me of my pre teens when John Ward describes the game play by play, turn by turn, twist by twist, yard by yard. Anyone else going all Kesling?
Ward was good but had his mistakes just like Kesling does.
I like Kesling just as much if not more than Ward.
Ward's 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1.. call was so annoying.

Is your dream home so far out in the wilderness that you can't see any games on tv?
I like Kesling he sounds pretty professional (a lot better than the rest of the SEC) and I like his excitement on plays...
Sorry but hearing Ward's replays drive me crazy I don't think I would've like him. Even my dad couldn't stand him. I do have a lot of respect for him tho.
I am a relatively young guy and had the pleasure of hearing Ward's last years, and he was absolutely no match. He could paint the scene like no other, and he was also professional. Ward was much more professional than Munson and probably even Jack Crystal. I never remember Ward saying "we" and "us."
