There is no comparison between John Ward and Kesling. Ward could make you feel like you were there. Some of the younger guys on here don't know what they missed!
Know what you mean, Husky. I never heard Lindsey Nelson calling Vols games, but heard him on Notre Dame's Sunday replay. Didn't believe them when they told me he was voice of the Vols before Ward.
Ward did more to build the Vol network than anyone. When he made the calls, you felt the emotion. You could visualize the play through both his words and the intensity of his voice. Many of a Saturday afternoon, family and friends would be in my family's den, with the sound turned down on the old Zenith, and my stereo speakers pulled into the den to hear Ward make the calls. It was funny to hear Ward still counting down the yards to a touchdown as the player was tossing the ball to the referee. However, there was no denying how electric his play by play calls were.
Since Ward retired, some people have come to accept Kesling, but he is and always will be standing in the shadow of John Ward. I seriously hoped when Ward first told us, "It's time." that they would do a nation wide search for his replacement. However, when I saw a shot of Kesling sitting just above Ward and Anderson in the booth during a road game, I knew it was a done deal.
To call Kesling's replacement of Ward a downgrade is the understatement of the 20th century. I remember Kesling as a local sportscaster, and when he was on Jefferson Pilot. I think they should name a sleeping pill in his honor. To this day, though I hoped Boring Bob would exceed my lowest of expectations, I do not and cannot stand to listen to the game on radio for more than five minutes at a time.
If anyone were to start a petition to bring back John Ward, I would sign it just like John Hancock signing the Declaration of Independence. Older fans would line up to carry him to the press box if his old legs couldn't make the climb. There is one, and ONLY ONE, voice of the Vols. To hear Bob Kesling carrying that moniker, is, and always will be to me, insulting.
