He wasn't doing the game for TV. He was doing the game on radio and he while he was counting down the yards (yes, many times after the runner crossed the goal line), he was scanning the field for penalty flags before he told his listeners about the TD.

There's no need to be a jerk about it.

I'm not just talking about scoring plays. He was slow other times and it wasn't because of a delay. Look, he was a good play by play man. I just never thought he was as great as others did and found him to be a little awkward. It's just a matter of personal taste.

John Ward on the radio left me at the end of regulation fully informed...
I never scanned the newspaper the next day with anything missing...there was trust and comfort that I've never experienced with any other broadcast teams...if he was a second or two behind live action, I either didn't know or care...in fact part of the fun of watching it on tv was a millisecond after a touchdown on the tube, reexperiencing it with John and Bill...great childhood experiences

There is no comparison between John Ward and Kesling. Ward could make you feel like you were there. Some of the younger guys on here don't know what they missed!

Know what you mean, Husky. I never heard Lindsey Nelson calling Vols games, but heard him on Notre Dame's Sunday replay. Didn't believe them when they told me he was voice of the Vols before Ward.

Ward did more to build the Vol network than anyone. When he made the calls, you felt the emotion. You could visualize the play through both his words and the intensity of his voice. Many of a Saturday afternoon, family and friends would be in my family's den, with the sound turned down on the old Zenith, and my stereo speakers pulled into the den to hear Ward make the calls. It was funny to hear Ward still counting down the yards to a touchdown as the player was tossing the ball to the referee. However, there was no denying how electric his play by play calls were.

Since Ward retired, some people have come to accept Kesling, but he is and always will be standing in the shadow of John Ward. I seriously hoped when Ward first told us, "It's time." that they would do a nation wide search for his replacement. However, when I saw a shot of Kesling sitting just above Ward and Anderson in the booth during a road game, I knew it was a done deal.

To call Kesling's replacement of Ward a downgrade is the understatement of the 20th century. I remember Kesling as a local sportscaster, and when he was on Jefferson Pilot. I think they should name a sleeping pill in his honor. To this day, though I hoped Boring Bob would exceed my lowest of expectations, I do not and cannot stand to listen to the game on radio for more than five minutes at a time.

If anyone were to start a petition to bring back John Ward, I would sign it just like John Hancock signing the Declaration of Independence. Older fans would line up to carry him to the press box if his old legs couldn't make the climb. There is one, and ONLY ONE, voice of the Vols. To hear Bob Kesling carrying that moniker, is, and always will be to me, insulting.

This is the first year since 1984, I didn't attend every game. I'm literally building my dream home. So I will be listening in only via radio & Kesling play by pay all year. Reminds me of my pre teens when John Ward describes the game play by play, turn by turn, twist by twist, yard by yard. Anyone else going all Kesling?

Congrats on your dream house. Sorry you have to put up with Cheggerburd Bob all season.

Personally I would just take a few hour break to watch the game but ya gotta do what cha gotta do.

After following all the link you so kindly provided, I must say if you call this excitement, you must love root canals.

In order to stimulate the local economy, I should start a vacuum cleaner company. In honor of Bob Kesling, the most powerful model would be called the K series.

It's kind of annoying that he always says checkerboards (plural). It's one big checkerboard. The only place you see multiple checkerboards is at a retirement center.

You do realize there is a radio delay anyway? Plus the fact that great radio play by play guys back in the day were PURPOSEFULLY behind the play to better paint a picture.

If you think your radio perfectly syncs up with your TV, then you are woefully mistaken.

I was talking about the dragging out 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, TOUCHDOWN. That always aggravated me.
Everyone knows there is a little delay. Add all that to the radio natural delay and you have a 30 second delay.

Kesling is all we have, but he still sucks...he's terrible.
Comparing John Ward and Bob Kesling is like comparing Neyland to Dooley, enough said!

Reading must not be a strong point for you. My earlier post listed that as one of the 3 facts.

I don't dissect it like you experts. I just remember moving here in '95, hearing lots of people talk about the great John Ward, then listening to him and not being all that impressed. I never did get what made people rave about him. Kessling's OK. Not great, not horrible.

Yeah, you missed out on a lot of his radio calls of the game if you just moved here in '95. You heard him for 3 or 4 more years & never got the whole picture of what that man could do for football season. When Ward said "It's Football Time in Tennessee" you knew from that moment on in September till November it was time for slobber knocking & in your face freaking football season & we gonna whip dey ass was on!!

:yes: Yeah, I think somehow that became a universal thing for us TN Vol football fans. I know in the very early 1980's ('81 & '82) when they would be on TV more is when I started doing that on a regular basis.

um no, I was agreeing with you. Just pointing out that so many others are just blaming the natural delay of the radio for it. There were numerous times according to Ward a player was at the 15, but with the background noise you already knew he was in the endzone. Maybe you should lighten up Francis.

But again, John Ward was great, not just a state treasure, but a sports announcing treasure for all. But just like any other announcers he made his share of mistakes too. Kessling's no different, he's just following a legend and will never be able to live up to those shoes.

Ward was good but had his mistakes just like Kesling does.
I like Kesling just as much if not more than Ward.
Ward's 5.. 4.. 3.. 2.. 1.. call was so annoying.
