Kicker Head Issues

The last two games he’s been off but he hit a clutch fg against bama. Also the two he missed against bama were 50 plus. And you skimmed over how he hadn’t missed a fg until bama. Hes a freshman kicker, y’all get caught up in thinking the back up is gonna be 10 x better then the starter.. the fact is ill trust the coaches to put the best players on the field instead of ppl bitching about freshman having bad games.
He missed a FG vs NC State. Kickers have a job, to make kicks. Everyone is going to miss some. Missing 5 of 6 gets you cut in the NFL.

Many of us know “Krazy Kickers” are the “Norm”…AND they can be as skittish as a squirrel…who’s gonna get Gilbert’s head “right” before next week? Heupel? Coach Ek? Sigmund Freud? Electro Shock Theropy?

Steve Spurrier knew how to fix it........ride the pine......next man go in and he got results. He didn't care if you were the leading Heisman candidate you came out if you were playing for the other team. You can't tell me there's not four or five kickers over there on that sideline that can't do better. Saw an Alabama podcast and they went on and on warning us that our kicker was going to beat us and to put someone else in.

Am I wrong but I thought we had recruited a soccer player kicker that was very good.

Look, one should never hold a missed 50+ yarder against a kicker. That's just a low-percentage kick. If they make it, awesome. If they don't, that's okay.

In that context, yesterday is the ONLY game in which the kid under-performed. It happens. Just needs to get his head right, turn the page, and go from there.

Go Vols!

He is a freshman, however he has developed a tendency to hook his kicks from the right side of the field and push the ball from the left side of the field. This is a sign of a mechanical error in his set up and follow through. We need a kicker who can make kicks from at least 50 yards.
It’s all between the ears. I promise you the back up is not better or coach would have him out there. The back up isn’t always better smh

Kickers are an enigma as a whole. But man what they do is not easy and it’s the most specialized thing out there I guess along with long snapping. They basically stand around the whole game, trying to stay warmed up and then go in for one minute sometimes under the most high pressure situation you can imagine.

I'm saying there is four or five former kickers, at some point in high school, on that sideline that could go out there and do just as well as what we are seeing.

I’m not just gonna give up on a kid bc he’s missed some fgs. It’s all between his ears, and confidence. You guys can all you want tho.
I'm not saying give up on him .... but you play the odds. If you don't have a reliable kicker, you need to adjust for that. Heupel should have gone for it on that 3rd miss, which was the first drive of the 2nd half.

So should they run that new commit out there? I love the player X had a bad game, kick him off the team and replace him with player Y mentality of some on here. It must get tiring constantly searching for someone to complain about when others perform. Life is way too short to live it the way you guys do.

Ekeler and Heupel need a consistent field goal specialist who can make 40 plus yard field goals.

If that means moving Gilbert to kick off and Turbyville to field goal specialist to help this team then you make that move.

On 2nd thought .... You're right. That shanked 34 yard field goal attempt was a stroke of brilliance. What was I thinking?

I’ve seen nfl kickers do the same thing and go through droughts, what I’m saying is it’s entirely way to early to tell with this guy. If you had any sense you’d get that..

34 kickers in NCAA football are perfect from 50+. Only 20 have missed all their 50+ attempts. Vandy's kicker is 5/6 from 50+. Kentucky's kicker Raynor hasn't missed a FG this season, with multiple 50-yarders made. Bond from A&M is perfect on multiple 50 yard attempts. Arkansas has two kickers and both have made all their 50+ yard attempts. Oklahoma is perfect from 50+. Gilbert is one of 4 SEC kickers who haven't made a 50 yard fg this year (the others have 1 or 0 attempts) and Gilbert has the shortest long FG of any kicker in the SEC this season. It's a major weakness and making 50+ isn't as huge a barrier as people make it out to be. NFL kickers are making 65+ yarders these days.

Why can’t UT get elites kickers anymore? Used to have both kickers and punters every year
well you had several decades of one family producing the punters. We’ve had a few very good punters since then as well. Ross is actually very highly regarded. Kicker isn’t just physical; you can have an elite physical talent in high school then the mental part becomes more in college in tight games in rowdy environments.
