I don't feel bad for the kid at all.
Butch calls kid: "Hey, Sterling, when are you looking to make a decision?"
Sterling: "October, coach."
Butch tells staff: "Alright, so Johnson is on the board, he's planning on committing in October. We obviously have other players higher on our board, and we need to evaluate him, so we need to stay in contact with him and keep him close, and we need to make sure we know what our options are, and in October, if he's still an option, and we've done our evaluation, and we've seen what players before him will do, we want to take him."
(Coaches agree and put Johnson on board to commit in October, thinking that they have 5 months to evaluate him and others to take the best fit in order to win ballgames)
Sterling Johnson: "Hey coach! I've changed my mind! I don't want to commit in October, I want to commit now!"
Butch looks at the board, sees several players who have been better rated, evaluated, and seen in person at the position, and sees that Johnson is further down...
Butch: "Well, I appreciate your desire to be a Vol, but we had been planning on you committing in October. We aren't prepared to take your commitment right now, because we're not sure that would be best for you or us right now. But we definitely aren't saying no, just not right now. Come to camp, let us see you here in person, keep in touch, and then in October, if all is good, we'll be glad to take your commitment."
Sterling: "Or...I'll just call Clemson."
That's how it happened, most likely. The guy gave the staff a date, they made a plan, he changed his plan, but he isn't good enough for them to change theirs.
Don't sweat it. It's what programs who truly have a goal and a model and a structure do.
