Kiffin to LSU

As a college football head coach, his team has lost at least 5 games in 5 of his 9 full seasons. This forum makes it seem as though Kiffin is a highly sought after head coach, which isn't grounded in reality. He went from being fired at USC to serving as the offensive coordinator at Alabama, to Florida Atlantic and then to Ole Miss. Florida Atlantic and Ole Miss? His head coaching skills do not appear to be as coveted as VN wants to believe.

So his actual status does not match your believed perceived status. Got it. So solid.

What is his actual status? I do not believe that he will be offered any of those jobs at LSU, Miami or Florida (should it come open), but I will admit if I'm proven wrong later. I stand by my opinion that Kiffin's credentials as a college head coach are unimpressive. Got it?

hopefully our coach is unimpressive enough to get us to top 10.

Can't say that I disagree with you.

Miami CAN pay as much as they want. How much they are willing to pay may be another question entirely.

Personally, I think the Canes are in a far worse position than the Vols we're in circa late January. They had Richt, who was in no way a world beater, but he had them at least respectable. First decent coach (and an alumni to boot) they have on the sidelines in 15 years and they run him off for Manny Diaz. You really can't make that up.

Point being, based on what I have seen the pressure is on the Miami brass for a homerun hire.
Miami couldn't pay whatever they want (behind the flashy exterior UM is a small private school with a relatively small fanbase) and even if they could, they wouldn't. There is a very large amount of conflict and distrust between the athletic and academic sides of the house there, and it's been that way ever since their heyday. The academic side of the house does not like that Miami is widely known for their football program (not saying I agree with that stance, but that's what they think).

UM is a really interesting institution. It's very very good academically - probably doesn't rate as high as a school like Vandy or Duke but it's in the same ballpark. On the sports side, they have a historically very successful football program that pushes the envelope and has a motley crew fanbase. It's kind of like Stanford, Vandy, or Duke having a flashy, rough-and-tumble football program with a jagged edge fanbase that in all likelihood has never even stepped foot on campus. The different cultures and priorities at the same institution is absolutely hilarious.

Once again, can't say that I disagree with you re:fanbase and academic concerns.

I do however disagree that Miami is cash constrained. I have no clue what Diaz is making. As far as I know,Miami isn't even required to disclose that info. I'm guessing somewhere in the 3-4 million $ range a year or so.

Point being, they could easily step that up to the $7 million dollar range or more should the need arise. They have the alumni and fans and they are starved for a return to glory. In many ways, Miami is even more starved for a winner than the Vols are.

UM would only step into that range to retain a coach that was winning at a championship level, because they could probably reasonably afford it at that point.

As you said I or anybody else doesn't know exactly what their finances are, but I highly doubt they are cash flush. It's a relatively small private school (not much bigger than Vandy, and with a fraction of the endowment) with a relatively small, bandwagon fanbase that only comes close to selling out that stadium when they are a national title-level program. They only have any real fan support when they are winning titles and it becomes the hot event in town. Outside of that, their fan support is kind of lacking. It isn't like Tennessee or virtually any other SEC school except Vandy.

Their biggest problem over the years is the conflict between the athletic and academic sides of the university. It is unbelievable what their football team has been able to achieve over the years given they've never been on the same page as an institution about athletics.

Miami's has money because of the U of Miami Health System. Reported 400 million profit over the last few years. Lane Kiffin could pick and choose recruits in Palm Beach Broward and Miami Dade counties. Funny how kids in South Florida would prefer to stay close to home if Miami was winning and had a "Swag Coach". Lane fits that requirement for sure! Also he knows the landscape because of his time at FAU. I could see him coming to South Florida. Just giving my opinion I could care less honestly after his night ride out of Knoxville.

But UM does not, or at least there are a bunch of people there do not want to, spend that money on athletics.

Hell, no. He'd be nuts to even consider the canes. For LSU, yeah, that I can see. I'd stay right where I was at Ole Miss rather than leave for Miami.
Agreed. He can likely parlay this off-season into a raise if he has legitimate offers. Take the raise and the money and stay at Ole Miss. Win around 8 games a year and the fan base will be happy. Win more than 8 games in a year and get another raise. Rinse and repeat.

He’s still young. He should build a legacy of sorts at Ole Miss, and take a big time job later in his career if he wants it.

Stoops would be dumb to make that move. They are about to build statues of him in KY for a “winning” season, when LSU is firing a guy 2 years from a Natty. Completely different expectations.
