Kiffin trying to poach Titans running back coach | ProFootballTalk.com

Why Kiffin would ever dream Pola might take the enormous step down from NFL position coach to position coach at a college that is ineligible for the next two NCAA postseasons is beyond us, though Kiffin did spend two years working for an NFL owner who's seemingly lost his own sense of reality. So perhaps we shouldn't be all that surprised.

Fisher's been trying to lure Pola away from JDR and the Jags for some time. Glad he's staying put with the Titans, as he's an upgrade over Byner.

I'm always a proponent of making the call anyways. Even if the hire is a shot in the dark, you still have to make an attempt or you're not doing your job to the best of your ability. This was the case here. No way is Pola moving to USC from the NFL while they're under NCAA sanction, especially when he has the chance to put the best RB in the NFL on his coaching resume. Kiffin had to make the call though, because Pola would be an amazing hire for him.

Try again in two years Kiff. :neener2:

Kiffin thinks USC is the greatest thing since sliced bread. He thinks anyone and everyone would kill to play there or coach there. He needs to get over himself and this ridiculous perception.

And many around here need to get over Kiffin.

Hell of a recruiting pitch that would've been..."come get coached by the guy who coached chris johnson"

The thing is, Pola has yet to even coach CJ. Byner was CJ's RB Coach over the past two seasons. Pola was hired during the offseason, and as many people know, CJ has been holding out this entire time. So not only hasn't Pola coached CJ during active season, he hasn't coached him during OTA's.

But then again, CJ isn't good because of coaching. He's good because of his talent. RB Coach is actually the least important positional coach there is, I feel. It's all instincts and natural ability. Pass-blocking is probably the main thing coaches deal with, or holding onto the football if they're fumble prone (like the Tiki Barber situation where he changed how he held the ball). If anything, CJ made Byner look good. Although, I think Byner was better than Sherman Smith purely because Smith was behind the drafting of Chris Henry...*shudder*

Pola could still pitch that he coached Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor, which is still impressive. He could also come at the angle of "When I was with the Jags, we faced a guy twice a year named Chris Johnson... Some of the same things I saw in him are what I see in you, and I know I can get you to that level," or something along those lines. Now, I think most guys could see right through that, but it's still feeding a guy something he wants to hear that not many other recruiters could pitch.

From what I hear, everybody has nothing but positive things to say about Pola. The players love him and the coaches respect him. He'd probably make a great college coach and would be a good recruiter. But, it's just horrible timing. USC is under probation and he's already in a perfect situation. He'd be crazy to leave a place where he has the best RB and one of the most dominant OL's in the entire league.

Like I said, try again in two years. If Pola really wants to coach for his alma mater, I could see him making the move. Just not now.

Nah, I say he dosent try back in 2 years. The bastard can screw himself, and keep away from all things Titan, and Vol football. Period. The end.

so why is it stupid that he asked him to coach at USC? Atleast he asked. I would have asked him as well. Stupid topic.

The stupid thing is asking him to step down from an NFL job to coach at the college level at a school that's on probation. That's what's stupid.

Agreed. Just saying it's a more likely scenario at that point than it is now. Going after coaches who are alums may be the best way for that USC program to bring in good coaches, because after two years of probation, who knows how attractive a coaching position at USC will be?

You have to make the call anyway. If not, you're not doing your job. Mike Hamilton (allegedly) went after a bunch of guys who were unlikely to take the UT HC job. If he went straight for Dooley or Cutcliffe without going after less likely candidates like Muschamp or Gruden (Really no idea who MH actually went after. Just naming names that were speculated for the sake of my point), then everyone here would've been pissed. You only settle once you've exhausted all other options.

So it doesn't matter if it's seems stupid or pointless. You have to make the call anyway.

No, Pola accepting would have been stupid. Asking isn't. We had guys like Basilio talking seriously about Lovie Smith...glass houses, people.
